Notes for Robert Dennis and Sarah Howland

We are researching Charles Dennis (1651-1698) of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey [1]. We suspect this Robert Dennis, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, was related to, perhaps a brother of, our Charles Dennis, and perhaps of Samuel Dennis (1650-1723), also of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey. The birthdate of this Robert Dennis has been reported both as 1630 and as 1647, allowing for either a parental or a brotherly relationship to the Monmouth Dennis families. We have notes for the family of Samuel Dennis [2], and we follow the descendants of Charles Dennis.

We welcome further information about the relationship, if any, among Robert Dennis of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and Charles and Samuel Dennis, who settled in Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey. We also seek documentation about John Dennis, named in the 1691 will of Robert Dennis and in the 1688 will of Thomas Eaton in Monmouth County, New Jersey, as summarized in the notes below.

1630 Robert Dennis, born about 1631, died at Portsmouth on 5 4m [June] 1691, aged "about 60 years." [3]. Other researchers have reported a birth year, apparently erroneous, circa 1647.

1651 Robert Dennis was received as an inhabitant of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Dated June 16. [4] [5]

1656 Job Hawkins and his mother Jane, widow of Richard, of Boston conveyed to "Robert Dennis of Portsmouth on Road Iland Planter", 20 acres in Portsmouth bounded by land of William Wodell, William Brenton, the sea, and the highway. Dated August 25. [6] [7] [8] [9]

1667 Robert Dennis was chosen to be one of the petty jurymen at a meeting of the "free inhabitants of the town" of Portsmouth. Dated October 17. [10] [11]

1671 Robert Dennis was a freeman in Portsmouth. [12] [13]

1671 Richard Borden was buried in "the burying place that Robert Dennis gave Friends in Portsmouth," Rhode Island. [14]

1672 Portsmouth town Meeting minutes, dated April 25, reported: "Whereas this Town stands Indicted in the General Court of Tryalls for the deficency of the Bridge on the Common near George Lawton's house: The Towne Conceive that Bridge is Occasioned by the said George Lawton makeing a damm there: and therefor doe conceive he Ought to Maintain the said Bridge: Therefor the Towne doe Order that two men be chosen by the Towne to go to the said George Lawton and in the Townes behalf desire him to make the said Bridge Sufficient, or otherwise leave the highway in the like Condition it was before he made that damm." The persons chosen were Robert Dennis and Serjant Jacob Mott. They were sent again after George Lawton gave an unsatisfactory response. [15] [16] [17]

1672 In July, Robert Dennis deeded land to Matthew and John Borden and others for a Quaker burying place. [18] [19] In his words "for the love I bear the truth and the people of God which in scorn are called Quakers". [20]

1672 Robert Dennis married Sarah, daughter of Henry and Mary (Newland) Howland of Duxbury, Massachusetts, on November 19, "att the house of Joshua Coggeshall of Portsmouth before the people of God". [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26]

1673-84 Robert Dennis "was active in civic affairs as deputy to the Rhode Island General Assembly, member of the town council, juryman, and member of various committees". [27]

Stepson ("my Son-in-law") Joseph Wing received a tract of 100 acres in Monmouth County. "friend" John Dennis, son of Robert Dennis, "living at Portsmouth on Rhoad Island" received rights to undivided land in the Town of Dartmouth, New England [then on the disputed border between Massachusetts and Rhode Island], lying and being upon a neck there commonly called Norkint Neck and Cedar Island. Research Notes:

The Allen families of Shrewsbury New Jersey had links to Newport, Rhode Island and Barnstable. The relationship of Jedediah Allen and Judah Allen was reviewed by Don Armstrong [60].

