1764 A survey was made of several tracts adjacent to the Clydesdale tract near Maugansville in Washington County, Maryland, for Joseph Chapline. John Adam purchased Clydesdale in 1791, and several of the nearby tracts soon after. [1] [Photocopy, Map of Maryland land patents near Clydesdale, Washington County, Maryland.]

1765 John Adams received a patent for a 100 acre addition to "John Adams Delight" in Washington County, Maryland. This tract was on Israel's Creek, north of Sandy Hook, Maryland. [2] [3] The Israel Creek Bridge, built 1875, across Israel Creek is off Route 67 on Valley Road about 1/4 mile southwest of Garretts Mill Road northwest of Weverton, Maryland.

1772 John Adams applied for 125 acres in Bedford Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania on March 1, bounded by the chestnut ridge on the northwest and by the Plum cr Ron on the northeast and by lands of George of James ? on the south and others to include his improvement and two springs. [4]

1778 Jacob Adam, John Adam Jr, and Peter Adam, perhaps sons of John Adam, all took the oath of allegiance in Washington County on Henry Schnebeley's returns. [5] William Adam was listed on John Barnes' return. [6] [7] [8]

1783 John Adam Sr, John Adam Jr, and Philip Adam were named on a tax list for Salisbury & Conococheague Hundreds, Washington County, Maryland. [9] Rudolph Flennerd was also listed with tracts named Fright, Pt. Blunks Doubt, and Pt. Claydestle (see 1790 census).

1785 A descendant of Johannes Flenner reports that Johannes Adam, Jacob Zeller, and Martin Kershner were witnesses to Johannes Flenner's will in Washington County, Maryland.

1785 John Adam applied for three hundred acres of land in Morris[on]'s Cove in Bedford County on April 15, adjoining lands of Philip Kniess and others including the Clover Creek on his own land. Dated (warrant?) April 9, 1792 [10]. John Adam applied for 150 acres in "Morrises Coff" in Bedford County adjoining lands of Andrew Levis and his warrant bought from John Martain including a spring known by the name of the "Dray Spring". [11]

1788 John Adams was taxed as a non-resident for 100 acres in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [12]

1790 John Adam Sr lived in Washington County, Maryland in a household with one male and one female. Adjacent listings were for John Adam Jr and Christian Winebrenner (two listings). Joseph Chapline, the first owner of Clydesdale, which John Adam would purchase in 1791, was listed 7 lines below. Rudolph Flenner was listed three lines down (see 1783 tax list). [13] [14]

1790 John Martin; of Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania; sold, for ten pounds, 50 acres of land in Morrison's Cove, then Frankstown Twp and now Woodberry Twp, to John Adam; farmer of Washington County, Maryland, on December 7. John Martin had warranted the land on December 8, 1774 (executed on May 8, 1792)[15]. In a deed dated 1818, this transaction was described as occurring in 1798 [16].

1791 John Adams purchased part of Clydesdale, adjacent to Albughs Folly, from Joseph Rentch. [17]

1792 John Adams received a warrant for 300 acres of land in Morrison's Cove, Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania on April 9. [18] John Adams received a patent for the tract on February 2, 1802, with 373 acres. [19] [20] [21] John Adams recieved a patent in 1802, for an adjacent tract which was recorded with a warrant for Jacob Niederer. [22]

1792 John Adams received a warrant for two tracts of 150 acres each on April 9. [23] [24] [25] The tracts were separated by a 212 acre tract with a warrant to John Martin, called Martinsburg, in Morrison's Cove, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [26] [27] [28] John Adams received a patent for the two tracts on February 2, 1802. [29] [30] [31] [32] [33]

1792 Jacob Smith and John Adams applied for land in Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, adjoining a path from Henry Painters to Frederick Lerrians on the south west side, including Black Oak Ridge. Dated April 9. [34]

1794 John Adams applied for 200 acres of land in Bedford Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania adjoining land of Solomon Adams and James Marel Esq on the waters of Raystown Branch. Dated July 18. [35]

1794 John Adams applied for 100 acres of land in Bedford Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania at a hickory corner of John Kentons land on the east of the three lick run, adjoining Thomas Smith. Dated August 13. [36]

1796 John Adams, perhaps this one, and Jacob Huffer received a patent for 12 acres named "Hans Town" in Washington County, Maryland. Dated May 11. "Next resurvey of Plunks Doubt, Walnut Bottom". [37] [38]

