Notes for John Showalter and Mary Good

1769 Mary Good was named as a daughter of Christian Good in a deed between her mother, Magdalena, and her oldest brother, John. [1]

Mary Good married John Showalter. [2]

1789 Mary, the deceased wife of John Showalter, was listed as an heir of Christian Good, deceased, in Lancaster County Orphans Court records dated August 5. [3]

1790 John Showalter lived in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in a household with 2 males under age 16, 3 males age 16 and over, and 3 females. [4]

1791 Christian and Anna Showalter granted land to their son John Showalter, all of Earl Twp, Lancaster County. [5]

1792 The will of John Showalter (senior), of Earl Twp, Lancaster County, was dated August 10. The will named wife Jane who received several items in lieu of her dower. Daughter Elizabeth was under age 18. They could live on the plantation for a year after John's death. Son John was to inherit the plantation on April, a year after the death of John (senior). If neither son John or Joseph chose to purchase the plantation then it was to be sold at auction. The estate was to be divided among four sons John, Joseph, Christian, and Isaac Showalter, if they arrive to age 21 or have lawful issue. The two younger sons were to be put to learning and to a trade of their choice. Wife Jane, friend George Ryne, and son John were named as executors. In a codicil, John Showalter (senior) arranged for a graveyard. [6]

1792 John Showalter died on August 31 at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and was buried at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Cemetery, Martindale, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. John Showalter was born on September 30, 1742. [7] [8]

John was first married to Maria Good (ca. 1746-bef. 1779), daughter of immigrant Christian Good of Brecknock Township. In two 1769 deeds related to the settlement of Christian's estate (LL-252 and II-580), Maria was single. She probably married John Showalter shortly afterward but died before 1779 as by then John was married to Jane Good, daughter of William Good (Lancaster County will D-1-78). In the final distribution of the estate of Christian Good, Maria was identified as the deceased wife of John Showalter (Orphans Court record, Aug. 5, 1789).
