"William Waller, of Groombridge, high sheriff of Kent, 1537, m. Anne, dau. of William Fallemar, Esq. of Esteney, Hants, and dying in 1555, left two sons, i William, his successor, and ii. John. From the 2nd son, John Waller, descended Robert Waller, who m. Anna, dau. of Griffin Hampden, Esq. of Hampden, co. Bucks, and sister of the famous republican, John Hampden, and was father of Edmund, the celebrated poet, and three daus., one m. to Mr. Tomkins, clerk of the Council, one to a Mr. Price, and another to Col. Scroop. The son and heir, Edmund Waller, of Hall Barn, Beaconsfield, Bucks. (the celebrated poet) was born at Coleshill, 3 March, 1605; he was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge; became M.P. at seventeen years of age, and took a considerable share during his long career in the politics of his time. His lasting fame was, however, achieved by his exquisite poetry. The Lady Dorothea Sydney, to whom be gave the fanciful name of Sacharissa, but who rejected his ardent suit, formed the graceful subject of his earlier effusions. All his productions display great elegance, taste, and abilitr, and hold a classic position in English literature. Waller lived latterly in retirement at his splendid seat, Hall Barn, Beaconsfield, Bucks. He d. 1687, and lies interred in the churchyard of Beaconsfield." [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
