1706 "Nathaniel Barnardiston Gent. of St Mathew Friday street at the sign of ye Golden lamp, in Friday Street and Bethia Fowler of St Botolph Billingsgate at ye Whitebear in Thames Street" were "married by Mr Jno Hoot of Snailwell in Cambridgeshire" on July 6 at St Anne and St Agnes, London, England. [1]

1771 Nathaniel Barnardiston died on Sunday January 6. His death was reported on January 8 in the following newspaper notice: "Died On Sunday Nathaniel Barnardiston, Esq.; age 90, the oldest Stock-Broker in London." [2]

1769 Nathaniel Barnardiston wrote his will on January 26, 1769, and added a codicil on August 28, 1769. [3]

I Nathaniel Barnardiston of Islington in the County of Middlesex Gentleman do make this my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to say Whereas I am entitled to an Annuity of yearly Rent Charge of One hundred and twenty pounds for the Remainder of a Term of ninety nine years in case my Sons Nathaniel and John Barnardiston or either of them shall so long live Issuing and payable out of the Manor or reputed Manor of Edgioct(?) and several Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments in the County of Worcester late the Estate of Francis Baber Esquire deceased Now I do hereby give and bequeath the said Annuity or Yearly Rent Charge to my said two Sons Nathaniel Barnardiston and John Barnardiston for and during their joint lives equally to be divided between them and from and after the death of either of them I give and bequeatn the said Annuity of yearly Rent Charge to the Survivor of my said two Sons for all the Remainder of my Term and Interest therein and my Will is that all my Freehold Messuages Lands and Tenements at Royston and Cheshunt in the County of Hertford shall descend to my said Eldest Son Nathaniel Barnardiston my Heir at Law and I give devise and bequeath all that my Freehold Messuage or Tenement situate standing and being in Fleet Street in the City of London now in the Tenure or Occupation of Thomas Branford Exchange Broker unto Sir Robert Clark of Shire Lane near Lincolns Inn Baronet Joseph Leeds of Cornhill in the City of London aforesaid Merchant and my said Eldest Son Nathaniel Barnardiston Gentleman formerly a Linnen Draper of Cheapside in the said City of London In Trust for my Grandson Nathaniel Barnardiston until he shall attain the age of Twenty three years and on his atttaining the said Age of twenty three years I give devise and bequeath the same unto my siad Grandson to hold to him his Heirs and Assigns forever And in case may said Grandson shall happen to die before the said Age of twenty three years then and in such Case I give devise and bequeath the said Messuage or Tenement unto my said two Sons Nathaniel and John Barnardiston To hold to them their Heirs and Assigns for ever and in failure of Issue of their two Bodies I give devise and bequeath the same to my Nephew Arthur Barnardiston of Wapping in the County of Middlesex aforesaid Sail Maker to hold to him his Heirs and Assigns for ever and I give and bequeath unto my said said two Sons Nathaniel and John Barnardiston the Sum of five hundred pounds a piece but not to be paid to them until a Mortgage made to my by Sir John Price Baronet of an Estate situate at Early Court near Reading in the County of Berks for for securing to me the payment of the Sum of five thousand five hundred pounds and Interest shall be fully paid off and satisfied And I give and forgive unto my said Son Nathaniel Barnardiston all such Sum and Sums of Money which he shall owe me at the time of my death on Bond or any other security wahtsoever and I give and forgive unto my said Son John Barnardiston all such Sum and Sums of Money as e shall owe me at the time of my death on BOnd or otherwise howsoever And I gie and bequeath unto my said Son John Barnardiston a debt due to me from RObert Ball Esquire of one hundred and Seventy one pounds or thereabouts And I give and bequeath unto my now Servant Julian Goodin or such other Servant or Servants as shall live with me at the time of my death a years wates over and above what I may then happen to owen to her or them to be paid to her or them within three Months next after my decease And I give and bequeath unto Thomas Gibbeson of Hemlock Court in the Parish of Saint of Saint Clement Danes and County of Middlesex aforesaid Gentleman the Sum of Ten Guineas and I geve and bequeath unto my Sister Elizabeth Widow of Thomas Brand late of Bury Saint Edmonds in the County of Suffolk Gentleman deceased the Sum of Twenty Guineas and to her and all my other Sisters Nephews and Nieces One