In the name of God Amen the sixtenth day of December in the yere of our lorde god one thousand six hundred and one, I William Howse of Tighfield in the County of North'ton yoman, being sick in bodie; but sounde in minde and of good and perfect remembraunce; thanks be to god, doe make and ordaine this my last will and Testamente; in mannor and forme following, first I give and bequeath my soule unto almightie god my heavenlie father that made me, hopinge and steadfastly beleiving to be saved by the death and bloud sheeding of his sonne Jesus Christe my onelie Saviour and redemer, Item I give and bequeath all my messuages houses landes tenement and hereditaments in Tighfield aforesaide and Hulcote and Gaston in the saide County of North'ton or aine of them, to Thomas Howse the elder my sonne, for terme of his life; without impeachment of waste, And after his decease, to Thomas Howse the younger, one of the sonnes of the saide Thomas Howse the elder, and the the heires males of his bodie lawfully begotten or to be begotten, And for wante of such heires, to John Howse one other of the sonnes of the saide Thomas Howse thelder and to his heires and assignes for ever, provided allwaies, and nevertheless my will is that Will'm Quabell nowe my servant and Elizabeh his nowe wife shall have and einoy the house wherein they nowe dwell in Tighfield aforesaid with such profits and commodities as they nowe einoy therewithe, for and during their two lives, and the life of the longer liver of them, yelding and paying therefore yerelie six shillings eight pence, at the feastes of Th'annunciacon of our Ladie Saint Marie the virgin, and Saint Michaell th'archangell by equall porcons, And also my will is, that Richard Wyat my grandsonne shall have and einoy to him and his assignes, for the terme of five yeres next after my decease, my house in Tighfield aforesaid called the nowe house, Item I divise and my will is, that my said son Thomas Howse shall have my close in Gayton, which I latelie purchased of Frances Tanfield esquire called farther Flittenhills; for terme of his life, And after his decease the same to remaine to the saide Thomas House the younger sonne of the saide Thomas House my sonne and to the heires of his bodie lawfully begotten or to be begotten, and for want of such issue, to the saide John Howse one other of the sonnes of the saide Thomas Howse my sonne and to his heires and assignes for ever, according to the purporte of our deed of feoffamente thereof by me lately made; bearing date the twelveth daie of this instant month of December and executed to th'uses aforesaid; Item I give and bequeath to the saide Thomas Howse my sonne, one lease and all such estate interest title, terme and termes for yeres claime and demande whatsoever, As I nowe have, may might should or of right ought to have, of in or to all, or any messuages landes tents or hereditam'ts in Rothersthorpe, Kislingbury and Wotten ith the saide County of Northton, or any of them, of or by the devise or graunte of Arther Lowe late maister of the house and hospital of Saint John Baptist in North'ton and his Coobretheren, or by any other waies or meanes whatsoever, nonetheles, with this trust and confidence, and my meaning and will is, that the saide Thomas Howse my sonne, his executors or administrators, shall upon request made to him or them, by Will'm Howse my other sonne, his executors or assignes, after my decease, by a good and sufficient lease in lawe, devise and graunt unto the said Will'm his executors and assignes, all those two messuage or tenments in Rothersthorp aforesaid, and all lands tenements and hereditamts in Rothersthorp Kislingsbury and Wotton aforesaid, or any of them, nowe in the tenure; or occupcon of the said Will'm or his assignes, for all such and the whole terme and termes for yeres, as shalbe to come and remaine, to the said Thomas after my decease, for and under one yerely rent of foure pounds nine shillings and ten pence of lawfull money of England, to be paide at such daies and times, as it is reserved by the saide lease made by the saide Arthur Lowe and Coobretheren Item I give and bequeath to my saide sonne Thomas Howse, the some of forty pounds of lawfull English money, to be equally divided amongst his children. Item I give to the said Thomas House my sonne, all that hovell of timber nowe being in Gaybells yarde Item I give unto my saide sonne William Howse the some of fortie pounds of lawfull money of England to be equally divided amongest his children. Item I give unto my thre daughters Joan Wyat, Jane Boughton, and Elizabeth Cole, the some of ten pounds of like lawfull English money equally to be divided amongest them. Item I give to John Wyat my sonne in lawe, the some of forty pouns of like lawfull English money to be equally devided amongest all his children, except Richard Wyat his sonne; Item I give to John Boughton my sonne in law the some of thirty pounds of like lawfull English money to be equally divided amongest all his children, except John Boughton, Item I bequeath to Henry Cole my sonne in lawe, the some of forty pounds of like lawfull English money to be divided equally amongst all his children, Sara his daughter, to be paied to him within one half yere next after my decease Item I give to Sara Cole one of the daughters of the said Henry Cole, one bedsteed one featherbed, one mattrice, two blankets, one coverlet, one bolster, six of shets, and the some of fortie poundes of like lawfull English money, to be paide unto her within thre yeres after my death, And if it happen the saide Sara to decease before the saide fortie poundes to be paied, then I give the same forty pounde of like lawfull English money to her father Henry Cole, to be paied hime within thre yeres after my decease; Item I give to John Boughton my grandchilde the some of ten poundes of like lawfull English money. Item I give the the poore people of Tighfield aforesaid, the some of twentie shillings, to be distributed amongest them, at the discrecon of my executor, Item I give to William Gabell nowe my servaunt one Cowe, Item I give to his sonne William Gabell, one Cowe bullock, and ten sheepe; Item I give to every one of them that are now my householde servaunts two shillings Item I give and bequeath to Richard Wiat, all my estate and terme of yeres which I have in the farme with th'appurtenaunces wherein I now dwell, and all my estate right and title that I have; in and to the Tiethes of Tighfield aforesaid, for the terme of five yeres nexte after my decease; after wch five yeres ended, I give and wholie release my estate and title; in and to the saide tiethes unto William Emory, clerke, from whom I have it, my will and mind is, that my legacies before given and bequeathed shall be discharged within thre yeres next after my decease, in order, as my Executor shall think fit, The residue of my goodes and chattels nott bequeathed, I give wholly and entirely to Richard Wyat my graundsonne, And I nominate and appoint the said Richard Wyat sole executor of this my last will and testament, to see my bodie to be buried in xpian Buryall, and my goodes disposed according to my tru entent and meaning in this my last will and Testanent expressed, In witnes whereof I have hereunto put my hande and confirmed this my last will and Testament, in manner and forme aforesaid, in the presence of John Pinckerd William Neale and Robert Curtis.

1601/2 The will of William Howes was proved on February 3 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. "Probatum fuit huiusmodi Testamentu' Apud London coram venerabili viro meo Johnne Gibson legum doctore Curie Prereogative Cantuar … tertio die mensis Februarij Anno Domini … Anglicane millimo sexcentesimo primo … Richardi Wyat executoris in huiusmodi Testamento nominat' …" [9]
