1574 Thomas Hovenden and Sara Sarr were married on September 14 in St. Alphage, Canterbury, Kent, England. [1]

1612 Thomas Hovenden wrote his will on September 10. [2]

In the name of God Amen the tenth day of the moneth of September in the yere of our Lord God one thousand six hundred and twelve I Thomas Hovenden one of the Aldermen of the Citie of Canterbury being sicke in body but of sound and perfect remembrance (god be therefore ever praysed) do ordayne and make this my last will and Testament in manner and forme following First I bequeath my soule to Almightie God my Creator and Redeemer trusting that by the death and passion of Jesus Christ my Saviour my sinnes are forgiven mee and that I shall live with him for ever My body I bequeath to the earth to be decently buried yf God will by the leave of the Revered the Deane of Christes Church of Canterbury in the North Isle of the body of the same Church near to the place where the body of my sole deere and only Child Ann lyeth buried - at my funerall by some godly preacher for the edifying of such as then shalbe there vnto which preacher I give for his paynes taken in that behalfe the summe of twenty shillinges - Item I give and bequeath to the poore of the parish of St ANdrew of the said Citie the summe of Forty shillinges And also to the poore of the parish of the blessed Marie of Northgate of the said Citye one other summe of Forty shillinges to be distribute amongest the poore of the said severall parishes where the Churchwardens and Overseers of the poore of the said severall parishes shall thinke most need and convenient Item I geve and bequeath to my Cosyn Coopley on of the daughter of my sister Dorothy Batherst late of Frittenden deceased and now wife vnto Luke Coopley of London the sume of five pounds to be paid her within a quarter of a yere next after my decease And also I give and bequeath vnto my Cosyn [blank] Venables one other of the daughters wife of [blank] Venables of London the summ of five pounds to be paid also vnto her within a quarter of a yere next after my decease. Item I give and bequeath vnto my Cosyn Mary Baker one of the Daughter of my brother Richard Hovenden deceased and now wife vnto John Baker of Cranebrook the summe of five poundes. Item I give & bequeath vno Anne Sare daughter vnot my brother Stephen Sare and goddaughter vnto my said daughter Ann the summe of twenty poundes towards her preferment in maryage awhich xx li I will shall be paid to the said Ann Sare at her age of foure and Twentie yeeres or within a quarter of a yere next after the day of her mariage which shall first happen I feve and bequeath vnto the sone of old John Browne late dwelling at a place Called Taywell in the parish of Gowtherst in the County of Kent the summe of five pounds to be paid and equallie devided amongest them within halfe a yere next after my decease Item I give and bequeath vto John Weller the elder of Cranebrooke aforesaid brother vto Alexander Weller deceased the summe of five pounds to be paid within halfe a yere next after my decease Itme I give and bequeath vnto Margarett Gurner fome tyme my Servant and now wife of [blank] Gurner of Sandwich the summe of forty shillings Item I gife and bequeath vnto Suzanne Wilkynsooone my late servant now wife of Robert Wilkynsonne the summe of forty shillings I Give and bequeath vnot Mary Ellis sometime my servant and wnow wife of [blank] Ellis of Ashford the summe of fourty shillings Item I give and bequeath vnto Frances Henly my late servant the summe of Twenty shillinges and also vnto ary Crosse my now servant the summe of Twenty shillines Item I geve and bequeath vnto my Cosyn Robert Hovenden one of the sonnes of my brother Gyles Hovenden deceased the summe of Twenty pounds to be paid vnto him within one yere next after my decease And I geve and bequeath vnto Gyles Hovenden and Thomas Hovenden two other sonnes of my said brother Gyles Hovenden to eyther of them the summe of five pounds to be paid also within the said yere next after my decease Itm I will the yf the Maier and Co(m)i(n)altie of the City of Canterbury or the Chamberlyne of the siad City for the tyme being shall and do withing the space of two yeres next after my decease first of the costes and Charges of the said Maier and Co(m)i(n)altie Cause to be made or provided very good, fayre and sufficient hanginges of Tapestrey worke to Cover and hang about the place of the COurt, the Guildhall of the said City so fully and longly as the paunted Cloth is there now hong And that the same Tapestry Cloth shall be there Conveniently fytted and hong vp within the said tyme and in the said place there to remaine and continve then I will that my Executor shall at the third Gourmouth which shall be holden with the said Guilde hall next after thet the said tapestry Cloth shall be provided fytted and hong vp as aforesaid pay or Cause to be paid to the Chamgerlayne of the said City for the tyme being to the use of the said maior and Co(m)i(n)altie of the summ of twenty pounds of good and lawfull money of England which I give and bequeath to the