1218 Fine Roll C 60/9, 2 Henry III (28 October 1217-27 October 1218), membrane 4,147, 3 July. Tower of London. Suffolk. Elias Gubbe gives the king the fourth part of 20 m. for doing justice against Roger de Cressy to render to him chattels to the value of 20 m. He has the writ. Order to the sheriff of Suffolk to take security from Elias for the fourth part of this debt from the first monies for this writ. Witness the earl. [1]

1224 Fine Roll C 60/21, 8 Henry III (28 October 1223-27 October 1224), membrane 4, 288, 1 Aug. Bedford. Norfolk. Order to the sheriff of Norfolk to place in respite, until upon his next account at the Exchequer after Michaelmas in the eighth year, the demand he makes from Roger de Cressy by summons of the Exchequer for the scutage of Poitou. [2]

1230/1 Fine Roll C 60/30, 15 Henry III (28 October 1230-27 October 1231), membrane 7, 96, 7 January, For Roger de Cressy. The king has taken the homage of Roger de Cressy for the lands that Margaret de Cressy, his mother, whose heir he is, held of the king in chief. Order to the sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk to cause him to have full seisin of all lands formerly of Margaret in his bailiwick, of which she was seised on the day she died. Further order to cause diligent inquiry to be taken by the oath of trustworthy and law-worthy men of his county whether Margaret held the aforesaid land in chief as of the crown and in the name of barony, or as of escheat, and he is to send etc. the inquisition etc. Memorandum that, the inquisition having been taken, it is clear to the king that Roger owes him his relief for eleven knights' fees. [This memorandum must have been added later as it follows the witness clause.] [3]

1237-1238 Fine Roll E 371/5, 22 Henry III (28 October 1237-27 October 1238), membrane1, 73, [No date]. Lincolnshire. S', in the Roll. The king has taken the homage of Sibyl, daughter and heiress of John of Bratoft, wife of Roger de Cressy, for the lands which John held of the king in chief in Surfleet in Lincolnshire. Order to Roger of Essex, escheator, to take security for 40s. to the king's use for her relief. [4]

1241 Fine Roll C 60/37, 25 Henry III (28 October 1240-27 October 1241), membrane 5, 580, [No date but between entries dated 27 July]. Lincolnshire. Roger de Cressy and Sibyl, his wife, give 2 m. for having four justices. Order to the sheriff of Lincolnshire etc. [5]

1242 Fine Roll C 60/38, 26 Henry III (28 October 1241-6 May 1242), membrane 4, 296, 26 April, For Roger de Cressy. Roger de Cressy gives the king 100s. for the trespass alleged against him of taking his wife without the king's will, saving to the king his claim upon the same if he will wish to prosecute him. Order to the sheriff of Lincolnshire to cause him to have seisin of all lands formerly of his wife that have been taken into the king's hand for the aforesaid reason. If he has taken anything from the aforesaid lands, he is to cause it to returned to him. [S', in the Roll] [6]

Goseberchirche. 3s. and 15d. rent held of the earl of Rich(mond); and 8½a. meadow and 8s. rent of assize held of the fee of the bishop.
Braytoft. A messuage and 1 carucate land, 1 bovate land in villenage, and 21s. 8d. rent of freemen, held of Gilbert de Gaunt by knight's service.
Gonneby. 10a. land and a windmill, held of William son of Henry de Braytoft by a knife (knyvettum) or ½d. yearly.
Burgh by Waynflet. 36a. meadow in demesne, held of Emery de Rupa Cawardi and Maud de Kyme his wife by 12d. and a pair of gilt spurs yearly; and 20a. land and 30a. meadow held of the heirs of Thomas de Longeton, rendering 12d. yearly.
Great Stepinge. 10a. land held of Robert Attebigg', rendering 9d. yearly.
Ireby. 16a. pasture held of the earl of Lincoln by knight's service.
Friseby. 1 bovate land and 16a. meadow held of Gilbert de Gaunt by knight's service.
Waynflet. 1 toft and 1 salt pit held of John de Barwe for 19½d. yearly.
Pincebek. 4a. meadow, and pasture for 36 sheep of the fee of the abbot of Aungers, rendering 22d. yearly.
Obthorp. 5 bovates land held of Gilbert de Gaunt by knight's service.
Claypol. 24s. rent of assize and the homage and service of ½ knight's fee of Richard de Howell, held of William Bardulf' by knight's service.
Tonenton. A toft and a free spade (bescam) for digging in the marsh of Tonenton and Bolingbrog, held of the earl of Lincoln for a pair of white spurs.
Alforde. 4s. rent of assize held of William de Wells, rendering 3s. yearly.
William de Cressy her son, aged 36, is her heir. [7]

Research Notes:

1175/76 On January 25, Henry II "held a great council, on the statutes of his realm, and in the presence of the king, his son, and of the archbishops, bishops, earls, and barons of his realm, by the common consent of all, divided his kingdom into six parts, to each of which he appointed three justices itinerant." Hugh de Cressy, Walter Fitz-Robert, and Robert Mantel were appointed justices itinerant for Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Huntindonshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, and Hertfordshire. 1186-1189 Hugh de Cressi granted Blythburgh Priory a rent of one mark in Walberswick. [10]

Sciant omnes tam presentes quam futuri quod (ego) Hugo de Cressi dedi et concessi deo et ecclesie sancte Marie de Blybur et canonicis ibidem deo servietibus in puram et liberam et perpetuam elemosinam unam marcatam redditus in Walberiswyk pro salute domini regis Henrici filii Matildis imperatricis et Willelmi fratris sui et patris mei Rogeri et matris mee Eustacie et pro salute anime mee et antecessorum meorum. Hiis testibus Waltero Rotmagensi, Balewino Cantuariensi archiepiscopis, Hugone Lincolnienci episcopo, Huberto Eboracensi decano, Willelmo comite Arond(el).
Date: Hugh of Avalon was consecrated bishop of Lincoln in September 1186. Hugh de Cressi was dead by Michaelmas 1189.
