1746 Jacob Huber and wife Elisabeth of Warwick County sold land to Henry Dehrdorf [6] [7]. The land was adjacent to land of Peter Fravenger, Jacob Wise [Weiss], perhaps this Jacob or his father [see Jacob Wise's warrant of 1752], John Ernest, and John Starr. [8]

1750 Jacob Wise was appointed guardian for his niece, Elizabeth Ketch. Jacob's brother, George, was appointed guardian for nephew Micheal Ketch. Jacob's son, Jacob Wise, remained a dear friend of cousin Michael Ketch until their deaths in 1830 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. "Michael Ketch, son of Michael Ketch deceased, being upwards of seventeen years, comes into (Lancaster Orphan's) court and chuses George Michael Weis to be his guardian. Elizabeth Ketch, one of the daughters of Michael Ketch, chuses Jacob Weis guardian. George Michael Weis and Jacob Weis were appointed guardians over Sophia and Martin Ketch, minor and orphan children of Michael Ketch". [9]

1751 Michael Weis and Jacob Weis were taxed in Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County. [10]

1752 A land warrant named Jacob Weise father of two sons, Jacob and George Michael. Jacob Senior received a warrant for the land on January 4, 1733 and then divided the 240 acres on Cocalico (Middle) Creek between the two sons. Jacob Senior died before the land was patented or surveyed. The division was recorded in the Orphans Court 1752-54. Jacob Junior was awarded both shares of the land. Jacob Junior then transferred George Michael's 140 acre share to George Michael by deed in 1754. [11]

1752 Jacob Weiss was granted a warrant, on March 12, and a patent, on December 13, 1753, for 140 acres on Middle Creek in Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] The land was next to land of brother George Michael Weiss [17], George Weaver [18], Henry Deardorf [19], and Adam Uland. Other adjacent lands were held by Gerhard Koffroth, Greenwalt, and Pence.

1752 Berks County, Pennsylvania was formed about this time, from parts of Cumberland and Lancaster Counties. Jacob Weiss may have owned properties in all three of these counties during his lifetime.

1753/54 "Orphans' Court held at Lancaster for the County of Lancaster, the third day of September 1754. Before Emanuel Carpenter, Adam Simon Kuhn, James Smith, Robert Thompson, William Jevon, Esqrs. 1754 Two of Jacob Wise's sons were confirmed at the Cocalico congegration, Lancaster County. [23]

Holy Communion at Cocalico, 14th April 1754, Preparative held April 12, or Good Friday, at which time the following were confirmed: …

6. Joh. Lenhart, Jacob Weiss's son, born April 25, 1740.

1754 Jacob Wise and others were appointed, on December 4, to appraise the estate of Henry Deardorff, deceased [Lancaster County]. The appraisal was returned on 5 March. [Henry Deardorf owned land adjacent to that of Jacob Wise][24]

1754 Morgan Morgan and wife Catherine, of Cumru Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania, sold land in Cumru Twp, Berks County, to Jacob Weiss, tailor, of Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, on April 2. [25] Jacob Weiss and wife Anna Maria sold the property in 1771 by Berks County Deed A6-454.

The heirs included daughter Elizabeth, wife of Michael Kitch [a nephew of this Jacob Wise] of Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They settled the estate of Baltzer in 1755 and then sold the land to Jacob Erbe in 1757. George Ringer had previously sold the land on Cocalico Creek, a branch of the Conestoga River, to Baltzer Francis, who died intestate, leaving widow Anna Barbara Francis. [26] [27] [28] The land was next to land of Jacob Wise, Henry Landis, John Andreus. Witnessed by George Michael Wise. [29] [30] [Photocopy, Survey of Francis tract, 1756.]

1758 Jacob Weiss and his wife Sophia, late of Cocalico Twp and now of Montgomery Twp [sic], Berks County, sold land in Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, on December 6. Jacob had warranted the tract in 1752 and it was patented on December 13, 1753, to Daniel Bollinger of Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County. Witnessed by George Michael Wise, Jacob's brother, and Jacob Senseney. [31] [32]

1761 Jacob Weise's tract in Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, warranted in 1752, was shown adjacent to land surveyed to George Albright/Albert. [33]

1767 Jacob Weis was taxed in Cumru Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania for 150 acres, 3 horses, 3 cattle, and 5 sheep. [37] Henry Weis was taxed as a single man, suggesting he was born before 1746. [38]