said Maior and Co(m)i(n)altie toward the Charges of the procureing and fitting of the said tapestry Cloth Provided allwayes and my mind and will is that yf the said Tapestry Cloth and the providing and fitting of the same shall not Cost the full some of twentie poundes or mored that then my executor shal at the said Barmouth pay or Cause to be paid to the vse of the said Maier and Co(m)i(n)altie full out so much as the said Tapestry Cooth and the prividing and fitting of the same did Cost and no more And I will that my executor shall within the tyme of one moneth next after my decease deliver or Cause to be delivered in writing vnto the Chamberlayne of the said Citie at my will which dith only concerne this my Legacie touching the said Cloth Item I will that yf I myselfe in my life tye do not pay or cause to be aid vnton Thomas Hovendon one of the sonnes of my said brother Richard Hovendin the somme of three scores and one poundes which is assined vnto him by the right worthy Mr Doctor Newman out of the goods of my said brother for his portion as it doth appear vpon the foote of the account of Stephen Sare Administror of the goods and Chattelles of my said brother Richard which lxj li is now only remayning in my handes of the porcons assigned out of the siad goodes (for the porcons assigned vnto Mary Hovendon, John Hovendon and Margarett Hovendon have byn by me already paid to every of them) that ehtn my executors shall pay or cause to be paid vnto the said Thomas Hovenden the said sum of three scores an one poundes for his said porcon allotted vnot him out of the said goods Provided allwayes that the said Thomas Hovenden ahall at the payment of the said lxi li by act to be entred in the Court before the right worshipfull the then Comissary sufficiently acquitt and discharge the ssid Stephen Sare his executors and Administrators of the said porcon Item I Iwll that my executor shall pay vnto THoas Tuesdall or to whom it shall in right be due from him the summe if Twenty shillinges yf I in my life tyme do not myselfe pay the same which xx s I received when I was Chamberlen of the said Citye from William Birchinshawe then of London M[aster] vnto the said Thomas Thesdall viz vjs viijd yerely for three years which was to be kept in stock for the said Thomas vntill he should Come out of his Apprentice ship and where the said Thomas how is or whether he be now lyveing or to shome the same is due yf he be dead I do not nowe knowe The residue of all my goodes and Chattles my debts Legacies and funerall charges fulfilled performed and paid I give vnto Sara my wife whom I make sole executrix of this my last will.
This is the last will testament of me the first before named Thomas Hovendon made and declared the day and yeare first before written touching the disposicon of all my messuages, Landes, Tenementes and hereditamentes scituat and being within the County of Kent and within the County of the City of Canterburie or eyther of them First I will that the said Sara my wife shall have all those my two messuages with all the landes to them and eyther of them belonging with their and eyther of their appurtenances scituat lying and being within the parish of Hawkherst in the said County of Kent the one now in the occupacon of John Hart and the other in the occupacion of [blank] Posier during the terme of her naturall life shee seing the reperations of eyther the said messuages and the out buildings to eyther of them belonging well and suffitiently kept and done and the Lordes rent paid during the said terme And after the death of my sayd wyfe I geve and bequeath the said Messuage nowe in the occupcon of the said John Hart and all the Landes to the said Messuage belonging withall and singuler thappurtenances vnto the said Thomas Hovenden one of the sonnes of my said brother Richard Hovenden and to the heires of the said Thomas foreever And also after the death of the said Sara my wife I geve and bequeath my said other Messuage in Hawkherst aforesaid and the lands to the same Messuage belonging with thappurtenances now in the occupacon of the said [blank] Posier vnto John Hovenden one other sonne of my said brother Richard Hovendon and to his heires forever Item I geve and bequeath my messuage wherein I now dwell scituated within the parish of St Andrew of the said Citye of Canterburie with the garden back howses and all other the appurtenances to the same messuage belonging And also the messuage which I lately nowe bayll ith the stable gardyn and orchard therevnto belonging with their appurtenances scituated in the parish of the blessed Mary of Northgate of the said Citye And also the now hopp gardyne there which I lately purchased of John ___enchkyn vnto the said Sara my wife and to her heires forever In witnes where of I have to every sheete of this present my will subscribed my name and at the end sette my seale dated the day and yere first abovewritten Witnesses at the tyme that I the said Thomas Hovenden did acknowleg and pronounce this to be my last will, William Younge, Henry Wodman Robert Wasingtonn, Thomas Hovenden

