Wise family Grave Marker in Richland County, Ohio
We speculatively show this John Wise of Richland County, Ohio, married to Magdalena, as the son of George Wise and Rebecca, of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania based on associations with several other families that were common to both areas. We seek futher evidence to clarify this possible relationship, one way or the other. It is also possible that these notes, instead, refer to John Jacob Wise, son of Jacob and Anna Maria Haffner [1].
Col. John Wise, commanded a Pennsylvania militia regiment in the war of 1812 and was the father of Jacob Wise, born in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Penn., in the year 1802. [2]
John Wise was a farmer in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and had son Frederick Hoffman Wise, born 1804. [3]
1817 John (miller), Jacob (22 acres, cooper), John B (19 acres), Jacob Senior (107 acres), Jacob Jr (100 acres) [4], Frederick (40 acres), and John Colonel (37 acres) Weise [5] were taxed in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. [6]
1819 John Wise and wife Magdalene sold land to George Wise, all of South Middleton Twp, on September 20. The land was adjacent to lands of David Rowen and John Kauffman. John Wise had purchased the land from John Kauffman and wife Catharine on March 30, 1815. [7]

Weise were taxed in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. [10]
1822 John Wise and wife Magdalene sold 3 acres of land to Jacob Wise of Dickinson Twp, on June 2. [11]
1823 George (blacksmith), Jacob Sr (156 acres), John (53 acres, blacksmith), Jacob Jr (100 acres), Frederick (40 acres), Henry (107 acres), John Colonel (33 acres), and Leonard (cropper) Weise were taxed in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. [12]
1824 John Wise and wife Magdalene sold land to David Wise, cordwainer, all of South Middleton Twp, on April 3. John Wise had purchased the land from John Kauffman and wife Catharine. [13]
1825 John Wise moved to Richland County, Ohio. [14] [15]
1827 Colonel John Wise was not taxed in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. [16]
1827 John Wise and David Wise were taxed for personal property in Madison Twp, Richland County, Ohio. [17]
1830 John Wise (age 50-60) lived in Madison Twp, Richland County, Ohio with wife (age 50-60), two sons (age 10-15 and 15-20) and one daughter (age 10-15). [18]
1840 John Wise Sr (age 60-70) lived in Madison Twp, Richland County, Ohio with wife (age 60-70) and one son (age 20-30). The families of John Wise (age 20-30) and of Christian Wise (age 30-40) were listed on the same page. [19]

1845 The will of John Wise was recorded in Richland county, with witnesses Thomas and Henry Bosler and executors were sons David and Henry Wise. The will named wife Magdalena; sons David, Jacob, Frederick, and John; and daughters Anna Marie Magdalena and Susanna. Henry was to maintain Magdalena. [20] [21]
1850 Son, Henry Wise (age 31) and Mary (age 23) lived in Madison, Richland County, Ohio with children John (age 3), Isaac B (age 1) and Magdalena (age 72, born PA) [22]
1858 Magdalena Wise died on March 25, at age 77y 1m 6d and was buried in Richland County, Ohio.

The relationship to Leonard Wise [26], who died in 1843 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and whose estate involved Jacob Wise of Richland County, Ohio, is uncertain. We suspect that he was a distant cousin, as we show. It is plausible that these two families are related. Help in clarifying the relationship would be greatly appreciated.
