Research Notes:

The notes above are for George Wise who lived in North Middleton, born c 1774. We show him as a son of Jacob Wise of South Middleton. Jacob Wise of South Middleton transferred land to son George Wise of North Middleton. Jacob Wise of Middleton was executor for Paul Swanger's estate in 1806. [34] This George Wise has been named by some researchers as the spouse of Magdaline Swonger and as a son of Jacob Wise and Ann Bushy of Allen Twp. [35]

Who was nephew Levi Zeigler? The relationships suggest that Mary Zeigler, mother of Levi Zeigler, may have been a sister of George Wise. Or was George's wife a Zeigler?

The 1846/48 notes suggest this George was married, secondly, to Eleanor. Eleanor Zeigler, daughter of Abraham, was younger and died unmarried.

George Wise, spouse of Magdaline Swonger, has been name as a son of Jacob Wise and Ann Bushy. The same source states that Jacob Wise, spouse of Ann Bushy, was born in Germany, which appears to be incorrect, based on the documentation that we have found. Because of this apparently incorrect statement about a birth in Germany, we suspect that the writer had no first hand knowledge about this family. The circumstantial evidence that we cite above linking this George Wise to Jacob Wise and Anna Maria Haffner suggests to us that they were his parents, rather than Jacob Wise and Ann Bushy. However, there are several uncertainties about several men named George Wise, and we seek further evidence about these relationships. [36]

We have gathered notes for several men named George Weise who lived in Cumberland County during this era. We are not certain about some of their parents, and their records might be confused here.

We have matched the following:

We show this George Wise (1776-1857) of North Middleton as a son of Jacob (1745-1830) and Anna Marie Haffner of South Middleton, because of the bequest that Jacob Wise of South Middleton made, in his 1824 will, to George Wise of North Middleton.

Deeds dated 1825 and 1839 suggest that George Wise with wife Mary, of West Pennsboro and Mifflin, Cumberland County was related to, perhaps a son of, Felix Wise (1752-1826). Felix had sold the land in the deeds to George Wise and named a (living) son George in his 1826 will.

We have notes for other men named George Wise living in Cumberland County during this era who might be related to this Wise family, but whose parents we have not identified. There are also men named George Wise in our tree for whom we have no notes. We suspect that some of these are matches, but we do not have sufficient information to know or guess which is matched to which.

Notes for men named George Wise, whose parents we have not identified:

George Wise, of Carlisle [37], who died in 1815 in Carlisle, spouse of Rebecca. Note that George Wise of Carlisle named George Wise of South Middleton as an executor of his will.

George Wise [38], who died in 1809 in Mifflin Twp, naming 5 children in his will. Felix Wise was named as one of the executors.

George Wise (about 1795-1863) [39], who died in South Middleton, spouse of Hannah Hippenheimer. He was taxed in 1829 in South Middleton with 59 acres of limestone land. [40]

1827, 1829 George Wise, blacksmith, was taxed in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. [41] [42]

1826 George Wise, wagon maker was taxed in Carlisle. [43]

Places in our tree for men named George Wise, for whom we have no notes:

George Wise, son of Jacob (1708-1798) and Sophia Wise [44].

George Michael Wise (1726-1777+), who might have had a son named George. [45] We have not seen the will of George Michael Wise.

Jacob Wise (1750-1817), who might have had a son named George. [46] Jacob Wise did not name his children in his 1817 will.
