Notes for Roger Omer and Elizabeth Sayer

Roger Omer went to the Isle of Thanet where he and his wife Elizabeth Sayer had six children: Thomas, Elizabeth, Roger, Joan, Sarah, and Richard baptized in 1602, 1605, 1608, 1611, 1620, and 1622, respectively. Each of them except the first is named in Elizabeth's will in 1652 as her son or daughter and in Roger's will in 1634 as his son or daughter. The oldest son, Thomas, is mentioned in the 1614 will of Elizabeth's father Nicholas Sayer who also mentions the other children who had been born by that time but not in the will, dated June 17, 1623, of Roger's brother, Thomas, who leaves bequests to the other children. Roger's 1634 will discusses the maintenance of his two young children Richard and Sarah and makes bequests to them when they reach age 21 (Richard) and 18 (Sarah).

1602 "Thomas filius Rogeri Omer" was baptized on August 29 in St Mary the Virgin, Minster in Thanet. [1]

1604/05 "Elizabetha filia Rogeri Omer" was baptized on February 10 in St Mary the Virgin, Minster in Thanet. [2]

1607/08 "Rogerus filius Rogeri Omer" was baptized on February 21 in St Mary the Virgin, Minster in Thanet. [3]

1610/11 "Joanna filia Rogeri Omer" was baptized on January 27 in St Mary the Virgin, Minster in Thanet. [4]

1615 On Sept 11, Roger Omer and Geoffrey Sandwell signed, as Assistants, a Terrier describing the possessions of the Parsonage and Vicarage of Minster in Thanet. [5]

1620 "Sara filia Rogeri Omer" was baptized on October 1 in St Mary the Virgin, Minster in Thanet. [6]

1622 "Ricardus filius Rogeri Omer" was baptized on September 29 in St Mary the Virgin, Minster in Thanet. [7]

1632 "In 1632 the largest ratepayers in Minster were Stephen Hunt (401 acres), John Turner (383), Edward Harnett (383), Wm. Skinner (371), Daniel Pamflett (281), Roger Omer (248), and Ed. Fuller (229)." [8]

