Notes for Jacob Wise and Anna Maria Haffner

1745 Jacob Wise was born on February 9 [1] in Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

1770 Johann Jacob Weiss, son of Jacob Weiss, and Anna Maria Haffner, daughter of Friedrich Haffner, were married on July 8, 1770; at 6 o'clock at Jacob Weiss' House. [2] [3] Other than occuring in the right place (Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County) at about the right time (10 months before the birth of the oldest child) with the right names (this Jacob's wife, Mary, was named on several deeds) there is no other evidence that this is the marriage record for this Jacob Weiss.

1773 Jacob Wise "on Renkin" (Renkin was perhaps the landowner "Rankin" mentioned in several land transactions and surveys) was taxed in Allen Twp, Cumberland County. Jacob Wise Junr was also taxed. [4]

1773 Jacob Wise, perhaps this Jacob Wise or his son, received a warrant for "Pond Tract" with 124 acres in Allen Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania on June 10. [5] [6] A survey was made of the tract on October 19, 1774. [7] He received a patent for the land on November 26, 1774. [8] The land was next to lands of Richard Rankin [9] [10], William Culbertson, William Hammersley, and his own. Yellow Breeches Creek ran through the property.

1773 Jacob Wise in ye Barrance was taxed in Allen Twp, Cumberland County. [11] [perhaps Barrens, described in Donehoo [12]]:

The earliest arrivals avoided in settlement that was known to them as "The Barrens" the section of country west of the Susquehanna River for ten or twelve miles, lying between the Conodoguinet and Yellow Breeches Creeks. "Not a tree was to be seen on a thousand acres" Rupp tells us.

1774 Jacob Wise Jr was taxed in Allen Twp, Cumberland County. [13]

1774 Thomas Rankin, of Fermanagh Twp, Cumberland County (now in Juniata County), sold 120 acres of land to Jacob Weiss, on November 23. The land was in Allen Twp. The land was bounded by other land sold by Rankin to Jacob Wise. [14]

1774 Jacob Weiss, perhaps this Jacob Wise or his son, received a warrant for a tract called "Weissenfeld" of 120.8 acres in Allen Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania on November 24. It was warranted by Thomas Rankin. Jacob Weiss received a patent for the land on November 25, 1774. [15] [16] [17] [18] The land was adjacent to Jacob Wise's 1773 warrant and to land of Hugh Gibson, Richard Peters, Thomas Hammersley, and Thomas Rankin.

1775 Jacob Wise and wife Mary sold 2 tracts of land to Peter Bricker, all of Allen Twp, Cumberland County, on May 3. One tract of 120 acres was patented by Jacob Wise on November 25, 1774, described as adjacent to lands of Thomas Rankin?, William Culbertson, Richard Peters, Hugh Gilston, and Thomas Hammersly [perhaps the land purchased on March 12, 1771]. Jacob Wise patented the second tract, called Pond tract, on November 26, 1774. Both patents are in book AA14, page 774. Witnessed by Ludwig ? and John Creight?. [19]

[67]. The 1830 land record for son Leonard Wise, son of Jacob Jr, was also adjacent to David Rowan, perhaps the same land.

1799 "Carlisle, May 29. Died - Last week after a long and painful sickness, Mrs. Weiss, wife of Mr. Jacob Weiss, of Middleton township." [68] [69]

1799 Jacob F Wise was taxed for 150 acres, 147 acres formerly A Calhoon's, 3 horses, and 4 cows. Jacob Jr was taxed for 100 acres, perhaps the 100 acres taxed in 1795. Jacob Wise, blacksmith was also taxed. George and Frederick Wise were taxed as freemen. [70]

[81] This could be the house of John Jacob, with him listed in the wrong age column, since John Jacob Sr should be age 65. Jacob Jr, John Jr, and Frederick Wise each had separate listings in Middleton, each age 26-44. [82]

[84] [85]

1814 Jacob Weise Sr was taxed in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 257 acres P., 4 horses, and 5 cows. Frederick Weise (perhaps Jacob's son) was taxed for 40 acres (this is likely the 40 acre difference from the 1811 tax listing). [86]

