1351 John Payn witnessed a charter in Shaftesbury. [1]

Shaftesbury Charter 4. Edw. Nichole grants to John Tonprest' a messuage, next a tenement, late Ph. le Wife's; also two cottages next tenement late John Witemersh's in Pallyngeslane, all in S. Laurence's parish. Witnesses John Payn, John Haselmer', Nich. H'dyng, John Ailron. At Shaftesbury, Friday after Pentecost, 25 Edw. III.

1352 John Payn's tenement in Shaftesbury was mentioned in a charter on March 25. [2]

Shaftesbury Charter 5. Nich. Hardyng of Shaftesbury grants to John H., his brother, a messuage, (legacy from his father Wm. H), next Goldhulle, betw. tenements of Sir Wm. Haytement, Rector of S. Peter's, and of John Payn, on one side, and tenement of Thos. Virgo, on the other, in S. Peter's parish. Witnesses Walt, de Hanlegh, John de Wyke, Robt. de ffouente, John Payn, Thos. Virgo, John de Haselmere, Mayor, Walt. Bron, K.'s Bailiff, Nich. Thomere and Rd. Kynemere, Constables. At Shaftesbury, Sunday in feast of Annunciation, 26 Edw. III.

1352 John Payn and others were fined for the assize of beer at the court of the King's Manor in Shaftesbury. [3]

The following quotation, taken from B. 7., 1352, will shew the style in which the rolls are kept.
"Assi'vis. Ball's ps qd Johns Payn, iijd., Reginalds Virgo, iijd., Willus Sauage, iijd.; Alicia Douce, iijd., frynyana Halewell, iijd., Johes Ryde, vd., Johs le Hog, yjd., Johns le Warin, ixd., Johns ffrome, iijd., Rob'us le houpe, vjd., Johs le hay, iijd., Walts Gille, iijd., Johs Gore, iijd., Alicia Knotte, iijd., Johns Godefray, iijd., Lucas Brockes, iijd., Stephus Churppenhm, iijd., Thomas Virgo, iijd., Agnes Wroghte, iijd., & fr. assm. Id. in m. Sm vjs."
That is, the Bailiff presented these persons for breaking the assize, probably of beer, "fregeruntassisam. Ideo in misericordia," and they were fined the sums placed after their names.

1355 John Payn quitclaimed his right in his tenement next to St Peters Church in Shaftesbury. [4]

Shaftesbury Charter 6. John Payn quitclaims to Thos. Hogyn, Alice his wife, and Reginald their son, all right in his tenement, betw. tenement of Alan de Caneford and S. Peter's Church, of which the said Thos., &c, are tenants for life. Witnesses Walt, de Hanlegh, John de Wike, John Haselmere, John Pyion, Nich. Hardyng, Robt. de ffouente, Mayor, John Harding, K.'s Bailiff. At Shaftesbury, Sunday after Nat. B.V.M., 29 Edw. III. [13 September 1355, the feast of the nativity of Virgin Mary, September 8, was on a Tuesday]

1360 John Payn and Joan his wife were the executors of the will of John Istmond of Shaftesbury. [5]

Thomer, all right in a tenement, betw. tenement of Alan deCaneforde and S. Peter's Church, which he had by their grant. Witnesses Thos. Virgo, Mayor, Robt. Le Degher, K.'s Bailiff, John Wyke, Wm. Arondel, John Pyion, Nich. Hardyng, Robt. de ffouente, John de Haselmer', Walt. Bron. At Schaftesbury, Friday after S. Barnabas' Day, 34 Edw. III. [12 June 1360, the feast of Saint Barnabas, June 11, was a Thursday]

Research Notes:

c1300-1325 Petitioner John Payn of Wimborne St Giles, Dorset, addressed the King and council. (Wimborne St Giles is about 16 miles SE of Shaftesbury.) [6]

Payn requests grace and remedy as his father enfeoffed the Couchefords with lands in Hupwynburn and he was next heir, but the Laibroks ousted them by force and arms, and enfeoffed Mautravers, and Payn lost his suit of novel disseisin as he was driven into Gloucestershire for fear of Mautravers.
