Notes for John Potts and Mercy King

1738 Mercy King, daughter of William King, was born June 4, 1738 in Kingwood, New Jersey. [1] [2] [3]

1792 Mercy Potts was named as a widowed daughter in the will of William King, of Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon County. Several children were also named. [4]

Mercy King married John Potts. [5]

"James Wamsley, father of Elizabeth Barnes (Wamsley) Moore, was born in Ireland, September 29, 1770, died either in 1863 or 1865; he married Sarah Mott Potts, torn May 23, 1792, in Kingwood, New Jersey, died May 26, 1883, daughter of Joseph Potts, who married Sarah Mott in June, 1781, granddaughter of John Potts, and Mercy King, great-granddaughter of Thomas Potts, Jr., born in 1713, died in 1731, and Susanna, of Bristol township, Philadelphia county, great-great-granddaughter of "Thomas Potts, Sr., the Quaker Preacher," whom William Penn called "honest Thomas Potts." [6]

"John Potts was settled at Kingwood in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, who is believed to have been John, the son of Thomas Jr, and Susanna Potts of Bristol Township, Philadelphia Connty, Pennsylvania, though the proof of such relationship is yet incomplete. There seems to be no other John for this place, and one or more of Thomas and Susanna's children are known to have settled in New Jersey. Also, this John Potts was neighbor to, and closely associated with, other Potts' from Pennsylvania. John Potts married Mercy King, daughter of William and Abigail (Doughty) King. She was born June 4, 1738. They lived at Kingwood, not far from Pittstown. John Potts was probably a farmer, and was a neighbor to Daniel Potts, a native of Bristol Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. In 1797, he went on the refunding bond of Rebecca Emley Potts, widow of his late neighbor Daniel Potts. So far as known John and Mercy Potts had but two children [Joseph and William King]." [7]