My wife Sara, sole Ex'trix, to whom my dwelling house in St Andrews, Canterbury, and also lands &c. in Hawkhurst for life, and after her death said lands to go to John, son of my brother Rich Hovenden.

1619 "Thomas Hovenden Alderman" was buried on December 30 in St. Andrew, Canterbury, Kent. [4]

1619/20 The will of Thomas Hovenden was proved on January 13 in the Consistory Court of Canterbury with administration granted to Sara relict and executrix. [5]

1620 Another copy of the will of Thomas Hovenden, dated "the tenth day of the moneth of July in the yeere of our lord god one thousand six hundred and thirteene," was proved on November 7 with the court noting that it was in condordance with the earlier will. In the later will the surname of cosyn Coopley is written Cropley, and the messuage in the occupation of Positer was in the occupation of John Hovenden to whom it was bequeathed. [6]

1628 Sara Hovenden wrote her will on June 8.

In the name of God Amen The eight day of June in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred twenty and eight I Sara Hovenden of the parish of St Andrew in the Citty of Cant widdow late wife of Thomas Hovenden Esquire deceased late one of the Aldermen of the said Citty of Canterbury being at this present in perfect health and of sound memory (thanks be given vnto Allmighty god) yet calling to minde the vncertinty of this transitory life I have thought good to settle all thinges in peace whilest I have time and memory And therefore I ordaine and make this my last will and testament in manner and forme following First I bequeath my soule to Allmighty god my Creator trusting that by the death and passion of Jesus Christ my Saviour my sinnes are forgiven mee and that I shall live with him forever my body I bequeath vnto the earth to be decently buried (yf god will by the leaue of the Reverend Deane of Christ Church Cant in the North Isle of the body of the same church neere unto the place where my late deare husband and my late deare and onely child Ann ly buried And I will there shall bee a sermon made at my funerall by some godly preacher for the edifieing of such godly people as then shalbe there vnto wch preacher I give for his paines taken in that behalfe the some of twenty shillings Item I give vnto the poore of the parish of St Andrew of the said Citty the some of forty shillings And also vnto the poore of the parish of the blessed Lady Mary of Northgate fo the said Citty one other like somme of forty shillings to bee distributed amongst the poore of the said severall parishes where the church wardens and overseers of the said severall parishes shall thinke meete and convenient and most neede to bestow the same Item I will and bequeath vnto my Cosin Edward Baker the sume of twenty pounds of lawfull English money to bee paid vnto him within halfe one yeare after my decease Item I giue and bequeath vnto my goddaughter Sara Baker daughter of the said Edward Baker my gould ring wth my late husbands armes vpon it: And one other gould ring made withe fashion of a wedding ring whein is Ingraven a poesie: I like my choice to well to chenge Item I with thappurtenances whereof the one is scituate in the High streete of the said Citty of Canterbury and the other is scituate in a certaine lane in the said Citty called Jury lane )wch I now hold and enioy by demise and lease from the Deane and Chapter of Christchurch Canterbury vno my Cosin Sara Baker during the tearme of yeares therin yett to come And I allso will vnto the said Sara Baker my godddaughter my lease interest and terme of yeares wch I haue yett to come and vnexpired in halffe one acre of meadowe land more or lesse lying in the parish of Northgate of the siad Citty of Canterbury now in the occupation of Miles Bull gentelman wch I hould and enioy by virture of a lease to mee made from the Maior and Comminalty of the Citty of Canterbury aforesaid Item my will and mynde is and I doe soe heereby expresse & declare it that all the seuerall legacies and sumes of Money wch I haue giuen vnto my said goddaughter Sara Baker shalbe paid and deleiuered vnto her at her age of one and twenty yeares or daie of marriage wch shall first happen ANd that my Executor or any other vnder him shall not in the eane time use