1671 John Stokes witnessed the Quaker wedding of John Carleill (broadweaver) and Mary Goodwonne at Westberry Street. [1]

1672 John Stokes witnessed the Quaker wedding of Walter Enoch (sawyer) and Elizabeth Tomkins at Devonshire House. [2]

1672 John Stokes witnessed the Quaker wedding of Stephen Fisher and Anna Wright at Devonshire House. [3]

1672 John Stokes witnessed the Quaker wedding of Thomas Brand and Mary Fuller at Devonshire House and of John Newman and Elizabeth Ryley at Devonshire House. [4]

1676 John Stoakes witnessed the Quaker wedding of John Goodwin and Katherine Ellis at Devonshire House and of John Newman and Elizabeth Ryley at Devonshire House. [5] [6]

1676 John Stokes, of Wentworth Street, Spittlefields, London, married Ann Barber of the same place, on 1 March (month 1), at an Assembly of the people of God (Quakers) at Devonshire House, without Bishops Gate, London. Witnessed by Tho: Stoakes, John Miller, and others. [7] John Stoakes was a baker. [8]

1676 Thomas Hooton was one of the inhabitants of New Jersey signing the concessions and agreements. [9] [10]

1677 Anna Stokes, a daughter of John Stoaks, baker, & Ann his wife dwelling in Wentworth Street near Spillte fields was born the third of the first month [March 3], 1677. [11] [12]

1678 "Thomas Hooton of the parish of St. Ann, Black Friars, and John Stokes of Wentworth street, in the parish of Stepney, both of which are places in London, in the county of Middlesex, England, became owners, as tenants in common, of a certain amount of proprietary rights in West New Jersey. Thomas was a tallow chandler, and John a baker ... The deed conveying this interest was made from William Penn and the other trustees of Edward Bylynge to Thomas Hooton in the year 1678, who immediately conveyed the undivided half-part thereof to John Stokes." [13]

1678-79 John Stokes purchased 1/32 of a share of land in New Jersey from Thomas Hooton. "John Stokes: one two thirtieth part of Tho. Hootons propriety. One conveyance by Loise ? Reidner? bearing date the 21st - 22nd of February 1678 made by Thomas Hooton of the one part to John Stokes of the other p't of one two & thirtieth p'te of the said Thomas Hootons propriety for the consideration of fower pounds thirteene shillings & nyne penies to the said Tho Hooton paid. Witnessed by & exported before Jeremiah Howes, Simon Knight, & Benj Gladman." [14] John Stokes was one of thirteen small proprieters who purchased shares from the original Yorkshire proprieters within the first year of their offering. [15]

1679 A tenant of John Stokes emigrated to Rhode Island: "It was directed in a letter to Mr. William Harris for him to deliver, but he is arrived in Narragansett before it came, so that it lies enclosed in that letter at his landlord's, one John Stokes, a baker, in Wentworth Street, near Spitalfields. Copy of the letter is enclosed." [16]

1682 On 23 June, "John Stokes, son of John Stokes of Wentworth Street baker in Stepney, Middlesex was born of Ann his wife, ye 23th day of ye 5th mo 1682. witn[esses] Cath Trigg, Mary Wooly, Briget Demaroy, An Brown, An Green, Eliz Stokhousa, Sara Browning, Mary Larsons." [17] [18] [19].

1686 "Elizabeth Stokes dau of John (& Ann) Stoakes of Wintworth Street Baker, was born 8.2m.86. [April 8, 1686] Wit Eliz. Clark, Eliz. Plant, Cath. Trig, Margt Halliford." [20]

1687 "Abigail Stokes dau of John Stoakes of Wentworth Street Baker, was born 17.10m.87 [December 17, 1687]. Wit Eliz. Sikes, ?, An Brown, Eliz. Plant." [21]

1693 Elizabeth Stokes, widow, of Winford St, Spittlefields [perhaps the widow of Henry Stokes], married John Miller at Devonshire House, on November 2. Witnessed by John Miller, Elizabeth Stoakes, John Stoakes, and others. [22]

"John Stokes, however, remained in London, supplying the people with bread, and husbanding his means to develop his interests here through his brother Thomas. Of this there is undoubted evidence, for, as late as in 1719, in a conveyance of land in this State, he is called John Stokes of Wentworth street, London, biscuit baker, etc." [23]

1699 Ann Stokes, wife of John, baker, died of fever at Winfred St, Spittlefields, at age 50, on 9 February (12th month), 1698/99. Monthly Meeting Ratclif Barking, Buried at Checker Alley. [24]

1702 John Stokes was listed in the poll (voting) book for Wellingborow [Wellingborough], Hamford-Shoo Hundred, Northampton, England in 1702 and 1705. [25]

1709 "John Stokes, of Wentworth Street in the parish of Stepny in the county of Middlesex, baker, aged about 58 years, died the 21st 4 mo called June 1709. Searchers report of a feavor and was buryed in ditto ground, i.e. near Bunhillfields." (Devonshire Burials) [26]

1683 Return of Survey, dated October 2, for John Stokes, of 162 a. on Rancokus R, between Bernard Devonish and Thomas Gardner, incl. 12 ½ a. on the point of the river forks. [27] [28] [Map] Tracts in Wellingborough Twp were conveyed to John Stokes at the death of Thomas John Harding by the executor, John Wills. [29] [30] [31]

1684 Return of survey, for John Stoaks, of 150 a. on Rancokus alias Northampton R., between Bernard Devonish, Tho. Gardner and the Mill Creek. [32]

1684 Land sold to John Budd was bounded to the east by John Stokes [Stoakes] along Thomas Ollive millbrook. [33]

1687 Land on Thomas Ollive's millbrook, sold to Symon Charles by Bernard Devonish, was bounded to the east by "ye lott of John Stokes". [34]

1695 Land purchased by John Tatham on the Island of Burlington was bounded on the south by land of John Stokes. [35]

1695 Land purchased by Symon Charles of Burlington County, was bounded on the east by land of John Stokes. [36]

1696 Return of survey, to John Hollinshead for John Stoaks, of a lot in Burlington by the old burying ground on the Southside of Broad St., a corner lot, 33 f. on Broad St., 13 perches long, S. by E. by Second, W. from High St. [37]

1700 John Hilliard gave a deed, dated December 28, to John Stoakes, both of Burlington County, yeomen, for 1-32 of a share of W. J., excepting 300 acres, i. e. the first and second dividend of 150 a. each, and the lots in Burlington and town bounds. [38]

1716 John Stokes "came to his end by an unnatural death, in ye lower end of Gloucester county." [39]

1716 The administration on the estate of John Stokes was granted, on April 27, to John Hogg and William Harrison. [40]

1716 The bond, dated June 8, of John Hugg and William Harrison, both of Gloucester County, was made as administrators of the estate. Joseph Hug? fellow bondsman. [41]

1716 The inventory of the personal estate of John Stokes, dated July 5, showed a balance of £27.3.11; made by Thomas Sharp and Jeremiah Bass. [42]
