It might be difficult to distinguish, in some of the Hempstead town records, father Joseph Mott Sr from this Joseph Mott, married to Deborah Mott; and from nephew Joseph Mott, son of brother Jacob Mott;

1745 On 22 April, the ear marks of Jacob Mott, son of Joseph, and of Joseph, son of Jacob, and of Isaac Mott, son of Jacob, were registered. The mark registered by Joseph, son of Jacob, was a latch ye foreside of ye off ear and a half flower Deluce ye fore side of ye near ear, the same as that registered by Joseph Mott in 1751, which differs from the mark registered by Joseph Mott Jr in 1722 regarding whether the half penny mark was on the same or the other ear from the latch.

1751 On 26 March, "The Ear Mark of Joseph Mott Is a Latch the fore Side of the oft Ear & a half penny the fore Side the Near Ear It being the Mark formely of Thomas Jackson & bought of his Ex'tors. Entered ye 26th Day of March 1751". [14]