1700 Sept. 18. Mortgage. Judah Allen of Freehold, E[ast] J[ersey], cooper, to William Allen of Newport, R. I., cordwainer, on a plantation of 500 acres on the Southside of Rancokus River. [61]

1700 Sept. 17. Deed. William Allen of Newport, R. I., cordwainer, to Judah Allen of Freehold, East Jersey, cooper, for a plantation of 500 acres on the Southside of Rancokus Creek, of which 200 acres were bought by Noel Mew of Rhode Island, merchant, of Henry Jacobs of near Burlington August 8, 1685, and 300 acres bought by said Mew of John Roberts of Pensoakin August ip, 1685 (see Liber A, p. 148, and B, p. ill); bought by present grantor of said Mew April 12, 1686. [62]

Brothers Ephraim, Judah, Daniel, and George Allen, all sons of George Allen of Sandwich, Barnstable County, Plymouth (Massachusetts) were named in a 1687 deed in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The deed describes land adjacent to land of Jedediah Allen, but Jedediah was not named as a brother. [63] The brothers were sons of George Allen [64] of Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. George Allen subsequently sold the land to Nicholas Brown. [65]

1691 On 23 day, 4th month, the inventory of Robert Dennis, who deceased 5 day, 4th month (June), 1691 was made by Peleg Tripp, Thomas Cornell, and John Anthony: £150.2.10. [Jane Fletcher Fiske, "The Portsmouth Scrapbook," Rhode Island Roots 9 (1983), 33-36, at 35]

There were several Dennis lines that lived in New Jersey about this time. In addition to the Dennis family of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, which is of interest to us, there was another Dennis family of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The relationship between them, if any, is uncertain. We have found no evidence to support a relationship between these two Dennis lines, and we show them as different families.

One source [66] provides evidence that the Dennis families in Shrewsbury and Woodbridge are two different Dennis lines: "The Dennis family of [Shrewsbury] New Jersey are principally descendants of Robert Dennis, an early settler of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, who according to the Connecticut records was at Portsmouth in 1645. This Robert Dennis purchased land in Monmouth County, New Jersey, in 1691, of his brother-in-law, Jebediah Allen, and an effort has been made to identiy him or his son Robert with Robert Dennis, one of the first patentees of Woodbridge, May 21, 1666, but this seems to be contradicted by the fact that Robert Dennis of Portsmouth died there in 1691. Robert Dennis of Woodbridge came from Wymouth, Mass., and was granted land at Woodbridge by Philip Carteret, and was one of the associates of the Woodbridge patent."

Robert Dennis [68] of Massachusetts, died in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. See, also, our research notes for Samuel Dennis [69] of Woodbridge.

Samuel and John Dennis, relationship unknown, settled in Gloucester county. Our notes for them are at the end of our notes for Samuel Dennis of Woodbridge.

However, William S. Hornor, in This Old Monmouth of Ours, reports the following [70] with no sources and perhaps with errors:

Robert Dennis (1), Master of the good ship "True Love," landed with his family at Tiverton, R.I., in 1635. He removed to Yarmouth, Mass. where he was prominent following the trade of carpenter. In 1668 he removed to Woodbridge, N.J., being one of the original "Associates" in the settlement of that place. He is said to have died in September 1697-8. … The given name of his wife was Mary. Their children were: Robert (2); Jonathan (3); Mary (3½), born 9-19-1649; Joseph (4), removed to Cohansey, N.J.; Elizabeth (5), married Thomas Bloomfield; John (6); Samuel (7); and, it is claimed, Thomnas (7½).

Robert Dennis (2), son of Robert (1), was of Portsmouth, R.I., where he died in 1691. He did not come to New Jersey, although two of his sons, Samuel (8), and Charles (9), did. … His wife was Sarah, daughter of Henry and Sarah (Newland) Howland. She was born 1645 and died Oct 2, 1712. Sarah may have been a second wife.

Charles Dennis (9), son of Robert (2), died in Shrewsbury in 1698. The given name of his wife was Mary. Their children were: John (37); Joseph (38); and Philip (39). …

Robert Dennis, Captain of the Truelove, was active in sailing 1635-1650, so he must be a different Robert Dennis:

1635 Robert Dennis was "master" of the ship "Truelove" of London. It left Graveshead, England on June 10, 1635. The ship was bound for the Bermudas or Somer Islands. "The underwritten names are to be transported to the Bormoodes or Somer Islands, imbarqued in the Truelove, de London, Robert Dennis Mr. being examined by the Minister of Graveshead, concerning their conformitie to the orders and discipline of the Church of England, as it now stands established, and took the oath of allegiance." [71]

1650 Captain Robert Dennis of Great Britain was one of five commissioners appointed to put a stop to illicit trade with the Dutch. [72] [73]
