Notes for John Henry Thoman and Anna Nancy Motter

"Henry Thoman, Canfield township, Mahoning county, was born in York county, Pennsylvania, in 1790. He learned shoemaking when a young man, though he has followed farming principally. He married Mary Marter who died in 1860, having borne ten children, viz: Harriet, Daniel, Catharine, Lewis, Henry, Margaret, Isaac, Samuel, Jesse, and Amanda. Six are living, - Lewis in Kansas; Harriet Grouse in Crawford county; Catharine Morris and Margaret Wining in Columbiana county; Samuel and Amanda Heintzelman in Canfield township. Mr Thoman is now passing the evening of his ripe old age at the home of his son Samuel. The family came to Beaver township, Mahoning county, in 1828. In 1877 Mr Thoman and his son Samuel moved to Canfield. Samuel Thoman was born in Beaver township in 1833. He has followed a variety of occupations, having been a carpenter, a tinner, a millwright, a merchant, and a farmer, by turns. He has also resided in what is now Mahoning county. In 1854 he married Elizabeth Heintzelman, of Beaver township. They have had six children: Ora, Alice, Alvin, Viola, Melvin, Cora L, and an infant daughter. Ora, Alice, Melvin, and the youngest are deceased. The family belong to the Reformed church." [1]

1858 On 21 July, Anna F Nancy Thoman (born 7 October 1794), wife of Henry Sr, died at age 63y 9m 14d and was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Mahoning County, Ohio. [2]

1885 On 17 February, John Henry Thoman (born Jul. 23, 1792) died at age 93y 5m 6d and was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Mahoning County, Ohio. [3]

Research Notes:

Henry Thoman served in War of 1812 from Sep 1, 1812 until Oct. 9, 1814. In 1823, the family moved to Adams County, Pennsylvania; in 1826 to Frederick County, Maryland; in 1831 to Columbus, Ohio. Both are buried at Paradise Reformed Church Cemetery in New Buffalo, Mahoning County, Ohio.
