Notes for William Malet and Helise Crispen de Brionne

William Malet participated in the battle of Hastings. Contemporary chronicler William of Poitiers wrote that King Harold's corpse was brought into the Duke's camp and William gave it for burial to William, surnamed Malet, and not to Harold's mother, who offered for the body of her beloved son its weight in gold.

William had married Helise Crispin de Brionne, a great-grand daughter of Rollo, 1st Duke of Normandy. Their son Robert succeeded William as Lord of Eye and Sheriff of Suffolk. His other son Gilbert founded the Malets of Shepton Mallet.