1634 Roger Omer wrote his will on April 23. [9]

In the name of God Amen the 23: day of Aprill in the tenth yeare of the reigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles by the Grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland Kinge Defender of the faith etc 1634 I Roger Omer of the parish of Minster in the Isle of Thanett in the County of Kent yeoman beeinge of good and perfect memory thankes bee to God doe make my last will and testament in manner and form followinge First I bequeath my soule vnto Allmighty God my Creator hopeing assuredly thorough the death and meritts of Jesus Christ to have remission of all my sinnes and a glorious resurrection For my body I will the same in decent and Christianlike manner to bee buryed at the discretion of my executrix heereafter named Item I doe will and bequeath amongst the poore people of the parish of Minster aforesaid the summe of twenty shillinges to be distributed amongst them within one month after my decease Item I give vnto Roger Omer my sonne the somme of tenn pounds to bee paid him within halfe a yeare after my decease Item I give vnto my sonne Rogers first childe lawfully begotten if it happen to bee a sonne the summe of five pounds if it bee a daughter but three pounds to bee paid within one whole yeare after my decease if it shall bee then liveinge Item I give vnto my sonne Richard Omer in respect and in satisfaction of a legacy of ten pounds given him by his Uncle Thomas Omer the full somme of forty pounds to bee paid vnto hime at his age of one and twenty yeares Item I give vnto my daughter Joane now wife of Roger Laminge the summe of forty five pounds to bee paid within halfe a yeare after my decease Item I give vnto her first childe if it bee a sonne the summe of three pounds if it bee a daughter but forty shillinges to bee paid within one whole yeare after my decease if it bee then liveinge Item I give vnto my daughter Sarah Omer the summe of two hundredd pounds to bee paid vnto her at her age of eighteene yeares or at her day of marriadge which shall first happen Item I give vnto Roger Toddy my grandchild and god sonne the some of five pounds to bee paid within one whole year after me decease if hee shallbee then liveinge Item I give vnto Richard Toddy one other of my grand children the summe of three pounds to bee paid vnto him within one whole yeare after my decease if hee shll bee then liveinge Item I give vnto Elizabeth Toddy my grandchilde the summe of forty shillinges to bee paid vnto her within one whole yeare after my decease if shee shall then bee liveinge Item I give vnto my daughter Elizabeth Toddy the summe of forty shillinges to bee paid with in one whole yeare after my decease All the reidue of my goods moveable cattell and chattells my debts and legaces beeing paid I give vnto Elizabeth my wife whom I doe ordayne and appounte to bee sole executrix of this my last will and testament revokeinge all former wills by mee made And as touching the disposinge of all the lands tenements and hereditaments which now by the providence of God I am now possessed of an the rents yssues and profittes of the same This is the testament and last will of mee the said Roger Omer made and declared the day and yeare aforesaid vizt: my messuage or mansion house at West Northdowne in the parish of St: John the Baptist in the Isle and County aforesaid with all the edifises buildings and appurtenances thereto appurtayninge together with those forty acres of land more of less to the said messuage belonginge and appertayning with thappurtenances Also all those my lands tenements and messuages with theire appurtenances severally scituat lyeinge and beeinges in the parish of Ash next Sandwich in the County aforesaid And also my messuage or tenement land and apputenances thereto appertayninge scituate lyeinge and beeinge in the parish of Minster aforesaid and every of them I will and bequeath vnto my sonne Richard Omer and to the heires of his body lawfully begotten forever to bee had and held vnto him and them imediatly after the decease of Elizabeth my now wife And if it shall happen the said Richard my sonne dye without heires of his body lawfully begotten and before hee attayne to the age of one and twenty yeares Then I dispose and will the said severall messuages lands and tenements as followeth First touchinge that messuage or tenement at West Northdowne with the edifices & those forty acres of lands with thappurtenances thereto belonging I give the same unto Sarah Omer my daughter to bee had and held to her and her heires imediatly after the death of my now wife Elizabeth And as touching one tenement and seaven acres of land in the parish of Ash aforesaid now in the occupation of one Richard Lott the same with all the appurtenances I will and bequeath unto my sonne Roger Omer to bee had and held to him and his heires after the decease of my said wife And as touchinge one other of the siad tenements before bequeathed vnot him the said Richard with eight acres of land thereto appertayninge with thappurtenances now in the occupation of John Heirs in Ash aforesaid The same I will and bequeath vnto my daughter Elizabeth now wife of Edward Toddy to bee had and held to her & her heires imediatly after the death of my said wife As touching the other of y said Tenements in Ash aforesaid with two acres and a halfe of lands by estimation more or lesse now in the occupation of one Batholmiew Hatch and that my tenement in Minster aforesaid now in the occupation of Thomas Carpenter with one acre and a halfe o land more or lesse with all and every thappurtenances to the said tow tenements appertayning them I will and bequeath to my daughter Joane now wife of Roger Laminges to bee had and held to her and her heires after the decease of my wife as aforesaid And my will and meaninge is that my siad wife Elizabeth shall receive and take all rents yssues and profetts of all and singule my lands and tenements with all thappurtenances begore severally bequathed for and during her naturall lie for and towds the mayntenance and good education of my tow gounge Chilren Richard and Sarah the said Elizabeth my wie maytaining and deepinge all and every the said messuages edifices and buildings in good and sufficient reparacons from time to time duringe her said terme of life Provided that if my said wife bee lifeing after my said lonne Richard hath attayned to the age or one and twenty yeares my will and meaninge is that my sai wife shall pay vnto my said sonne Richard towards his mayntenance the sum of fifteene pounds a yeare out of all my lands and 1634 "Rogerus Omer domest." was buried on November 23 in St Mary the Virgin, Minster in Thanet, Kent, England. [10]

1634 The will of Roger Omer was proved on December 17 in the Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury. [11]

1652 The will of Elizabeth Omer, of St. John the Baptist (Margate), Thanet, widow of Roger Omer, of Minster, Thanet, Kent, was dated 12 October 1652. Elizabeth named her daughters Joan (wife of Roger Laming) and Sarah (wife of William Chapman), the children (Roger, Elizabeth, Richard, Nicholas, and Mary, surname Taddie) of her daughter Elizabeth, her Laming grandchildren (Elizabeth, Nicholas, Richard and Joan), the daughter (unnamed) of her son Roger, and her son Richard (sole executor and residual legatee). Roger Taddie and the unnamed daughter of Roger were over age 21 at the time of the will but the other grandchildren were under age 21. [12] [13]

