Notes for Joseph Saunders and Deborah

1688 On September 26, Joseph Saunders, son of John Saunders, weaver of Andover, Hampshire, started an eight year apprenticeship with Henry Hatchett, Citizen and Haberdasher of London. [1]

This Indenture Witnesseth, That Joseph Sanders Son of John Sanders of Andover in the County of Hamp, weaver, doth put himself Apprentice to Henry Hatchett Citizen and Haberdasher of London to learn his Art: and with him (after the manner or an Apprentice) to serve from the day of the date hereof unto the full end and term of Eight years, from thence next following, be fully complete and ended. During which time the said Apprentice his said Master faithfully shall serve, his Secrets keep, his lawful Commandments every where gladly do … In witness whereof, the parties above-named, to these Indentures interchangeably have put their hands and seals, the twenty sixth day of September in the fourth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King James the second of England, &c. Anno Dom. 1688 Joseph Saunders

Henry Hatchett also had apprentices John Watkins (1678), Benjamin Jelliff (1692, son of Benjamin Jelife of Handerver [sic], Hampshire, Barber) and James Brackstone (1696, son of Anthony Brackstone of Witchurch, Hampshire, yeoman). Henry Hatchett's son Thomas Hatchett was apprenticed to a Merchant Taylor (Ambrose Ryley) in 1701.

1695 April 4 "Christenings in Aprill 1695. 4 Mary ye d of Joseph & Rebecca Saunders." [2]

1722 Burial "Deborah wife of Mr. Joseph Saunders of St Pancras parish buried Septr. 8th 1722" in St. Michael, Highgate, in Middlesex, England. [3]

1723 Joseph Saunders wrote his will on September 18. [4]

I Joseph Saunders Citizen and Haberdasher of London being weak in body but of sound and disposing Mind Memory and Understanding praised be Almighty God therefore for the avoiding of disputes after my decease make this present Writing or Instrument my last Will and Testament and I do hereby dispose of all my Estate Reall and personal or of whatsoever nature or tenure it be in manner following that is to say First I give and bequeath unto my loving Sister Mrs Miriam Barnardiston the now Wife of Mr John Barnardiston one Annuity or yearly payment of twenty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid unto her quarterly or by four equal payments in the year during the term of her natural life such Annuity to be paid unto her upon the four most usual quarter days or days of payment in the year that is to say on the nine and twentyeth day of September on the five and twentieth day of December on the five and twentieth day of March and on the four and twentyeth day of June respectively the first payment thereof to begin and to be made on such of the said days as shall happen next and imedidatley after my decease And I herby will and direct that the said Annuity shall be from time to time payd unto her own hands and that her Receipt for the same whether sole or marryed shall be a full discharge unto my Executors hereinafter named it being my express direction and full Intention that the said Annuity shall not be lyable unto any of the debts or encombrances of her said husband and that her said husband shall not intermeddle therewith or dispose thereof and I hereby subject all my Estate both Reall and personal or of whatsoever nature tenure it be unto the payment thereof and do charge the same therewith And do direct that my only and well beloved daughter Mrs Mary Saunders be Trustee for her the said Miriam Barnardiston in the premisses also I desire my said Daughter if she thinks proper but not otherwise to take some care of Joseph Barnardiston and Thomas Wood and also of my Cozen Richard Pottycary after such manner only as she shall think fitt and not otherwise Item It is my Will and desire if I dye single and unmarried that I be buryed in Highgate Chappell yard in the County of Middlesex my Funerall be performed in the same manner and at the same Expence as my said late Wife's was And that Mr Robert Hartreen(?) be employed to undertake the same but that Mr Puttfatt do provide the Hearse and coaches And I desire that Mr William Newbury of Lombard Street Norwich Factor Mr John Wilkins of Watling street London Mercant Mr Isaac Feild near the Bearshead at Smithfeild Barrs Cheesemonger Mr James Tanner of Benfeild in the County of Berks Mr Thomas Jordan of Snowhill London Turner and Mr Joseph Dawson of Welborn Bridge London Cheese Monger may bear my pall but if they or any of them dye or are not to be had that their & any of their places in such case may be supplyed by sum other of my friends as my Executors shall see proper And I give unto each of my Pall bearers a Ring of twenty shillings value and also a Hatband and Gloves Item I do desire that a Peice of Norwich Crape of about the value of three pounds be bought of my said Friend Mr William Newbury and that the same be equally divided between and disposed unto the two Servant Maids which shall be living with me at the time of my decease for their Mourning Item I give a Ring of Fifteen shillings value and also a Hatband and Gloves unto my late serv. Mr William Purdue but I desire that he do not attend my Funerall Item I give one other ring of the value of fifteen shilings and also a Hatband and Gloves unto my old Friend Mr Benjamin Jelliff which I disire may be sent to him the day after my Internment it being my request that I may not have a large company at my Buryal Item I give unto the said Joseph Barnardiston Thomas Wood Richard Pottercary unto each and every of them a Hatband and pair of Gloves and I give Gloves only unto such Women as my Executors shall think fit to invite to my Funerall which I desire may be very private Item I give unto the Reverend Mr John Nesbitt a Hatband and Gloves if living at the time of my decease Item I give unto the Reverend Mr Conder a Hatband and Gloves Item I give unto the Reverend Mr Sleigh of Highgate a Hatband and Gloves which I desire may be sent unto them respectively And I desire that my couzin the said Richard Pottercary may be sent for immediately after my decease and that my dwelling house and Goods may be putt under his care and inspection until my Executors may be imbezled Item I give unto my good and loving Friend Mr Edward Leeds of Hackney in the said County of Middlesex a Ring of the value of twenty five shillings and also a Hatband and pair of Gloves And I desire him to attend my Funerall … And I give unto his son Mr Edward Leeds junior a Ring of a Guinea value and also a Hatband and pair of Gloves And all the Rest and Residue of my Estate both reall and personal or of what nature or tenure soeever it be after payment of all my just debts and subject unto the payment of the said twenty pounds per Annun unto my said Sister Barnardiston I devise and bequeath unto my said only and well beloved Daughter Mrs Mary Saunders to hold the same unto the said Mrs Mary Saunders her heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns forever And I hereby nominate and make the said Mrs Mary Saunders and the said Mr Edward Leeds the Father joint Executors of this my Will And I hereby revoak and make void all former Wills at any time heretofore made by me and declare this only to be taken as and for my last Will In Witness whereof I the said Joseph Saunders the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament conteined in this and the foregoing sheet of paper thereof at the bottom thereof I have sett my hand and unto this Sheet my hand and seal this Eighteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred twenty three. Joseph Saunders Signed Sealed Published and declared by the said Joseph Saunders the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence and at his request have subscribed our names as Witnesses thereto Wm.Young Tho. Gregg William Jones.

1723 Burial "Mr Joseph Saunders of St. Andrews Holbourn, Gent. October. 28. 1723." in St. Michael, Highgate, in Middlesex, England. [5] [6]

1723 The will of Joseph Saunders was proved on November 2 with administration granted to Mary Saunders, daughter of the deceased, and Edward Leeds Senior, the executors nominated. [7]
