Notes for James R. Lovett and Sarah Chipman

1880 Obituary of Sarah Chipman Lovett. This newspaper story [from Daniel F. Johnson, Vital Statistics from Newspapers, Volume 53 Number 23, September 25, 1880, Saint John Globe] partially confuses Sarah's great great grandfather John Chipman with his father-in-law John Howland: "Kentville, N.S. 'Chronicle' - In our issue of Sept. 8th, notice was given of the demise of Mrs. Sarah Lovett of this place. Her great-great grandfather, John Chipman, came from Dorchestershire, England in the reign of James 1st A.D. 1620, he being one of many who left England on account of religious persecution. He was one of the little band of Puritans who first landed on Plymouth Rock, New England. Her great grandfather John Chipman was Coroner of the County of Barnstable and officer of Militia and Representative of the General Assembly. He removed to Martha's Vineyard where he was Justice of the Peace and Judge of the Court. He afterward removed to Newport, R.I. where he was the first of the assistants of Council and Chief Justice of the Superior Court or Court of Equity. Her grandfather, Handley Chipman came from Newport, R.I. to Nova Scotia in A.D. 1761. He was one of the 66 persons who held a grant from the Crown of the district made immortal by Longfellow's Evangeline and now known as Kings Co. He was Judge of Probate after coming to this country. Her father, William Allen Chipman was a merchant, Justice of the Peace, Judge of the Court and General Sessions, was ellected a member of the House of Assembly in 1799. Remained in the House 22 years and was afterwards re-elected in 1826. He was the largest landowner in the County of Kings. Her husband was James R. Lovett of Annapolis, member of the House of Assembly."
