Research Notes:

I haven't found proof that William Baxter and Catharine Downie are the parents of the Agnes Baxter who married John Hart in 1644. The fact that Agnes returned to Edinburgh after her husband's death in 1687 in Ireland and was buried there in 1689 suggests that she had family ties in Edinburgh. There was another Agnes Baxter born in Edinburgh somewhat earlier.

The following records plausibly pertain to the William Downie, perhaps a brother of Catharine, who was one of the witnesses to the baptism of Robert, son of William Baxter and Catharine Downie, in 1620:

1604 William Downie, "son to late William D., of Stirling," was apprenticed to "Robert Crawfurd, hatmaker" on January 10 in Edinburgh. [11]

1619 William Downie was admitted as a burgess of Edinburgh on March 24. "Downie, Wm., B., hatmaker (hagbuit), as p. to Robert Crawfuird, hatmaker, B. (10 Jan. 1604) 24 Mar. 1619." [12]

1620 William Gillespie, "son to late William G., maltman, burgess of Stirling," was apprenticed to "William Downye, hatmaker" on March 22 in Edinburgh. [13]

1627 Catharine, daughter of William Downie and Jonet Wylie, was baptized on August 8 in Edinburgh. "Williame Downie hat-maker Adulterar with Jonet Wylie a d. n. Catharine w Robert Andersone. Wm Baxter." [14]

1636 "Williame Downie hatmaker" and "Catharine Samsoun" were married on "Thursday 1 Decembris 1636" in Edinburgh. [15]