1768 Jacob Weis was taxed in Cumru Twp, Berks County, Pennsylvania for 150 acres, 4 horses, 4 cattle, and 6 sheep. [39] Henry Weis was taxed as a single man. [40]

1770 Johann Jacob Weiss, son of Jacob Weiss, married Anna Maria Haffner, daughter of Friedrich Haffner, on July 8, 1770; at 6 o'clock at Jacob Weiss' House. Perhaps this was the marriage of son Jacob. [41]

1771 Jacob Wise (signature appears to be in German script), tailor of Cumru Twp, Berks County, gave a mortgage to Thomas Rankin of Allen Twp, Cumberland County, on March 10. The mortgage was for 750 pounds (150 pounds due 8 May 1771, 60 pounds on 8 May 1772-81 annually), for 300 acres in Allen Twp on Yellow Breeches Creek. The tract was bounded: S(outh) by Richard Ranken, W(est) by William Cuthbertson, NW by Rev. Mr. Peters, N(orth) by Hugh Gibson, and E(ast) by Thomas Hammersley. Mortgagee and wife Isabella gr. March 10, 1771 to mortgagor. Richard Rankin, Richard Steel witnessed on March 12, 1771. Recorded on May 21, 1771. [42]

1771 Thomas and Isabel Rankin of Allen Twp granted land, on March 12, to Jacob Wise, tailor of Cumru Twp, Berks County, for 905 pounds and a quit rent commitment, due October 1, 1773. The tract of 300 acres in Allen Twp on Yellow Breeches Creek was next to land of: Richard Rankin on the southwest, William Culberson on the west, Rev Richard Peters on the northwest, Hugh Gibson on the north, Thomas Hammersley on the east. Signed on March 12, 1771 by Richard Rankin, Richard Steel and by William Lyon on 27 Oct 1775. [43]

1771 Jacob Weiss and wife Anna Maria, of Cumru Twp, Berks County, sold land to George Reihm on April 17. In 1754, Morgan Morgan had sold the land to Jacob Weiss, party hereto, by Berks County Deed A2-106. [44]

Jacob Weiss moved from Berks County to Cumberland County.

1773 Jacob Wise in ye Barrance was taxed in Allen Twp, Cumberland County. [45] [perhaps Barrens, described in Donehoo [46]]:

The earliest arrivals avoided in settlement what was known to them as "The Barrens" the section of country west of the Susquehanna River for ten or twelve miles, lying between the Conodoguinet and Yellow Breeches Creeks. "Not a tree was to be seen on a thousand acres" Rupp tells us.

1773 Jacob Wise on Renkin (Renkin was perhaps the landowner "Rankin" mentioned in several subsequent land transactions) was taxed in Allen Twp, Cumberland County. Jacob Wise Junr was also taxed. [47]

1774 Jacob Wise Sen was taxed in Allen Twp, Cumberland County. [48]

1775 Jacob Wise Sen'r was taxed for 135 acres, 1 horse, 2 cows, and 4 sheep in Allen Twp, Cumberland County. He had 200 acres wooded and 50 acres clear. Jacob Wise Jr was taxed with no land. [49]

1778 Jacob Wise Senior was taxed in Allen Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania for 2 horses and 3 cattle. Two Jacob Wise Jr entries and Felix Wise and Leonard Wolf (see 1785 note) were also taxed. [50] [51]

1783 Jacob Wise was taxed in York Twp, York County, Pennsylvania with 2 males and 3 females. [58]

1786 Jacob Wise was taxed, in 1786, in Berwick Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. Son-in-law Mark Brindle was taxed in the same place. [59]

1788 Jacob Wise was taxed with 118 acres in Berwick Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [60]

1790 There were two listings for men named Jacob Wise in the census for East Cumberland, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania [61]. Martin and George Wise and David Rowan [see 1798 direct tax] were listed on the same page.