Guinea each for a Ring in remembrance of me And I give and bequeth unto my Niece Elizabeth daughter of my Sister Elizabeth Brand and Widow of the Reverend Mr Evans deceased the Sum of Twenty Guineas and to my sid Nephew Arthur Barnardiston the Sum of fifty Guineas and to my Nephew Samuel Marriot the Sum of fifty Guineas and to Mr. Joseph Barnardiston Stationer the Sum of Ten Guineas and to Elizabthe Holmes Late ELizabeth Meeks for er kindess and great care she took of me in late Illness the Sum of Ten Guineas and to Ronald Mac Daonal of Islington aforesaid Peruke Maker the Sum of Thewnty Guineas and to [blank] Crawley Widow who attended my late Wife in her last Illness and wo was with her at the time of her eath the Sum of twenty Guineas and to the Reverend Mr John Stafford a dissenting Minister who succeeded the Reverend Doctor Guise as Minister of his Congregation the Sum of twenty Guineas and to the Reverend Mr. Jennings the Minister of the Dissenting Congregation at Islington aforesaid the sum of Twenty Guineas and to the Reverend Mr. John Farmer a dissenting Minister the Sum of Ten Guineas and whereas the several Sums of Money that I have already given for the Advancement of my said SOns and lent to them and which are now due and owing to me together with the Legacies given to them by this my Will do amount to much more that what they could claim or be entitled unto out of my personal Estate by Virtue of the Custom of the City of London of which City I am an Ancient Freeman Now it is my Will And I do hereby order and direct that each of my said two Sons shall within three Months next after my decease execute and deliver to the said Sir Robert Clark and Joseph Leeds a Writing purporting to be a confirmation of this my will and a Release of all their Right and Claim to my personal Estate and every part thereof under or by virtue of the said Custom of the said City of London and in case they or either of them shall refuse or neglect so to do then I do revoke and make void all and every the Legacies Gifts and bequests herein before given or made to them respectively or to either of them that shall so neglect or refuse to meake execute and deliver such Writing as aforesaid and then and in such Case I do hereby declare that it is my Will that my said Sons or either of them that shall so as aforesaid or neglect or refuse shall not be entitled to have any share or part of my personal Estate by Virtue of this my Will and that such share or part of my said personal Estate shall go and be take as part of Residue of my Personal Estate hereinafter bequeathe An all the rest and Residue of my Goods Chattels and personal Estate I gibe and bequeath unto the said Sir Robert Clark Joseph Leeds and my said eldest Son Nathaniel Barnardiston upon the sereral Trust hereinafter mentioned that is to say upon Trust in the first place to call in all Moneyes whach shall be owing to me at the time of my death and place the same from time to time in some or one of the publick funds of this Kingdom and out of the Interest and Dividends thereof or so much thereof as they shall think fit to place my siad Grandon Nathaniel Barnardiston the son of my said Son John Barnardiston at School and when he shall arrive at a proper Age to place or put him to such Trade or profession as they shall think proper and to allow him from time to time such Maintenance as they shall think fit until he shall attain his Age of twenty three years and when he shall hae attained that Age then upon Trust to assign and transfer unto my said Grandson all the said Residue of my said Personal Estate and Effects herein before given and bequeathed In Trust for my said Grandson as aforesaid but in case my said Grandson shall happen to die before he shall attain his said Age of twenty three years and shall have any Child or Children behind him at the time of his death thaen upon Trust to assign and transfer all the said Residue of my said person Estate to such Child or Children when he she or they slall attain their Age or respective ages of twenty three years but in case my said Granson shall happen to die before he shall attain his said Age of twenty three years and shall not leave andy Child or Children who shall attain the said Age or Ages of twenty three years then upon Trust to assign and transfer the said Reidue of my said personal Estate to any other Child or Children that my said two sons Nathaniel Barnardiston and JOhn Barnardiston or either of the may happen to leave behind them at the time of their deaths equally to be divided etween them share and share alike if more than one