weare out or spoyle any of the goods Chattlells lynnen howsehould stuffe or plate wch I have given her and also my will is that my Executor shall allow vnto the said Sara yearly in regard of such monyes as I haue giuen her the yeerely sume of Eight pounds vntill the day of her wiage aforesaid or day of marriage wch shall first happpen ouer and abour the yearly profitts of such leases as shee shall or outht to enioy by vertue of this my last will and testament Also my will and meaning is that my Executor heereafter named shall haue the bringing upp and education of my said Cousin Sara Baker my godddaughter vntill shee shall attaine vnto the age of one and twenty yeares or day of her marriage wch shall first happen And furthermore m will and meaning is that my said Executor shall receive the yearley yssues rents and profitts of all such messuages lans and leases as shee the said Sara Baker shall or outht to enioy by virtue of this my mast will and testament vntillsuch time as shee the said Sara Baker my goddaughter shall attaine and come vnto the age of one & twenty yeares or daie of her mariage wch shal first happen and to yeale and giue up a true & inst accompt vnot her the said Sara Baker of all such monies or yearly rents as my said Executor shall receiue to her use and behoofe at her said age of one and twenty yeares or day of marriage wch shall first happen according to my trust in hime reposed my said Executor allowing himselfe reasonable and conscionalbe maintenance out of the yearly profitts of the said messuage lands & leases for the bring upp of the said Sara Baker during the time of her gouerment under my said Executors chardge Item I doe will and bequeath vnto my Executor heereafter in this my will named All my right title estate Interest terme and termes of yeares whatsoeuer wch I haue yett to come and vnexpired in my messuage Lands tenements or hereditaments whatsoeeuer by virtue of any demise or lease or demises or lease to mee heeretofore made by the Maior and Comunalty of the said Citty of Canterbury The lease of the meadowlands onely excepted and all my right title estate Interest terme & termes of yeares wch I haue yett to come and vnexpired of and in any messuages landes tenements or hereditaments whtsoevuer scituate in the parish of the Holy Crosse of Westgate in the County of Kent wch were heeretofore St. Roger Manwoods Knight late Lord Cheife Baron of the Exchequer And in Consideratcon thereof & of such other benefitt as my Executor shall or may haue or receiue by irtue of this my will I doe declare my will myne and meaning to be that my said Executor heereafter his heires Executors or Assignes shall yearly during the life of Mary Pirkinge my Cosin well and truly pay or couse to bee padi vnot the said Mary yearly durher natural life the sum of ten pounds of lawfull English money at the feast of the Nativitie of St John Baptist St Michael Tharchangell the birth of our Lord Chris and theannunciacon of the blessed virgin Mary by equall andn even porcons quarterly in every yeare to bee paid The first payment thereof to bee made at that feast of the feast aforesaid wch shall first and next happen after my decease And I doe will and appont athat my Executor shall before hee takes any benfitt of this my last will and testament enterinto bond vnto the Ordinarie or Officiall where my will shall be proved in the sume of one hundred pounds wih one sufficient sueritie at the least Condixoned for the payment of the said tenn pounds by the yeare vnto the said Mary Pirking during her naturall life in such manner and at such feasts and daies as I haue heerein before sett downe And yf hee shall refuse or neglect to doe the same within six monethes next after my decease then my will is that half the seuerall legacies wch my Executor is to haue shall remaine vnto the said Mary Pirking And I doe heereby desire my said Executor to be carefull for her duly paid the said sume of tenn pounds by the yeare and to deale well with her because shee is lame weake and sickly and and not able to help herselfe And noe meanes but this that I haue heere provided for her to releiue her Item I doe likewise declare my will and meaning to bee that euery of the particuler persons to whom I haue giuen any Legacie shall