We are researching Mary Barnard, daughter of John Barnard, of Stepney, married to Thomas Stokes.
John Barnard, yeoman of miles and green, and wife Sarah had 4 children christened at Saint Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex, England. Stepney Green is a remnant of a larger area of Common Land formerly known as Mile End Green in Stepney, London. [1]
1645 Mary Bernard, daughter of John and Sarah Barnard of mile end green was reportedly baptized on March 25, 1645 in Saint Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex, England. However, the mother in this record was named Sara, not Frances. [2]
1646 Sarah Barnard, daughter of John Barnard and Sarah Barnard of mile end green, was baptized on April 20, 1646 in St Dunstan And All Saints, Stepney, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England. Frances Munt was not the mother of this Sarah Barnard. [3]
Some researchers have named John and Frances Munt Barnard as the parents of Mary Barnard and report that Frances Munt was a daughter of Samuel Munt of Peldon, Essex. [4] We seek evidence about this possibility. The documents that we have found suggest that this hypothesis is incorrect.

John Bernard, son-in-law of Samuel Munt was in Thorpe by 1689. Was he the same as John Bernard of Stepney?
1653 Mary and Sarah were noted as under the age of 21 when their father, Samuel Munt of Pelden, wrote his will dated November 16, 1653.
1657 Frances Munt Barnard (daughter) and her husband John Barnard and their two daughters Mary and Sarah were named in the will of Samuel Munt, as was Samuel's son Humphrey Munt [see 1689 petition]. [7] [8]

1690 "That the cause wherein Anthony Forster and others are Plaintiffs, and John Bernard Administrator to Henry Munt, who was surviving executor to John Markland, and the children of Humphry Munt, which was to be heard on Monday next, shall be heard on Tuesday next" [12]
1690 "Upon hearing Counsel this day at the Bar, upon the petition of Anthony Forster and Elizabeth his wife, and James Browning an infant, by his guardian, executor of the last will of Katherine Browning his late mother, deceased, which said Elizabeth and Katherine were the only children of John Markland, lately deceased, being an appeal from a decree upon a Bill of Review of Humphrey Munt, by the Lord Commissioners of the Great Seal of England, on the 5th day of December, 1689, and from a dismission of their bill with costs; as also upon the answer of John Bernard, assignee and administrator of Humphrey Munt, deceased, who was executor of the last will and testament of John Markland, and Robert, Samuel, Sarah, Anne, and Mary Munt, children of the said Humphrey Munt, by the said John Bernard their guardian (who was made a party to this appeal, by order of this House, dated the 11th of January, 1689:) After due consideration had of what was offered by Counsel on either side thereupon, it is ordered and adjudged, by the Lords Spiritual and Temporal in Parliament assembled, that the said Decree, made by the Lords Commissioners of the Great Seal of England, from which the said Anthony Forster, Elizabeth his wife, and the said James Browning, appealed to this House, shall be, and is hereby, reversed." 1690 On 3 April, John Barnard stated that he lived in Thorpe in Essex. Anne Munt lived at Troyford in Sussex and Sarah Munt lived at Halsted in Essex (both daughters of Humphrey Munt?). [15]

1633 John Barnerd, son of Francis Barnerd, was baptized on May 30, 1633 in Collegiate Church Of St Katherine By the Tower, City Of London, London, England. [23] The gender of Francis is [incorrectly] reported as female in the transcription of this record. The marriage of John Barnard and Francis Munt has been reported [erroneously] on this date at this church without documentation in some reports.

The abstract of Samuel Munt's will, dated 16 November, 1653 suggests that he is the father of Francis, married to John Bernard: "His body to be buried in the churchyard of Peldon. Named his eldest son, James. Mentioned his land called Popes & Millers in Clacton Magna. Son, Samuel. Son, Humphrey, under 21. Daughter, Frances Barnard. 2 grandchildren, Sarah & Mary Barnard, under 21. His tenement called Chambers in Thorpe, now occupied by, Thomas Button. Tenement called Moones. John Barnard, father of said Mary & Sarah. Son, John, under 21 . Tenements in Holland Parva called Woodhouse & Toms. Maidservant, Elizabeth Hands. John Munt, of East Barfold, his brothers son. Robert Alefounder the younger, living at Elmsted Hall. Wife, Sarah, & son, James, executors. "Mr. Robert Alefounder of Elmsteed Hall, the elder, my very good friend," supervisor. Mary Bernard Stokes was reportedly the daughter of John and Frances Bernard, of Stephney. Her mother, Frances, was the daughter of Samuel Munt, of Peldon Hall, Essex, yeoman, who died in 1653 and was buried in the churchyard of Peldon. [29]

1687 Anthony Patison and Mary Barnard of Bishopsgate were married. Witnessed by John and Elizabeth Barnard and others. [32]
1692/93 "John Barnard of the parish of BishopGate, aged about sixty ffive years. Dyed the 22th day of the 12 mo Fby 2/3 of a cancer. as the common searchers report and was buryed in cheq' Alley." [33]