such Child at their Age or Ages of twenty three years and if no such Child or Children then upon Trust to assign and transfer the siad Residue of my said Personal Estate to my said Nephew Arthur Barnardiston his Executors and Administrators And I do hereby revoke all former Wills by me made And do constitute and appoint the said Sir Robert Clark Joseph Leeds and my said Son Nathaniel Barnardiston Executors of this my will and in case of the death of any one of my said Executors and Trustees my Will and mind is and I do hereby order and direct that the two Survivors of them shall nominate and appoint another person in the room and stead of him so dying and so from time to time as it shall happen so that there may be always three Subsisting And my Will and mind is that my said Executors and Trustees shall from time to time reimburse themselves all such Sum and Sums of Money as they may happen to expend for and by means of the Executorship and Trust Account and lastly I do desire to be buried in the burying Ground in Bunhill Row near my late Wife in such decent and proper manner as my said Executors in their discretion shall think proper In Witnesss whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this twenty sixth day of January in the year of Our Lord One thousand seven hundred and sixty nine. The Mark of Nathaniel Barnardiston, Signed Sealed published and declared by the said Testator Nathaniel Barnardiston as and for his last Will and Testament in the Presence of us who at his request and in his Presence and in the Presence of each other have Subscribed Our Names as Witnesses thereto William Paulson -- John Brotherton -- Francis Deakin all of Islington.
This is a Codicil to the last Will and Testament of me Nathaniel Barnardiston of Islington in the County of Middlesex Gentleman as follows that is to say I Give and bequeath to the Reverend Mr. Jennings the now Pastor if the Congregation of Protestant dissnter Assembling for religious Worship at Islington aforesaid and to Jasper Walter formerly a Linnen Draper in Cornhill London and to Mr. Horton of Cornhill aforesaid pastry Cook and to Joseph Thornthwaite now or late of Paternoster Row London Taylor the Sum of One hundred pounds upon Trust that they or the Survivors of Survivor of them do as soon as conveniently may be after my decease lay out the same in the Purchase of so much Stock or Government Securities as the said Sum of One hundred Pounds shall extend to purchase as they or the Survivors or Survivor of them shall think fit and from time to time as the Interest dividends or other yearly proceed thereof shall become due and payable to pay the same to the pastor of the said Congregation for the time being or permit and suffer him and each successive Pastor of the said Congregation to receive the same as long as the said COngration shall subsist and if the said Congregation shall at any time hereafter be discontinued or dissolved then and in such Case I Give and bequeath the said Stock or Securities in which the said Sum of One hundred Pounds shall or may be invested unot my Executors in my said will particularly mentioned and described for the purposes therein mentioned And I do hereby Order and direct that on the decease of any one of the said Trustees the Survivors of them shal within six Months after such decease chose another person to be a Trustee with such Survivors and so as often as any one of the Trustess for the time being of the said Stock shall die a New Trustee shh be chosen by the Survivors and such Neww Trustee together with the Surviving Trustees for the time being shall from time to time be invested with the said Trust Stock to the intent that the siad Trust my not devolve upon a single Trustee or vest in the Executors or Administrators of a Surviving Trustee but may always continue vested in four Trustees and my Mind and Will is And I do hereby declare that the pastor of the said Congregation for the time being shall always be one of the said Trustees. And I also order that it shall and may be lawful for the said Trustees by and out of the said joint Stock or the produce thereof in the first place to reimburse themselves all the costs they shall be put unto in the Execution of the Trust aforesaid and that they sll not be answeraboe for any more of the Trust Monies than thall bome to heir hands nor for any loss which may happen without their wilful default nor for the Acts of Deeds of each other In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this twenty eighth day of August in the year of Our Lord One thousand seven hundred and sixty nine.