1830 Jacob Wise Senior died in 1830, and was buried at Old Churchtown Cemetery, Monroe Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Jacob was born on February 9, 1745. [112]

Research Notes:

This Jacob Wise (born 1744) had wife Mary. He was a son of Jacob Wise (born 1708) who had wife Sophia, lived in Berwick Twp, York County, Pennsylvania in 1792 and then moved to Middleton Twp, Cumberland County where he died in 1798. This Jacob Wise (born 1744) had a cousin, son of uncle George, named Jacob Wise, who was born 1750, married Agness, and died in Allen Twp in 1817. It is a challenge to distinguish Jacob (born 1708) and Jacob (born 1744) of Middleton and Jacob (born 1750) of Allen in some land records and documents. There may be other people named Jacob Wise in the area. It is plausible that I have confused some of the notes of these persons and I would appreciate any corrections or further information. These notes attempt to link the many neighbors and witnesses who are named in various documents, in order to attempt to clarify which of the various Jacob Wise's each document pertains to.

The genealogy given here of four generations of this Wise family is substantially based on two documents: a biosketch and a will, each of which link three generations. The biosketch links this Jacob Wise and his children, including John Jacob Wise, and a grandson in the family of John Jacob Wise. The children of this Jacob Wise were named in a biosketch of grandson William (died 1869), which named John Jacob Wise as William's father and reported that John Jacob Wise was born 1767 (shown here as 1771) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, attended school there, and moved to Cumberland County with his father (this Jacob, born 1744) when he was a "large boy" and listed the siblings of John Jacob Wise as George, Frederick, Leonard, Michael, Mary, and Susanna. [113]

The link of this Jacob (born 1745) to the father and children shown here, is based on the will of (father) Jacob Wise, dated 5 May 1795. The will was in probate court on April 28, 1798. The will named seven children: Martin, Henry, Jacob, John, Sophia Margaret wife of Mark Brindle, Anna Maria wife of John Wormley, and George Wise and grandsons John and Frederick, sons of son Jacob Wise with executors son Jacob Wise and nephew Jacob Wise, of Allen Twp. Witnesses: Michael Ridner (perhaps Michael Ritner, born c 1755), Wm. Scott., Jean Carothers [114] [115]. The grandsons named in that will are assumed here to be the oldest sons, John Jacob (born 1771) and Frederick, of this Jacob (born 1745), the other grandsons perhaps not being of age when the will was written.

1781 A church record abstract reports that Anna Margareta Weiss, daughter of Jacob Weiss, was baptized at the German Reformed Church in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. This abstraction is in error. The original record, instead, lists the birth of Jacob Weiss on September 13, 1781, sponsored by Elteren (parents). Was this infant Jacob perhaps a son of George, son of this Jacob? The name Anna Margareta was related to the prior baptism. [116]

Who was Elizabeth Weise, of Carlisle, with brothers Henry, Frederick, and Jacob, and likely sister Susan, and nieces and nephews as named in her 1889 will.

1840 Elizabeth Wise lived in Carlisle Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in a household with females: 1 (10 thru 14), 1 (30 thru 39), and 1 (60 thru 69). [117]

1850 Elizabeth Weise [indexed as Lorise] (age 43) lived in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania with Susannah Wise (age 30). [118]

1860 Elizabeth Wise (age 52) lived in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania with Susan Wise (age 40). Maria C Wise (age 55), was listed nearby with George (age 22) and Amanda (age 18). [119]

1870 Eliza Wise (age 60) lived in East Ward Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania with Susan Wise (age 45). Maria Wise, (age 64), was listed nearby. [120]

1880 Elizabeth Wise (age 73) lived on Bedford Street in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. [121]

1889 The will of Elizabeth Wise of Carlisle was dated on October 16, 1889 and proved on October 22, 1889 and was executed by brother, Jacob Wise. The will named the heirs of brother Henry Wise, deceased; brother Frederick Wise; niece Eliza Ann Musselman, wife of David Musselman; nephew Henry Morrison; niece Eliza Morrison, wife of Andrew Morrison.