1798 John Adam, farmer of Washington County, Maryland, purchased land from John Martin, of Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania on December 17. [39] John Martin had received a warrant for the land, which was in Morrison's Cove, dated December 8, 1774 and executed on May 8, 1792. [40] The tract of 51 acres was surveyed on May 8, 1792, showing adjacent lands of John Adams and Conrad Martin. [41] A survey of a several tracts dated April 9, 1792 showed greater detail about the lands of John Adams. [42] A patent was issued to John Adam for the land, called "Woodstock Bower", on February 4, 1802. [43]

1798 John Adams was named on the US direct tax list for Bedford County as owner of several tracts of land. Christian Winebrenner was the occupant of one, and another was listed as unseated (unoccupied and owned by a non-resident). Son John Adams might be among those listed. 1800 John Adam and female (both age 45+) lived in Elizabeth Hundred, Washington County, Maryland. The adjacent listing was for Peter Adam. Jacob Zellers, executor to the 1808 will, was listed on the bottom of the page. [56] [57]

1802 John Adams received a patent for 373 acres of land called Woodstock-bower, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, on February 4. The land had been warranted by John Martin on December 8, 1774 and by John Adam on April 9, 1792. [58] [59] [60] [61]

1802 John Adams received a patent for 440 acres of land called Braintree in Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Patent dated February 4. The land had been warranted by Jacob Neederer on February 28, 1775/76 and by John Adam on April 9, 1792. [62] [63] [64] [65]

1807 John Adams sold six tracts to Jacob Zeller: Calecohahath (granted to John George Arnold on August 17, 1743), Allbrach's Folly (granted to Leonard Albrack on November 1, 1748), Widows Neglect (granted to Peter Rentch on August 26, 1754), Walnut Bottom (purchased from Jacob Bowman on May 26, 1770), Clydesdale (purchased from Joseph, John, and Andrew Rench on June 18, 1791), and Hans Town (granted to John Adams on May 11, 1796). Deed dated March 17. [66]

1807 John Adam leased land in Washington County, Maryland from Jacob Zeller, "being part of the plantation the said John Adam sold to the said Jacob Zeller, on which lot … there is a small log dwelling house, a small table, garden, & a part of said lot in clover and lies to the north east of the house stable and garden, the house was formerly known by Peter Adams house and is now in the possession of Peter Becker and the said lot of ground encloses the beginning tree of land called callies hahalt the said lot … about one acre of land … from the first day of April next … until the full end and term of the natural life of the said John Adam … paying … to Jacob Zeller yearly … rent of one cent current money …" Deed dated March 17. 1807 John Adams purchased many items from Edward Heath. [68]

1807-08 John Adam wrote his will [69]. The will was cited in subsequent deeds [70] [71].

In the name of God Amen. I John Adam of Washington County and state of Maryland being in perfect health body and of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding and considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say. First and principally I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors herein after named and after my final debts and funeral charges are paid I desire and bequeath as follows: 1st I give and bequeath to my son Peter and his heirs the sum of twelve hundred and fifty pounds current money. 2nd I give and bequeath to my grand children, heirs of my son John, to each of the boys the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds current money and to Mary the daughter of John Adam, deceased, the sum of two hundred and thirty pounds current money. 3rd I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary her heirs and assigns forever three hundred and seventy two (372) acres of land lying and being in Morrison's Cove, Pennsylvania, where she at present resides and I give and bequeath to her husband Christian Winebrenner and his heirs begotten by his wife Mary the sum of one hundred fifty pounds current money. 4th I give and bequeath to my son William his heirs and assigns forever four hundred (400) acres of land lying in Bedford County and state of Pennsylvania being the same whereon he at present resides. It is my will and desire that my son Peter his heirs and assigns shall have seven hundred pounds current money out of the first money that may come to hand, deducting what I have already paid for him out of the first payment of land sold to Jacob Zellar. It is further my will and desire that the heirs of my son John shall be paid in equal proportions out of the money that may become due from Jacob Zellar, next to my son Peter, and the other legacies to be equally distributed out of any monies as they become due. I also give and bequeath to my grand son John Adam, son of William, the sum of Forty pounds current money to be paid him out of any unappropriated money when he arrives at lawful age, and should there be anything remaining after the aforegoing legacies are paid it is my will that the balance be equally divided among all my children and the legal representatives of such as are dead or may die. And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my friends Jacob Zellar and Henry Adam sole executors of this my last will and testament revoking and anulling all former wills by me heretofore made … In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirtyeth day of June in the year eighteen hundred and seven. John Adam. Witnessed by: David Middlekauf, Jacob Binkley, Christian Feightig (in German). Proved January 23, 1808.

