1850 Jacob Bechtel (age 35) and Anna (age 31) lived in Harrison Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana with children John (age 12), Elizabeth (age 10), Abram (age 7), David (age 5), and Barbary A (age 2). [1]

1860 Jacob Buchtel (age 46) and Anna Bachtel (age 45) lived in Harrison Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana with children John (age 23), Abram (age 17), David (age 14), and Barbara A (age 12), Sophia K (age 9), Peter (age 7), Catharine (age 4), and Caroline (age 4 months). [2] [3]

1870 Jacob Bechtel (age 55) and Anna (age 51) lived in Harrison Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana with children David (age 24), Peter (age 17) and daughter Catharine (age 14). [4]

1874 David Bechtel and Sophia Otto were married on June 21, 1874 at Elkhart County, Indiana by Christian S. Farber. [5]

1880 David Bechtel (age 34) and Sophia Bechtel (age 29) lived at Harrison Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana. [6]

1900 David S. Bechtel (age 51) and Sophia A. Bechtel (age 49) lived at Goshen, Elkhart Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana with mother-in-law Polly Ott (age 74). [7]

1910 David S. Bechtel (age 65) and Sofie Bechtel (age 59) lived at Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana. [8]

Research Notes:

1902 Mrs. Paulus and Mrs. Ben Lutz of Elkhart, spent yesterday at the home of David Bechtel. John and Jacob Stoner of Ashland county, Ohio, are visiting at the home of David Bechtel. [9] [10]

1899 A new club was organized last evening at the home of David Bechtel. It is known as th e P. P. G. G. T. club and the object is social enjoyment. progressive pedro will be played during the season and the first game will come off at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brown next Thursday evening The members are Messrs. and Mesdames C. O. Charlton, I. H. Simmons, John Mann, David Bechtel, J. M. Ober, J. W. Replogle, Levi J. Shrock, C. A. Wehmeyer, A. E. Keith, Harry Brown and Louis Shank. [11] [12]

1893 Mr. and Mrs. David Bechtel, on south Seventh street, recently received a letter from Mrs. David Bechtel, of Peabody, Kansas, in which she says she arrived at home all safe and sound. She wished to be remembered to her Goshen friends. [13] [14]

1899 David S. Bechtel left for Peabody, Kan., where he will make an extended visit with friends and relatives. [15] [16]

1907 A newspaper notice reported about a Bechtel family reunion. [17] [18]:

The fourth annual reunion of the Daniel Bechtel family convened at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Slabaugh, of Nappanee, last Saturday. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather a fair representation of the family was present. Many expressions of regret were exchanged in regard to the impossibility of having Mother Bechtel present. It has been through the high esteem in which she is held by the family that these meetings were instituted. She is now passed 86 years of age.

One of the prominent features of the day was the elaborate repast served at the noon hour, the afternoon being devoted to various entertainments. Ofiicers were elected for the-coming year and the place for the next reunion is to be at the home of David Bechtel of Goshen.

Among those present were Jerry Bechtel and family of Wakarusa; Henry Bechtel and family of Harrison township; Mrs. Mary Bechtel, David Bechtel and daughter, Bernice of Goshen; Charles Bechtel and David Brenneman and their families of Wakarusa; Frank Slabaugh and family of Limon, Col.; Henry Nye and wife of Millwood: and Miss Rosa Nye of South Bend.

1906 "Mrs. Peter Nusbaum died yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at her home in Elkhart, aged 76 years. She was an old resident of of Elkhart county, formerly living in Harrison township, but seven years ago removed to Elkhart. She is survived by her husband and five children: Mrs. Martin Overholt of near Kalamazoo, Mich.; Christian and John Nusbaum of Elkhart; Mrs. Henry Bechtel of Harrison township; and George Nusbaum just west of this city. David S. Bechtel of 518 South Seventh street is a nephew. The funeral will be held at the Yellow Creek church Saturday at 11:30 a. m. Interment will be at the same place." [19] [20]

1915 Mr. and Mrs. A. Parshall went to Goshen yesterday to attend the wedding of their son Howard to Miss Bessie Otto which occured at the home of the bride's uncle, David Bechtel at three o 'clock yesterday afternoon.[21] [22]

1917 Mr. and Mrs. Forest Parks have moved here from Lagrange, occupying the David Bechtel house on South Seventh street. Mr. Parks, a nephew of William Lewis of Goshen, is district agent for the Standard Oil Co. [23] [24]

1915 At the home of the bride's aunt Mrs. David S. Bechtel, No. 518 South Seventh street, this afternoon, Miss Bessie Otto, daughter of Mrs. Charles Miller of south of Elkhart and Mr. Howard P. Parshall of Ligonier were united in marriage, Rev C. L. DeBow, pastor of the Ligonier M. E. church officiating. Only members of the families witnessed the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Parshall left for a honeymoon trip to Cleveland and Detroit, They will reside at Ligonier, where Mr. Parshall is cashier of the Citizens bank. [25] [26]

1916 On June 30, Sophia A Bechtel [David's sister or wife?] quitclaimed interest in Harrison township land. [27] [28]

1919 Prof, and Madame L. A. Sage-Dieu, who have been residing at 219 South Third street, have taken posession of their new home at 516 South Seventh street, which they purchased of David S. Bechtel several weeks ago. [29] [30]

1922 An obituary for Elizabeth Nusbaum reported that David S. Bechtel was still alive. [31] [32]:

Mrs. Elizabeth Nusbaum, daughter of Jacob and Anna Bechtel was born in Ashland county, Ohio, July 18, 1840. When 10 years old she went with her parents to Elkhart county, Ind., where she lived until the spring of 1884, when with her husband and family she moved to this county. Some years later she moved to Boise, Idaho, at or near here she lived until the time of her death, Dec. 21, 1922, aged 82 years, 5 months and 4 days. ... Besides the large family of chidren left to mourn her loss, she leaves two sisters, Mrs. Levi Hoover of Peabody, Kansas, Mrs. George Hoover of Los Angeles, Calif . and one brother, David S. Bechtel of Goshen.