if my Executor require yt Seale vnto my executor heereagter named an accquittqnce testifieing the receipt of the legacies wch they or any of the shall receaue of him by virtue of this my will ANd that if any of them shall refuse to seale an acquittance for the testifieing & acknowledging of the receipt of his or theire legacies Then my will is that my said Executor shall detaine the legacie or legacies of th par or parties so refusing vntill hee shee or they wil willing ly doe the same Item my will and meaning is that my executor heereafter named shall keep in his hands and possessione all such legacies as I haue in this my present last will and testament gie vnto my said Cosin and goddaughter Sara Baker untill such time as shee the said Sara Baker shall attaine and come vnto the age of one and twenty yeares or day of her marriage wch shall first happen and the to deliuer them and euery of them vnto my goddaughter Sara Baker without spoyling wasting or wearinge them or any of them Item of this my last will & testament I doe make and ordaine my brother Stephen Sare my full and whole Executor to whom I doe giue the remainder of all my goods Chattells leases and ready money vnbqueathe desiring him by all meanes possible to haue or care to see my legacies paid and see my will performed in all respects according to my honest Intencon heerein expressed and to see mee buried neere vnto my late husband and my Child as before I haue expressed in this my last will and testament And I doe heereby revoke all former will and testaments by mee heeretofore made.
This is the last will & testament of mee the aforenamed Sara Hovenden made and declared the day and yeare first before written touching the disposicon of all my Lands tenements and hereditaments scituate lying and being in the County of the Citty of Canterbury First I doe will and devise the said messuage wherein I now dwell scituate and bing in the said parish of St Andrew and the outhouses ediffices buildings garden and other premisses thereonto belonging with thappurtenances vnto my louing brother Stephen Sare for the terme of his naturall life and after his decease vnto the said Sara Baker my goddaughter and to the heires of her body lawfully to bee begotten And for default of such heires then I will the same shalbe and remaine to my right heires forever And my will and minde is that all the paynted chothes in the seuerall roomes of the said messuage shalbe and remaine with the same messuage and not taken from theme or any way willfully defaced Item I will and devise vnto the said Sara Baker my goddaughter All that my messuage with the stables gardens Courte yards and Churchyards with the appurtenances lying and being in the parish of the blessed Lady Mary of Northgate of the said Citty now or late in the occupacon of the aforename Miles Bull gentle man or his assignes and alsoe one hoppgarden wch my late deceased husband Thomas Hovenden did purchase to him his heires and assignes of one John Benchkyn gentleman To haue and to hould the same and every perte thereof vnto the said Sara Baker and the heires of her body lawfully to bee begotten and after and for default of such heires I will the said messuage gardens Orchards hoppgardens and premisses and euery parte and parcel thereof with thappurtenances shalbe and remaine unto the Right heires of me the said Sara Hovenden for euer In witnes whereof to this my last will and testament I haue sett my hand and Seale dated the day and yeare first abouewritten The marke of Sara Hovenden Read published Subscribed and Sealed in the presence of John Ladd Thomas Milles.

1628 An abstract of the will of Sarah Hovenden, dated 8 June 1628, and proved 28 September 1635 in the Consistory Court of Canterbury, provides information about several relationships in the Sayer and Omer families." [7]

Sententiae 19 Dec. 1635, to confirm the will, between Stephen Sare, brother and ex'or, on one part, and Eliz. Sare al's Omer, widow sister of decd, Alice Saire al's Norwood, dau. of Tho. Saire decd, who was brother of testatrix, and Wm Sayre and Ann Saire "p'les nales et l'timas" of Wm Sayre decd, brother of the testatrix on the other part."

1635 "Sarah Houenden widowe" was buried on September 18 in St Andrew, Canterbury. [8]