1808 Letters of administration were issued to Henry Adam [perhaps a grandson through deceased son John] on January 23. He posted bond with Jacob Zellar and Jacob Binkley of Washington County. [72]

1808 The inventory of the estate of John Adam was recorded on April 28. [73]

1808 The Washington County, Maryland Orphans' Court ordered Henry Adam, executor of the estate of John Adam, to sell at public auction the personal estate of John Adams, with notice in the newspapers at Hagerstown of the sale. Dated February 9. The adjacent listing named Jacob Zeller guardian of Dan'l Reuch [Rentch?]. [74]

1808 The estate sale of John Adam was held at Hagerstown on February 25. Peter Adam, Jacob Binkley, Henry Adam, Jacob Zellers, and Christian Winebrenner (all of whom are named elsewhere in these notes), among others, purchased items. [75]

1808 Several items were posted in the Maryland Herald and Elizabeth-Town Weekly Advertiser of Hagerstown, Maryland by Henry Adam regarding his pottery business and the estate of John Adam. [76] Henry Adam, executor of John Adam, is plausibly the same person as Henry Adam, potter, of Hagerstown. That same Henry Adam is plausibly one of the grandsons, son of deceased son John Adam, named in will of John Adam dated 1808:

1809 Henry Adams gave the first account of the estate of John Adams to the Washington County, Maryland Orphans Court. Account dated April 13. The account reported money received of Winebrenner and of Jacob Geller [Zeller?] and reported debts due to several persons. [78]

1809 Henry Adams gave the second account of the estate of John Adams to the Washington County, Maryland Orphans' Court. Account dated September 27. The account reported money received of Jacob Zeller and of Philip Rennon. Balance of £2785.5.7. [79]

1810 Henry Adams made a second account of the estate of John Adams to the Washington County, Maryland Orphans' Court, on October 3. The account reported money received of Jacob Zeller for lands sold and of Philip Rennon. Balance of £2785.5.7. [80]

1812 Son William Adams and his wife Gertrout of Woodbury Twp sold 17 acres of land on Clover Creek in Morrison's Cove, Woodbury Twp, Bedford County to Conrad Nicodemus for ten dollars. The land had been granted to John Adams late of Washington County, Maryland, father of William Adams. The land originally had two warrants, one granted to Jacob Niederer in February 1776 and sold to John Adams on December 22, 1798 and the other warrant dated April 9, 1792 to John Adams. John Adams received a patent for the land on February 8, 1802 [81]. [82]

1810-16 Henry Adam gave an account of the estate of John Adam, dated October 3, in Washington County, Maryland. The account mentioned land sold to Jacob Zeller, with a total estate value of £2785.5.7½. The Will was administered by Henry Adam on October 3, 1810. It was dispersed such: Peter £1250.0.0; deduct advance £310.9.6; Henry, Jacob, John, Christian each £250.0.0; Mary £230.0.0; Christian Winebrenner £150.0.0; John, son of William £40.0.0; balance £425.15.1½ to 4 heirs from the total estate value of £2785.5.7½. [83] [84] The will of John Adam made bequests to several grand children, so the names of children and grand children could be interspersed in this distribution list.

1815 A law was passed in Maryland allowing John Adams of Washington County, Maryland, perhaps this one after his death, or his son, to have land rights, even though he was not naturalized in the United States [85].

Chapter 27. Passed Dec. 30, 1815. Title vested. Proviso Deeds &c. An act for the relief of John Adams, of Washington County Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That, the title to the real property of him, the said John Adams, heretofore intended to be vested in him the said John Adams, his heirs or assigns, by deed purchase or otherwise fairly obtained, be and the same is hereby as amply and fully vested in him the said John Adams and his heirs, to all intents and purposes, as would have been if he had been duly naturalized agreeably to the laws of the United States; Provided, nothing in this act shall in any manner defeat or be construed to defeat any right title or claim to said property, or any part thereof, acquired by any person or persons whatever before the passage of this act. 2. And be it enacted, That all deeds conveyance grants or assurances for passing or transferring any real property made to and by the said John Adams, before he became naturalized agreeably to the laws of the United States, be and the same are hereby made valid and effectual to every intent and purpose whatsoever, and that the title or interest in the said real property intended to be conveyed thereby, shall be as good and available in law as if the said deeds, conveyances grants or assurances had been made and executed since the said John Adams hath become a naturalized citizen agreeably to the laws of the United States.

