1641 John Howes wrote his will on July 15, and it was proved on October 7 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. "In the name of God Amen The fifteenth Day of July Anno dni 1641 And in the Seventeenth yeare of the Reigne of our Sovereigne Lord Charles by the grace of God of England Scotland France & Ireland King defender of the faith &c. I John Howes of Rothers Thrup in the County of Northampton yeoman being sicke in body but of good & perfect memorie for which I praise God doe therefore make & ordeyne this my last will & Testament in manner & forme following That is to say First & principally I doe give & bequeath my Soule into the hande of Almightie God myne Creator Redeemer& Sanctifier And my body to the Earth whereof it was made Trusting by the meritts of Jesus Christ my Saviour that all my synnes shalbe forgiven mee And that my Soule & body at the generall Resurrecton shalbe reunited & received into glorie. As Concerninge that estate which it hath pleased God of his goodnes to bestow upon mee I doe give & bequeath the same as followeth First I doe give & bequeath unto my sonne Marke Howes the sume of Twentie shillings of lawfull English money And I doe give & bequeath unto Daniel Howes my sonne his Executors Administrators & Assignes All my estate right title & interest which I have of & in one Messuage or Tenement & Close with the appurtenances in Rothers Thrupp aforesaid now or late in the tenure or occupacon of Richard Howes And of all & in all that on Yard land by estimation of Land by meadow & pasture with thappurtenances belonging to the said Messuage scituate & being in the parishes of Rothers Thrupp aforesaid & Wotton in the said County of North'ton and in either of them And of all & in all Comons and Comon of pasture profitte Comodities & hereditaments thereunto belonging now or late also in the occupacon of the said Richard Howes either in possession Revercon or Remainder after the determinacon of one Lease for yeares yet in being made by Thomas Howes my late Father to John Earle by Indenture bearing date the fifte day of Maye in the Sixt yeare of our late Soveraigne Lord King James over England to severall uses in the same Indenture expressed Alsoe I give & bequeath unto my said sonne Daniell Howes the some of One hundred pounds of lawfull money of England to bee payd unto him by my Executrix hereafter named when as hee shall accomplish the age of fifteen yeeres And I doe give & bequeath unto my welbeloved wife Bridgett all my estate righte title interest which I have either in possession or Revercon or Remaynder of and in all & singuler other the Lands Messuages Tenements & hereditaments in Rothers Thrupp and Wotton aforesaid & in either of them with thappurtenances parcell of the possessions of the Hospitall of St Johns in the Towne of Northampton in the county of North'ton If the Lease thereof made from the said hospital so long continue during soe many yeeres as shee shall live & Contynew a widdowe And if shee shall happen to depart this life or bee marryed to any person after my decease during the Contynuance of the saide lease Then I give & bequeath unto my said sonne Daniell his Executors Administrators & Assignes all my said estate right title & interest of and in all & singuler the last mentioned Lands of the said hospital And I doe hereby declare That if the said Bridgett my Wife and Daniell my sonne or either of them shall dureing the life of my said wife obtaine any new or further estate in the said Hospitall Lands or any of them That my wife Bridgett shall have the benefit therof during her life And that my sonne Daniell his Executors or Assignes shall have the same new or further estate after her decease. Alsoe I give unto my daughter Emme the some of Three hundred pounds of lawfull money of England to be payd unto her by by my Executrix hereafter named when as my said daughter shall accomplish the age of Twentie yeeres Alsoe I give unto my daughter Marie the like some of Three hundred pounds of like money to be payd unto her at her age of Twenty yeeres And unto my daughter Bridgett I give & bequeath the like some of Three hundred pounds of like money to be payd unto her at her age of Twenty yeeres And if any of my said Three daughters shall happen to departe this life before their said porcons shall become severally and respectively dew & payeable as aforesaid Then my will & meaning is that the porcon or porcons of such of them soe deceasinge shall remayne & come to the Survivors & survivor of them equally to be devided between them And I doe give & bequeath unto my sonne John Howes his Executors Administrators & Assignes All my estate right title & interest w'ch I have by a Lease for yeeres of & in six acres of pasture with thapputenance scituate lyeing & being in the parish of Cayton(Gayton?) in the said county of North'ton somet yeres in the occupacon of William Southall abutting upon the highway there Called ye Millway towards the East Alsoe I give & bequeath unto my Godson John Marke the some of Three pounds of Lawfull money of England And unto my daughter Susanna his wife I give the some of Tenn shillings of like money And unto my Grandchild John Howes I give the some of Three poundes of like money And unto my daughter Elizabeth Farmer I give the some of Tenn shillings of like money And unto the residue of my Godchildren I give to each one of them EIghteene pence apeece And unto the poore of the parish of Rother Thrupp aforesaid I give ye some of Thirty shillings of lawfull money of England to be distributed amongest such of them & in such manner & sorte as my Executrix shall thinke fitt And unto every one that shalbe my household servant at the tyme of my decease I give the some of Twoe shillings & six pence All the rest of my goods Cattalls & Chattells whatsoever herein not before disposed of or bequeathed I give & bequeath unto my said welbeloved wife Bridgett whome I make & ordayne sole Executrix of this my last will & Testament to see my debts payd & my funerals discharged and this my last will & Testament performed according to my true intent & meaning hoping that shee wilbe willing to increase my daughters porcons as shee shall see inst occasion for their preferment And I make Overseers of this my Will my brother George Wilkinson & my sonne Richard Farmer desireing them to be aydinge & assistinge to my Wife in the execucon of this my Wil giving to each of them for their paynes five shillings apeece in token of my love & remembrance of them And last of all if any ambiguitie doubt or question shall hereafter happen to grow or arise by reason of any imperfeccon or defect of or in any of the Clauses Wordes or Sentences in this my Will I doe hereby appoint that my said Overseers & the Survivor of them shall explaine order or determine the same in their wisedomes and discrecons In witness that this is my last will & Testament I have unto each Leafe thereof being twoe in number subscribed my name And to ye Labell that fixeth ye same twoe leaves Together my head or top thereof putting seale the day & yeare first above written John Howe Subscribed sealed & published in ye presence of Richard Farmar The marke of Thomas Pitchly The m'ke of Francis Hobbs Marke Howes John Schurpe.
