Notes for John Rogers and Martha Clayton

Research Notes:

We are researching Isaac Rogers, married to Ann Taylor. We suspect that this John Rogers, and perhaps Martha Clayton, were his parents. We seek evidence to support or refute this assumption. There is also uncertainty about whether this John Rogers was the son of John Rogers and Mary Groom [see the research notes, below].

1687 John Rogers, son of John and Mary Rogers was born on 5 of month 1, as reported in Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey Quaker records. [1] [2] [3]

1698 The will of John Rogers (father of this John Rogers), yeoman, dated 13 Apr 1698, was filed in Nottingham, Burlington County. Children: John, Joseph, Mary. Plantation at Nottingham, other land due for a £5 purchase. Personal property. Thomas Lambert of Nottingham, John Abbot of Crosswick's Creek, executors, and with Samuel and John Bunting, both of Chesterfield, guardian of the children, who are to have one year at school, when John is to be apprenticed to a blacksmith and Joseph to a weaver or tailor. Witnesses: William Emley junior, Mary Emley junior and William Emley. Proved March 30, 1700. On 1699 Sept. 18, an inventory of the estate (£122.6.8, all personal); was made by Francis Davenport and Wm. Emley. On 1700 March 30, the bond of the executors, named in the will. Samuel Jenings fellow bondsman. [4]

1703 John Rogers was taxed in Nottingham Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey. [5]

1706 Christopher Snowden, of Burlington, West New Jersey sold to John Rogers, yeoman, of same, for £3, line of John Cathauch. Dated December 14. Signed Christopher Snowden. Wit: Robert Young & Philip Leeds. [Uncertainty: this could refer to John Rogers of Burlington, married to Martha Middleton, instead of this John Rogers, married to Martha Clayton. Both may have had interactions with the Snowden family.][6]

1712 John Rogers Jr of Nottingham sold a fractional share of West Jersey, purchased by his father John Rogers Sr, in 1683. [7]

1713 A land survey was made for John Rogers on March 26 in West Jersey for 37 Acres in Burlington Town. [May be duplicate of record on folio 58] [8]

1714 West Jersey Council minutes ordering warrant for John Rogers, Jr. [9]

1715 John Rogers and Martha Clayton witnessed a will in March. [10]

1716 John Rogers, blacksmith, sold his father's plantation in Nottingham to Robert Pearson Jr. [11]

1714-1767 West Jersey account book showing activity on John Roger's account. [12]

1735 John Rogers was elected constable in New Windsor Twp., Middlesex County. [13]

1767 Amos and Abraham Rogers' survey by right of conveyance from their father, John. [14]

1769 John Rogers, of Windsor Twp, Middlesex County, farmer, dated his will on 6 January 1769. Son, Isaac Rogers, all my lands. Son, Abraham, £10; also my lower meadow; and I give him 2 rods for a road along Augustine Gordon. Son, Joseph, £20. Son, John, £20. Son, Robert, £20. Son, Amos, £20. Son, Mathew, £20. Daughter, Mary, £20, if she demands it herself. Daughter, Martha, my household goods. Executor is to maintain his mother. Executor son, Isaac. Witnesses: Peter Groom, Thomas Groom, Samuel Reynolds. Proved April 10, 1776. [15] [16]

1807 Estate inventory of Amos Rogers of Nottingham Twp. [17]

Research Notes:

We have found no primary evidence proving that this John Rogers [Jr.]'s wife was Martha Clayton. However, some circumstantial evidence suggests that she was and she is named here as a research lead. [18] [19]

c 1713 John Rogers, born 1687, married Martha Clayton in New Jersey. [20] (Sons of the American Revolution application, ancestry.com, reports ancestors John Rogers and Martha Hill of North Carolina)

There were two men named John Rogers living in Burlington County, both born about 1687, and both married to Martha. The other John Rogers [21] lived in Burlington city, rather than Nottingham Twp, and was married to Martha Middleton. It is difficult to know which John Rogers was referred to in some documents, so some of the notes above might involve the other John Rogers. We do not know which, if either, was born on March 1, 1687 to John and Mary Rogers.

Other researchers have identified John Rogers, son of John Rogers and Mary Groom as the John Rogers who maried Martha Middleton. We do not know which assumption, if either, is correct. The Haines genealogy follows some descendants of John, of England [22].

1724 John Rogers was reported born [23]

1725 Samuel Rogers was reported born [24]

1735 Isaac Rogers was born 7th mo, 7th, 1735. [25] [26]
