Notes for Josiah Rohrer and Susan Miller

We are researching Joseph J Rohrer [1] and Harriet Myers, who lived at South West, Harrison Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana at the same time that Josiah and Susan Rohrer lived in Goshen. Josiah Rohrer is referred to, in some newspaper documents, as Joseph Rohrer. These notes help us organize the documentation for these two different families.

Research Notes:

1860 Josiah Rohrer (age 11, born Ohio) lived with Jacob Rohrer (age 36, born Ohio) and Catharine Rohrer (age 36, born PA) and Magdalene Rohrer (age 68) in Holmes County, Ohio. [2]

1870 On 31 March, Josiah Rohrer and Susan Miller were married at Elkhart County, Indiana. [3]

1870 Josiah Rohrer (age 21, born Ohio) and Susan Rohrer (age 20, born Indiana) lived in Indiana. [4]

1880 Josiah Rohrer (age 31, born Ohio) and Susan Rohrer (age 31, born Indiana) lived in Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana with Maggie (age 9), Ada (age 7), and Daisy (age 1). [5]

1889 "Jacob Rohrer, aged about 65 years, an old and respected citizen of this city, died at the residence of his son Joseph Rohrer at about 4 o'clock this morning. The funeral will take place on Sunday fofenoon at Rodibaugh's cemetery." [6] [7]

1890 On May 16, Maggie R. Rohrer married J. Andrew Myers in Elkhart County, Indiana. [8]

1890 "Mrs. Joseph Rohrer went to Chicago this morning, where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Myers."

1894 On 3 September, Adah V Rohrer and George E Bienz were married at Elkhart County, Indiana. [11]

1900 Josiah Rohrer (born Apr 1848) and Susan (born Oct 1849) lived in Gosham City, Elkhart County with Daisy (age 21) and Ira (age 17). Josiah was a teamster. [12]

1900 "The wedding of Miss Elizabeth Miller of this city to Dr. Samuel Pagin of Valparaiso, who has made special visits to Goshen periodically for a number of years, has just been announced and the newly wedded couple has already gone to housekeeping in the property of John F. B. Kaufman on East Purl street. They were married several weeks ago at South Bend and the matter had been kept secret. The bride is well known and is a sister of Mrs. Joseph Rohrer of East Monroe street, with whom she has made her home for over five years. Dr. Pagin is a skilled physician of many years experience and intends to practice in Goshen. They had been sweethearts for eighteen years. A dispatch received by The News from Valparaiso this afternoon says Dr. Pagin made the announcement there today also and much surprise was created thereby. The doctor has been a widower for many years. He has a son who is a successful dentist in Valparaiso." [13]

1901 "Mrs. A. Binz, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rohrer, returned to her home in South Bend." [14] [15]

1902 On 17 July, Daisy C. Rohrer and Carl E Kearns were married at Elkhart County, Indiana. [16]

1904 "Mrs. Joseph Rohrer of Goshen has received a letter from the Presbyterian Mission Board stating that all missionaries in Corea [Korea] have been removed to a place of safety. This includes Mrs. Rohrer's daughter, Mrs. C. E. Kearns." [17] [18]

1904 "Beth Bienze, the eight-year daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Bienze, of South Bend, who has been staying with her grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Rohrer, of East Monroe street, is in a critical condition and grave fears are entertained of the child not recovering. Scarlet fever was followed by complications and the child is now unable to talk." [19] [20]

1904 "Letters have been received from Mrs. C.E. Kearns, nee Daisy Rohrer, of this city, and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rohrer, stating that she and her husband. Rev.' Kearns, both of whom are missionaries in Corea, are about to move from Shym Chum to Seoul. The letters were written before war between Japan and Russia was declared. She writes that they feared that their location would be in the zone of warfare." [21] [22]

1907 "Kauffman/Weaver Marriage. Miss Carolyn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Weaver of Bremen and Harvey E. Kauffman, youngest son of Mrs. Anna Kauffman, of this city, were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rohrer, 110 East Monroe street. Thanksgiving morning by Rev. E. A. VanNuys. Miss Weaver is a popular young lady who has made her home in Goshen for some time, being a clerk at the Colonial Flower Shop, which position she will still hold. N They will reside with the groom's parents on East Lincoln avenue. They have the best wishes of a large circle of friends." [23] [24]

1915 "Mrs. George Bienz and children of Cincinnati, are visiting Joseph Rohrer and family." [25] [26]

1921 Joe Rohrer (1849-1921) died and was buried at Baintertown Cemetery, New Paris, Elkhart County, Indiana. [27]

1938 Susan Rohrer (1849-1938) died and was buried at Baintertown Cemetery, New Paris, Elkhart County, Indiana. [28]

1949 On 12 March, Adah V. Benz, daughter of Josiah Rohrer and Susan Miller, died at Goshen, Indiana. [29]

Some researchers report, and we suspect, that Josiah was the son of Jacob and Catherine Rohrer, who were buried at Baintertown Cemetery [Rodibaugh's cemetery].

Jacob Rohrer, reportedly married to Catherine Myers, was born 16 July 1824 in Holmes County Ohio, son of Jacob Isaac Rohrer and Magdalena Rohrer; died 12 July 1889 in Elkhart County, Indiana

1889 Jacob Rohrer died, at age 64y 11m 27d, and was buried at Baintertown Cemetery, New Paris, Elkhart County, Indiana. [30]

1882 Catherine Rohrer, wife of Jacob, died, at age 57?y 10m 18d, and was buried at Baintertown Cemetery, New Paris, Elkhart County, Indiana. [31]
