Notes for William Coate and Sarah Hollingshead

1769 On 22 of month 1, William Coate, son of Barzillai Coate and wife Elizabeth, was born. [1] [2] [3]

1788 William Coate, ward and son of Barzillai Coate deceased, chose Samuel Evans as his guardian. Samuel Evans was appointed with fellowbondsman Thomas Hollingshead, both of Evesham Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey. [4]

1788 On 14 February, William Coate, son of Barzillai Coate, married Sarah Hollingshead at the Evesham Quaker meeting, Burlington County. Witnessed by Hannah Coate, Edith Coate, and many others. [5] [6] [7] [8]

1790 On 18 of month 5, Hannah Coate, daughter of Barzilla (deceased) and Elizabeth Coate, of Chester, married Daniel Smith, son of Daniel Smith, at Evesham meeting, Burlington County. Witnessed by Elizabeth D Benneville (mother), Hannah Stokes (grand-mother?), William Coate (brother), Sarah Coate (sister-in-law), Edith Coate (sister), and many others. [9] [10]

1792 In month 9, William Coate, wife, and minor child Barzillai, were granted a certificate from Evesham to Mt. Holly meeting. [11]

1793 On 7 of month 2, William and Sarah Coate and infant son transferred from Evesham meeting to Mt Holly meeting, Burlington County, New Jersey. [12]

The children of William (born 22 of month 1, 1769) and Sarah Coate were recorded in the Mount Holly records. [13]

1811 On 3 December, William Coaste died at Ocean, New Jersey. [14]

1811 On 26 December, the inventory for William Coate of New Hanover, Burlington County, New Jersey was made and reported value $1,457.75, as made by Caleb Earl and Jacob Norcross. Sworn to by Sarah Coate and Barzillia Coate and John Hough on 27 December. [15] [16]

1813 On 2 November, heirs of William Coate, late of Burlington county petitioned the Orphans Court. Barzillai Coate, William Coate, Thomas Coate, Lydia now wife of Jacob Ridgway, Edith Coate, Sarah Coate, Elizabeth Coate, and Hannah Coate are the only heirs of said William Coate deceased and hold the land as tenants in common. William, Thomas, Edith, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Hannah are in their minority, so no division of the land can be made by agreement. [17]

1814 "In pursuance of a decree of the orphans court for the county of Burlington in the term of November last appointing us the subscribers commissioners to divide the real estate of William Coate late of the township of New Hanover and said county of Burlington deceased between Barzillai Coate, William Coate, Thomas H Coate, Lydia Coate Ridgeway, wife of Jacob Ridgeway, Edith [Coate?]." 1822 Jacob Ridgeway sold land to Sarah Coate, both of New Hanover Twp, on March 13, 1822. The land was from the estate of William Coate. [20]

Whereas William Coate late of the Township of New Hanover in the County and State aforesaid deceased became seized in his demesne as of fee by virtue of sundry good conveyances and assurances in the law of and in a large tract of Land Plantation and Real Estate Situate in the Township of New Hanover in the County and State aforesaid and being so seized thereof died Intestate having made no last Will or Testament and thereupon the same Estate decended to Barzilla, William, Thomas, H. Lydia, Edith, Sarah, Elizabeth and Hannah Children and heirs at law of the said William Coate deceased. And whereas in the Term of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirteen the Orphans Court of the County of Burlington Application having been made to them for that purpose did appoint Joseph Budd and Alexander Shreve and William Sharp Junr Commissioners to make division of the Real Estate of the said William Coate deceased among his heirs at law. And whereas the said Joseph Budd Alexander Shreve and William Sharp Jur Commissioners aforesaid having taken upon themselves the burthen of the said appointment did proceed to make division of the said Real Estate and did assign and set off unto the said Lydia wife of Jacob Ridgeway Jr party hereto of the first part in severally the lot No 9 as mentioned and numbered in the map annexed to the report of the said commissioners and situate in the Township of New Hanover, in the County and State aforesaid and bounded in manner following … And whereas the said Jacob Ridgeway Jr party hereto of the first part having intermarried with the said Lydia late Lydia Coate and having had by her issue is entitled to hold the said lott No 9 which was assigned and set off to the said Lydia by the Commissioners aforesaid during his natural life as Tenant by the curtesy and whereas the said Jacob Ridgway hath agreed for the consideration herein after mentioned to convey to the said Sarah Coate his right and Interest in the said lot of land so as aforesaid assigned ans set off the the said Lydia by the commissioners aforesaid Now this indenture witnesseth that the said Jacob Ridgway Jur for and in consideration of the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars to him in hand paid by the said Sarah Coate at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged …

1829 The estate of Thomas Hollinshead named daughter Sarah Coate. [21] [22]
