Notes for Thomas Revell and Alice Dowman

1449 On 24 October, "Thomas Revell, late of Higham, Derbyshire, 'yoman' for not appearing before the same to answer John Byron, knight, touching a debt of £20. Middlesex" [1]

Thomas Revell married Alice Dowman [Dowham or Doman], daughter of Thomas Dowman of Higham, at Derby and had at least four sons, as listed here, the first of whom was born not later than ~1450. [2] [3] [4] [5]

1468 June 24 "8 Edward IV. St. John Bapt. (Fine No 3). William Bate, Esq., and Alice, his wife, grant to Thomas Revell 31 acres of land, 30 acres of meadow, 40 acres of pasture, and 20 acres of wood in Thathwaite, Chesterfield, Brampton, Brimington, Tapton, Witenton, Newbold, and Boythorpe." [6]

1468 "8 Edward IV. William Bate, and Alice, his wife, fined with Thomas Revel, concerning land in Newbold" [7].

1474 Thomas Revell of Higham dated his will April 2 at Shirland. He left 100 marks for the endowment of a chantry at Shirland church. "Thos. Revell of Hygham by wyll ij Aprill A.D. MCCCC Ixx iiij bequethed C marks for the byenge of lands for a prests wags to synge and saye masse perpetuallye for his soule, etc." [8] [9] [10]

1476 "Attorney from Henry son and heir of Thomas Eueryngham of Staynburgh, co York, esquire, to Thomas Revell, to receive seisin of all the lands in Calvore and Bramelegh which his father had jointly with John [Talbot], Earl of Shrewsbury, and John, his son and heir, of the feoffment of Robert Staforthe of Ayone [Eyam] etc." [11] This suggests that the father of Thomas Revell had owned land in Calvore and Bramelegh in Derbyshire.

1477 Thomas of Higham's four sons were recorded as copyholders of the Manor of Temple Normanton in 1477 and there are records of their business dealings / fines in the period 1474 to 1497. These include references to lead mining and smelting and refer to Ashover and Chesterfield in Derbyshire. [12]

c1479 On 8 Edward IV, William Bate and wife Alice granted 31 acres to Thomas Revell. [13]

1484 Hugh Revell, son and heir of Thomas Revell was involved in a court case versus Ralph Longford, John Parker, and John Cam concerning the use of Castelen Place, Norton, sold by Robert Castelen to the said Thomas Revell, now deceased. Dated 3 May 1484 on the back of the case. [14] [15]

1488[/89?] Thomas Revell "serjeaunt of lawe" was named in the Foundation Charter of the Chantry at the Church of St. Helen at North Wingfield, Derbyshire, dated 4 February 1488[/89?]. "Henry VII. gave license to John Babyngton, Knight, and Rauf Savage to found a perpetual chantry of one secular priest, to be called 'the chauntrie of blessed Marie Virgyn in the chirch of Seynt Elyn of Nortlrwynfeld.' [16]

Research Notes:

1509 Who is Thomas Revell of Buxton?: "Grant from Thomas Mathewe of Buxstonys, yeoman, and Alice, his wife, one of the daughters and heirs of Owin Coterell, late of the same, and Margery Coterell of the same, " singlewoman,"' the other of the daughters and heirs of the said Owin, to Antony Lowe of Aldyrwasle [Alderwaslee], gent., of a messuage and lands in Buxstonys. Different researchers reach different conclusions about the ancestry of this Thomas Revell of Higham. The ancestry is uncertain. The research is summarized at the Rotherham website:Website for Rotherham Revell research. It is plausible that Thomas is a descendant of William Revell, son or grandson of Simon Revell [20].

Mike Clifford, Sue Dauris and Moira Hyde summarize some ambiguities about Thomas' ancestry [21]. Stanely Taylor recounts the ancestry of this Thomas as son of John, son of Simon, son of William [22]. Gladwyn Turbutt reports Thomas as son of William of Kent who was son or grandson of Simon, son of William, son of Hugh, son of Robert, son of Henry. [23], which is similar to a family pedigree [24].

The Derbyshire visitations of 1569 and 1611 reports that Thomas Revell, son of Simon, married Alice Dowman, in Derbyshire. The same pedigree reports that Simon Revell was the third son of Sir William Revell of county Warwick. [25] [26]