In the name of God Amen The Twelveth day of October in the yeare of our Lord one thousand sixe hundred fiftie and two I Elizabeth Omer of the parish of St John the Baptist in the Isle of Thannett in the County of Kent Widd. Relicte of Roger Omer late of the parish of Minster in the sayd Isle being of good and perfect memory thankes be to God doe make my last will and Testament in manner and forme following First I bequeath my soule vnto Allmighty God my Creator hopeing assuredly through the death and meritts of Jusus Christ who is God blessed forever to have remission of all my sinnes and eternall life An I will my body to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereunder named Item I will and bequeath twenty shillings vnto such poore people of the sayd parishes of St John the Baptist and Minster as my Executors hereunder named shall thinke to have most neede to be paid within ten dayes after my decease in either parish and the the Ministers of the sayd parishes witnesseth the payment thereof their testimony shall be sufficient Item I will that my Executors hereunder named shall pay vnto my daughter Joane the wife of Roger Laminge the summe of twenty shillings of lawfull English money to bee paid within three moneths after my decease Item I will and bequeath vnto my daughter Sarah the wife of William Chapman the summe of sixe pounds by the year That is to say three pounds every half year during her natural life by my Executors hereunder named to be paid and that my sayd Executers hereafter named shall pay my two last mentioned legacies into the hands of my sayd daughter Joane and daughter Sarah according as I have bequeathed them And that their acquittance or proofe that hee hath paid it to them shall e sufficient in tne lawe And my will is ghat the husbands of my sayd daughter or either of them shall not have anything to doe with the payment or receipt of the sayd moneys to my sayd daughters by me bequeathed as aforesayd Item I will and bequeath unto my Grandchild Roger Taddie elder to me of my daughter Elizabeth the summe of fiftie shillings to be paid by my Executor hereafter named within sixe moneths after my decease and I sill and bequeth vnto my Grandshild Elizabeth Taddie sister of the sayd Roger Taddie the summe of fiftie shillings to be paid by my Executor hereafter named when shee shall accomplish the age of one and Twenty yeares And I will and bequeath unto Richard Taddie and Nicholas Taddie naturall sonnes of my aforesayd daughter Elizabeth to each of the the summe of Twenty shillings to be paid unto them by my Executor hereafter named when each of them shall accomplisht the age of fower and twenty yeares And I will and bequeath vnto Mary Taddie my Grandchild daughter of my sayd daughter Elizateth the summe of twenty shillings to bee paid by Executor hereafter named when shee shall accomplish the age of one and twentie yeares Item I will and bequeath vnto the daughter of my sonne Roger Omer Five shillings to be paid by my Executor hereafter named within sixe moneths after my deceaase Item I will and bequeath vnto my Grandhild Nicholas Laming sonne of Roger Laming the summe of twenty shillings to be paid by my Executor hereafter named when hee shall Accomplish the age of Fower and twenty yeares And to my Grandchild Elizabeth Laming daughter of the sayd Roger the summe of twentie shillings when shee shall accomplish the age of fower and twenty yeares to be paid by my Executor hereafter named And I bequeath vnto Richard Laming soone of the sayd Roger Laming the sume of twenty shillings by Executor hereafter named to him to be paid when hee shall accomplish the aged of fower and twenty yeares And I bequeath vnto Joane Laminge daughter of the sayd Roger the summe of twenty shillings by my Executor hereafter named to her to be paid when shee shall accomplish the age of Fower and twentie yeares Iteim after my debts paid and discharged and my funerall expences discharded I will and bequeath unto Richard Omer my soone whome I hereby ordayne and appointe my sole Executor to this my last will and Testamet, All the residue of my Estate both reall and personall which is not heretofore in this my last will bequeathed revokeing all former wills and testaments what soever before by mee made and ordayned In wittnes whereof I have vnto this y last will and Testament contayning one sheete of paper set my had seale the day and yeare first written The marke of Elizabeth Omer signed sealed and subscribed in the presense of Fra: Cory Serip(?) John Collard.

1653 The will of Elizabeth Omer was proved on May 5 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury with adminstration grnted to Richard Omer, her son and sole executor named. [14] [15]
