Notes for Barzillai Scott and Naomi Ballinger

1781 The birth of Barsilah, son of Barsilah and Mary Scott, on 24th day, 12th month, 1781 was recorded in the Mt. Holly Monthly Meeting records of Births and Deaths. [1] [2] [3]

1791 In month 1, The committee appointed to visit Barzillai Scott reported they had an opportunity with him, and were satisfied his request should be granted, with which the Meeting unites, he is therefore received into membership, with his children, to wit, Joseph, Mary, and Barzillai. [4]

1795 A certificate of removal was granted in the 5th month on behalf of Barzillai Scott, a minor, from Mount Holly, dated 7 present (month 10) by the Evesham Meeting. Said minor was placed apprentice of Job Haines. [5] [6]

1800 Barzilla Scott was listed in Northampton Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey for "Improved acres 0; unimproved acres 0; houses/lots 0; horses 0; cattle 1; covering horse 0; householder 1; merchant/shopkeeper 0; saw mill 0; grist mill 0; fulling mill 0; furnace 0; forge 0; tan yard" [7]

1803 On June 10, at the Evesham meeting, Burlington County, Barzillia Scott's request for a certificate of removal was withdrawn, because he had returned to the meeting. [8]

1804 Barzillai Scott Jr was Received at Mt. Holly MM from Evesham MM on September 7. [9]

1805 Granted certificate from Mt. Holly MM to Evesham MM in 1805. [10]

1806 Barzilla Scott and Naomi Ballinger were married on August 7 in Salem County, New Jersey. [11] [12]

1806 The Friends appointed report that they have given Barzillai Scott a copy of the disunion against him, and that he appears to have no intention of appealing. Dated in month 12. [13]

1806 Barzilla Scott was married out of unity in 1806 at Evesham MM and disowned [14] [15] [16]

1810 Barzilla Scott was listed in Northampton Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey for "Improved acres 0; unimproved acres 0; houses and lots of 10 acres and under 1/4?; horses 0; cattle 0; householders 0; single men 0; "Chairs & lined[?]" 0; "Suckies" 0; "Lightwaggons" 0." [17]

1816 Granted certificate from Evesham MM to Piles Grove MM in 1816. [18]

1816 Offered for marriage out of unity in 1816 at Evesham MM. Accepted. [19]

1820 Barzilla Scott was listed in Northampton Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey for "Improved acres: 0; unimproved acres: 0; houses and lots: 1; horses: 0; cattle: 0; wagons: 0; chairs: 0; sulkies: 0; householders: 0; single men: 0; dogs: 0." [20]

1830 Brazilla Scott lived in Miami Twp, Montgomery County, Ohio in a household with males: 1 (40 thru 49); and females: 1 (40 thru 49). [21]

1834 "Scott, Bar. shoe maker, Walnut, N. of Canal" i Cincinnati, Ohio. [22]

1836 Barzillai Scott had a boarding house and was a shoemaker at Walnut between Canal and 12th Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. [23]

1839 Brazillai Scott (NJ) shoemaker at Vine between Court and Canal Street, and residence 12 between Vine and Race, Cincinnati, Ohio. [24]

1840 Barzillai Scott lived in Cincinnati Ward 5, Hamilton County, Ohio in a household with males: 2 (20 thru 29), 1 (30 thru 39), and 1 (50 thru 59); and females: 1 (50 thru 59). [25]

1842 Barzillai Scott was a shoemaker at Canal corner 12th Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. [26]

1846 "Scott, B. shoe mkr, N s 12th, bet Elm and Plum", Cincinnati, Ohio. [28]

1848 Root Beer Manufacturers: "Scott, B. North-east corner 12th and Plum", Cincinnati, Ohio. [29]

1849 Barzillai Scott was a beer maker n.s. 12th b. Elm and Plum, Cincinnati, Ohio. [30]

1850 Barcillar Scott (age 68, born in New Jersey) lived in Cincinnati Ward 10, Hamilton County, Ohio, in a household with Milton Shutes (age 29) and Neoma Shutes (age 28), both born in New Jersey, and Sarah Page (age 25) and Elizabeth Page (age 23), both born in Ohio. [31] Perhaps the Pages were the daughters of Thomas Page, first cousin to Barzillai Scott.

1850 "Scott, Barzilla, root beer manuf. n.s. 12th bet. Elm and Plum", Cincinnati, Ohio [32].

1851 "Shute, Milton, northern ice n.e.c.19th & Plum, bds. B. Scott's", Cincinnati, Ohio [33]. "Scott, Barzillai, n.s. 12th bet. Elm and Plum", Cincinnati, Ohio [34].

1860 Brazillia Scott (age 79, born in New Jersey) lived in Stonelick Twp, Clermont County, Ohio, in a household with John S Combs (age 39), Cyntha F Combs (age 34), Mary A Combs (age 7), Emma Combs (age 4), James L Combs (age 2), Mary A Ward (age 14), Mary E Boggs (age 26), and Elizabeth Frazee (age 70). His estate was valued at $20,000. [35]

1863 The will of Barzilla Scott was dated April 22 in Clermont County, Ohio and was produced in Clermont County Court on May 20, 1864. Specific legacies were given to Catherine Shute of Cincinnati, widow of Milton Shute, deceased; Margaretta Babbitt, wife of Hathaway Babbitt; Elizabeth Page; Jane Johnson, the sister of Catharine Shute; Elma Fogg of Salem County, New Jersey; Rebecca S. Pickett wife of Mchain S Pickett of Salem County, New Jersey; Sarah M Wright wife of Ebenezer M Wright, of Salem County New Jersey; and Rebecca Frazee daughter of William Frazee, of Clermont County. The residual estate was bequeathed to the children (the children were named) of deceased sister Mary Garwood and deceased brother Joseph Scott. Barzilla Garmond of Burlington County, New Jersey and Jacob Olemmer of Cincinnati, Ohio were named executors. [36] [37]

1864 Barzillai Scott died on 8 of May (5 month), at age 81y, 4m, 16d; born at Burlington County, New Jersey; and was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. The grave marker names wife Naomi, died 17 of 6 month, 1846 at age 61y, 2m, 17d, born in New Jersey. [38] [39] [40]