1792 John Mohler and wife Ann purchased land in Cocalico Twp, Lancaster County, from Peter Bollinger that Daniel Bollinger had purchased from Jacob and George Michael Weiss and their wives Sophia and Christina. Peter Bollinger and Ann Mohler were the two children and heirs of Daniel Bollinger. Jacob Weiss and wife Sophia had sold one tract to Daniel Bollinger on December 6, 1758 (Lancaster Deed K-56), which Jacob had patented (Patent A19-163) based on the warrant of Jacob Wise Sr, dated December 13, 1753. George Michael Weiss and wife Christina had sold two tracts, containing together 71 acres, to Daniel Bollinger on October 16, 1767 (Lancaster Deed O-383); which George Michael had patented (Patent AA2-479) on January 27, 1762. [62]

1792 Conrad Derr of Dauphin County obtained a bond, in June, for 100 pounds payable in 5 years, from Jacob Wise, who was then living in York County. Jacob Wise contested the bond as having been obtained fraudulently (see Jacobs will dated 1798). "Whereas Jacob Wise Senr, living in York County, when he was in Harrisburg upon business, was by a certain Conrad Derr, of Dauphin County, forced in a most deceitful and fraudulent manner to sign a judgment payable to the said Derr. Persons are warned that he will not honor the same." [63] [64] [65]

1798 Jacob Wise (senior) and Jacob Wise junior were taxed for property in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Jacob Wise (senior) was adjacent to James Hamilton. Jacob Wise Jr was adjacent to David Rowan. [66] Jacob Wise (senior) owned a one story wood house, dimension 24 by 18 feet, with 3 windows and 24 panes of glass on 100 acres, occupied by Jacob Wise Jr. [67] Jacob Wise (senior) owned a one story wood house 32 by 25 feet with 5 windows and 58 lights, which he occupied. [68]. The 1830 land record for grand-son Leonard Wise, son of Jacob Jr, was also adjacent to David Rowan, perhaps the same land.

1798 The will of Jacob Wise of Middleton was dated May 5, 1795 with probate on April 28, 1798, in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Eldest son John Martin (five hundred pounds), John (my bible), Henry (book True Christianity), George (sermon book), Sophia Margaret wife of Mark Brindle (bed, bedstead, and bedding), grandsons John (six plate stove) and Frederick (my cupboard), sons of son Jacob Wise. Residue to be divided among seven children: Martin, Henry, Jacob, John, Sophia Margaret the wife of John Brindle, Anna Maria the wife of John Wormley, and George Wise. A lawsuit involving Conrad Derr of Dauphin County was mentioned (for fraud committed by Derr on 12 June 1792). A bond from the sale of a plantation in Berwick Twp, York County was mentioned. Executors named were beloved son Jacob Wise and beloved nephew Jacob Wise of Allen Township. Wit.: Michael Ridner (perhaps Michael Ritner), Wm. Scott, Jean Carothers. Signed with his mark. [69] [70]

1799 At the Orphans' Court at Carlisle, Cumberland County, on October 15, "came into court Jacob Weise and Jacob Weise, executors of the last will and testament of Jacob Weise deceased and produced an account of their administration. The court having adjusted and passed the same find a balance of seven hundred and forty one pounds three shillings and eight pence (£741.3.8) in the hands of the executors subject to distribution according to the will." [71]

1800 David Rowan and George Wise lived in Carlisle Twp, Cumberland County and sons John (Leonhart?), Jacob, and Jacob Junior lived in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. (US census, 1800)

Research Notes:

The records above suggest that this Jacob Wise (born 1708) had wife Sophia, lived in Lancaster County as late as 1752; then lived in Berks County in 1754-1771, as a tailor, where he (or his son?) married Anna Maria; then lived in Allen Twp, Cumberland County in 1774-1782; then lived in Berwick Twp, York County, Pennsylvania in 1792; and died in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County in 1798, with son Jacob Wise and beloved nephew Jacob Wise as executors. Jacob (born 1708) had son Jacob (born 1744) with wife Mary. Jacob Wise (born 1708) had a nephew, son of brother George Michael, named Jacob Wise, who was born 1750, married Agness, and died in Allen Twp in 1817. It is a challenge to distinguish Jacob (born 1708) and Jacob (born 1744) of Middleton and Jacob (born 1750) of Allen in some land records and documents. Jacob (born 1708) was a son of Jacob Wise and Jacob (born 1754) had a son Jacob. It is plausible that I have made some errors by confusing the notes of these persons named Jacob Wise, and I would appreciate receiving any corrections or further information.

1768 Jacob Wise of C[umberland]C[ounty] applied for 300 acres on the southern branch of Little Juniata (near the head of the same than Edward Murphys Claim) as it comes from the Allegheny Hill in Cumberland County. [72]

1768 John Jacob Wise made application for 300 acres of land on the north branch of makatango joining lines with John Cox and lands of Regabak Adulch? shoemaker excluding three runs. [73]
