Notes for Ralph fitz Odo and Matilda

Radulf Filius Odonis: "Son of Odo fitz Ralph, lord of Crick, Derbyshire. By his wife Matilda he left issue a son Hubert (his successor by 1164) and a daughter Blanche, wife of Geoffrey de Costentin. He probably died c. 1143; his widow married secondly Ralph de Aincourt (died by 1154); cf. Foulds, Thurgarton Cart., pp. lviii-ix. Cronne/Davis, RRAN III, no. 180; Foulds, The Thurgarton Cartulary (1994), nos 171, 652; Holdsworth, Rufford Charters, no. 144; Holdsworth, Rufford Charters, no. 145." [1] [2]

1175-1225 "Grant by Hubert Fitz Ralph to Thurgarton with his mother Matilda when she took the religious habit, of the land which William son of Gregory held of him in Scarcliffe." "Matilda was an important lady, for she was the widow of Ralph 2nd baronet Deyncourt. Her first husband had been Ralph Fitz Odo and Hubert was the son of this marriage. She held Scarcliffe and its hamlet of Palterton in dower from the lands of her son and her heir. Thurgarton obtained no more land here as Hubert Fitz Ralph's interests were chiefly with Darley (Augistinian, Derbys.) and his successors the Frechevilles and Stutevilles were far more interested in Newstead." [3]

"Matilda [is] presumed to be the daughter of Ralf fitz Hubert the Domesday tenant in chief" [4]
