Notes for William Clopton and Anne Barnardiston

Anne Barnardiston, spouse of William Clapton, died in 1615 and was the daughter of Thomas Barnardiston (died 1619), whose his last wife Anne outlived him.

The autobiography of son-in-law Simonds D'Ewes reports the marriage of Anne Barnardiston to William Clapton: "I was put thither [Lavenham] to school, where I continued till after my grandfather's decease. And it is very observable, that the first acquaintance I gained of any of the gentry of Suffolk, was at this place; for my fellow scholars there were Sir Thomas Barnardiston's younger son Giles, and Walter Clapton, second son of Thomas Clapton, of Kentwel, Esq., not long before deceased: and it afterwards fell out by God's providence, that both these, by my marriage, became my uncles; for Sir William Clapton, elder brother to the said Walter, married Anne, the first daughter of the said Sir Thomas Barnardiston, by whom he had issue Anne, his sole daughter and heir, my now wife. [1]

1612/13 On Shrove Sunday after 14 February, Anne Clopton, future wife of Simonds D'Ewes, was born "at Clare Priory, Suffolk County; Sir Thomas Barnardiston, her grandfather, then dwelling there." [2] [3]

1615 In February, Dame Anne Clopton died. [4] [5]

William Clopton married, second, Elizabeth Pallavicine and, with her, had sons who died in their infancy. [6]

1618 On 11 march, William Clopton died. [7] [8]

1618 In the summer, Simonds D'Ewes visited Nathaniel Barnardiston at Kediton Hall and while at Clare Priory saw Sir Thomas Barnardiston, knight, grandfather to Nathaniel, in good health. [9]

1619 At Christmas, Simonds D'Ewes visited Nathaniel Barnardiston at Kediton Hall and learned that Thomas Barnardiston had just died and was an assistant at his burial. [10]

Anne Clapton, daughter of William Clopton and Anne Barnardiston, took care of grandmother Anne Barnardiston in her widowhood and old age. [11]

1619-1626 Grandmother Anne Barnardiston lived at Clare Priory and then moved to Albury Lodge in Hertfordshire to live with her youngest daughter, who married John Brograve. [12]

1626 The marriage of Simonds D'Ewes and Anne Clopton was suggested by Walter Clopton, uncle of Anne Clopton. The same match was proposed by Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston of Kediton (son of Thomas Barnardiston and Mary Knightly, who was half brother of Anne Clapton). Nathaniel and Arthur Barnardiston were brothers. [13]

1626 On 24 October, Simonds D'Ewes and Anne Clopton were married. [14]

1627 Giles Barnardiston was the only son of Lady Barnardiston. [15]