1747 Johannes Adam arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Two Brothers, with Captain Thomas Arnott on October 13. [86] [87]

1753/54 Johann Jacob Adam and wife Anna Kummerlin emigrated from Wuerttemberg to Berks County, Pennsylvania. [88]

1810 Andrew Adam (age 26-44), relationship unknown, lived in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. George and Christian Binkley were listed on the same page of the census. [89]

Several researchers incorrectly suggest that John Adam, son of Heinrich Adam and Regina Woolf, born 1727, might be this John Adam. However, John Adam, born 1727, died young in 1729, in Germany:

1701 Christoph Adam and Anna Barbara Adam were married on April 10 at The Evangelical Church in Landau, Pfalz, Germany. Christoph was a son of Johannes Valentin Adam and Anna Margretha Feyrbach. Anna Barbara was a daughter of Johann Peter Mueller.

1702 Johan Henrich, son of Johann Christoph Adam and Anna Barbara Muellerin, was born on April 7. He was baptized on April 10 at The Evangelical Church in Landau, Pfalz, Germany. [90]

1725 Johann Heinrich Adam and Anna Regina Wolff were married on May 6, at The Evangelical Church in Landau, Pfalz, Germany. Johann Heinrich Adam was a son of Christoph Adam and wife Anna Barbara Adam. Anna Regina was a daughter of Joh. Peter Wolff and Anna Maria Wolff. [91]

1727 Johannes Adam, son of Heinrich Adam, burger and Metz yeor and wife ? Regina gebohrne Wolffin, was born on June 4. Sponsors were Johannes Adam das burger und Metzger villfier? und frau Sophia Cleoghe Adamin, hosefrau ? [92]

1729 Johannes Adam, son of Henrich Adam and Regina Wolffin, was buried on December 20 at Landau, Bayern, Germany. [93]

1756 Georg Jacob Adam, and Anna Rossina Fuerbach were married on October 19. Georg Johann was a son of Johann Heinrich Adam and Maria Regina Wolff. Anna was a daughter of Johann Theobald Fuerbach and Anna Sybilla Brueck. [94]

1780 Johan Heinrich Adam, son of Johann Christoph Adam and Anna Barbara Muellerin and spouse of Maria Regina, was buried on January 12 at Landau. [95]

Research Notes:

We are researching John Adams, who died in 1808 in Washington County, Maryland, and who named in his will, daughter Mary, wife of Christian Winebrenner. There were other men named John Adams in the area at this time, whose land transactions are shown below.

1727 John Adams was born. One report gives the birthplace as Germany (FHL Batch Number: F877008, Sheet: 039, Source Call No.: 1396376, no documentation seen). Other researchers have reported his birth in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

There were several land transactions involving John Adams in Washington County prior to the death of our John Adams. Wives named in the deeds include Elinor Worland and Rebecca. John married to Rebecca made land transaction after the death of our John. We have assembled the notes for all of these men named John Adams here, in order to help organize them.

1801 John Adams [husband of Elenor Worland] purchased a negro boy from Worland Winifred. [96]

1803 John Adams [husband of Rebecca] bought Martins Nest from James Burk. [97]

1804 John Adams [husband of Rebecca] sold Tarryfrin? enlarged and Martin's Nest to Elijah Redman. Rebecca Adams, wife of John released her right of dower. [98]

1805 John Adams [husband of Elenor Worland] purchased shares of the estate of John Worland, who dated his will 8 January 1790, from heirs John and James Worland. Other heirs were named, including Rebecca. [99]

1805 John Adams [husband of Rebecca] purchased Maple Level from John Rose. [100]

1807 John Adams and his wife Elenor Adams and Anastatia Worland sold land called Sly Fox, from the estate of John Worland, father of Elenor and Anastatia. John Adam married Elenor Worland after the death of her father. The land was sold to Job McNamee. [101]

1807 James and wife Margaret and Peter Adams sold three tracts to John Adams in Washington County. One tract was called Edwards Luck. [102]

1809 John Adams and Rebecca his wife sold Maple Level to Jacob Bassinger in exchange for the share that Jacob inherited, through his wife, from John Garlaugh, deceased. John Adams appeared on 30 August 1809. [103]

1786 John Adams Sr purchased two cows from Jacob Brener in Washington County, Maryland. [104]

1852 Was Jacob Adams (1782-1852) related? Jacob Adams died in Beaver Creek, Washington County, Maryland on May 26. His children were named in an estate distribution. [105]
