Notes for Thomas Scott and Leah Brown

We are researching Alice Scott, who married Thomas Page. This Thomas Scott had wife Leah and daughter Alice and son Barzillai and other children when he died. While we know of no direct evidence that Thomas Scott's daughter Alice was the same person as Alice Scott who married Thomas Page, documents about other family members suggest that they are the same person:

In 1791, Alice Page and Thomas Page witnessed the marriage of Barzillai Scott, son of Thomas and Leah Scott, to Mary Carr. [1]

In 1784, Alice Page and Thomas Page witnessed the marriage of Leah Scott (grand-daughter through son Abraham) and John Woolman. [2]

In 1850, Elizabeth and Sarah Page, two grand-daughters of Thomas Page and Alice Scott, lived in the house of Barzillai Scott, grandson of this Thomas Scott, in Clermont County in 1850 and Barzilla Scott made a legacy to Elizabeth Page in his 1863 will.

1704 Thomas Scott, son of Henry Scott, was baptized on February 8, (likely not as an infant) at Saint Marys Church (formerly Saint Anns) Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey. [3]

1725 Thomas Scott, son and heir of Henry Scott, deceased, sold land, for 5 shillings, to Henry Scott, his well-beloved brother. Dated March 11. The tract was in the town of Burlington on the north side of Ansiskonk Creek, starting at a white oak marked with the letters M.S. … against the corner of Brightwells now Ogburn's land … to a white oak for a corner marked with the Letters HS (perhaps signifying Henry Scott) … to a spanish oak for a corner marked HS … to Asiskonk creek … containing two hundred acres. [4]

1728 Thomas Scott and Leah Brown were married on May 30, 1728 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. The event was reported several ways: at Christ Church, at Christ Church and Saint Peters, and at the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. [5] [6]

1732 The account of the estate of Robert Gillam of Springfield Twp, Burlington County, recorded a payment to Thomas Scott, executor of [brother?] Abraham Scott. [7] Note that the original executor, Benjamin Kemble, had died in 1729.

1739 Thomas Scott voted in an election in Burlington County, New Jersey. [8]

1745 Thomas Scott, perhaps this one, was a freeholder in the city of Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey. Dated April 15. [9]

1746 The will of Thomas Scott, yeoman, date: August 2, 1746 in the city of Burlington named wife Leah. Children: Abraham, Thomas, Brazilla, Anne, Leah, Mary, and Alice, all under age. Real and personal estate. Executors were wife and brother Henry Scott. Witnessed by Jonathan Scott, John Bigan, George Eyres. Proved September 19, 1746. [10] [11] [12]

1746 Henry Scott declined executorship of the will of Thomas Scott. Dated September 19. Witness: Christopher Finigan. [13]

1784 Leah Scott, daughter of Abraham Scott (son of Thomas Scott and Leah Brown?) of Burlington County, married John Aronson Woolman on February 19, at Burlington Meeting. Witnessed by Thomas Page and Alice Page (perhaps Alice Page was Leah's sister) and Ann Page (relationship unknown but perhaps Leah's sister Anne married a Page), and others. [14]

1791 Barzillai Scott of Northampton Twp, Burlington County, son of Thomas and Leah Scott, married Mary Carr, daughter of Caleb and Sarah Carr of Northampton Twp, Burlington County, on 14th day, 9th month. Witnessed by Alice Page (perhaps Barzillai's sister) and Thomas Page; Joseph Scott, Mary Scott, and Barzillai Scott Jr (perhaps Barzillai's children by an earlier wife); Abraham and Patience Scott (Barzillai's brother); and others. [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21]

Research Notes:

Some researchers report the wife of Thomas Scott as Leah Shreve (no other information, but note that son Abraham Scott may have married Leah Shreve), reported on May 17, 1728 in Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey. [22] [23] [24] We seek further documentation about the wife of Thomas Scott.

Leah Brown, daughter of Abraham Brown and Leah Clayton, married Abraham Scott. [25]

1721 On 3 of month 3 and on 7 of month 4, Thomas Scott and Mary Davis, of Chester, stated their intention of marriage. [26] [27] [28]

1721 The marriage of Thomas Scott and Mary Davis was noted in the records of the Philadelphia Meeting on 5th of 5th month, 1721. [29]
