Notes for Isaac Ivins and Hannah Tilton

1776 Isaac Ivins, Jr. and Hannah Tilton declared their intentions of marriage to the Chesterfield Monthly Quaker Meetings of 7 - 3 Month, 1776 and 4 - 4 month, 1776. The records of the 2-5 month, 1776 reporting the marriage having been accomplished. [1] [2]

1782 Isaac Ivins Sr was named as executor for the estate of William Davis of Hanover Twp, Burington County, if dead within 12 years, then Isaac Ivins Jr and if both of them are dead, then Barzillae Ivins. [3]

1783 Isaac Ivins, of Chesterfield Twp, Burlington County, purchased land from Richard Kirby and wife Hannah. Dated April 12, 1783. Richard and Hannah had inherited the land from Benjamin Cheshire, by Burlington will 2C-4, dated September 30, 1740. Benjamin Cheshire had purchased the land from his father John Cheshire on March 16, 1735. [4]

1785 William Stevenson complained at Chesterfield Meeting that Isaac Ivins Jr neglected to pay a debt owed. Dated 8 of month 11. [5]

1788 A folded document had two titles (with different handwritings): "Ivins Joseph Account 1788" (in a different handwriting) and "The petition of Isaac Ivins to be appointed guardian of his children" (in the same handwriting as the petition). The petition (missing writing on the left of the page) named Isaac Ivins, son of Isaac Ivins and referred to a will dated 8th month 1786 which bequeathed the residue ... divided among his children and grand-children: ... your petitioner (Isaac) hath six children namely Barzillai, ... abeth, Mary, Margaret, and Ann, all minors under fourteen years, and who are entitled to a division by ... said bequest. Dated 1789. The writing on the petition matches the faint mirror-image writing visible on the opposite, titled, side of the document, proving that the titles are on the back of the petition. A typed document names Barzillai, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, and Ann Ivins. This document does not match either the date or the heirs named in the 1782 will of Joseph Ivins. The children named in this document match the children of Isaac Ivins (1755-1814), son of Isaac Ivins, whose will was dated August (8th month), 1786. [6] We suspect that this document is a petition by Isaac Ivins Jr to be named guardian of the estates that his own children inherited from their grandfather, Isaac Ivins, and that this document has been incorrectly filed and labeled as part of the estate of Joseph Ivins.

1788 Isaac Ivins, of Nottingham, New Jersey, and wife Hannah, sold a plantation to Abel Middleton on March 29. Isaac Ivins had purchased the plantation, which was 117 acres in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County, from Robert Hutchinson. [7]

1789 At the November term of the Burlington County Orphans Court, Isaac Ivins petitioned to be appointed guardian of his minor children under the age of fourteen: Barzillai, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, and Ann Ivins. He was appointed guardian until they achieved age 14 upon posting of bond. [8]

1790 Isaac Ivins placed a newspaper advertisement, dated December 28, that "he will apply to the State Supreme Court to remedy the loss the deeds to a lot of 12 acres in Chesterfield Twp, Burlington County, which were destroyed by the devastation of the British army in 1776. The lot was then the property of Isaac Ivins now deceased [see 1784 entry in father Isaac Ivin's notes] and was devised by him to the subscriber. The lot was bounded on lands of Joseph Borden Esq. and Col. Okey Hoagland." [9]

1790 Isaac Ivins and family moved from Chesterfield meeting to Salem meeting on 4 of month 5. Certificate from Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, held the 7th of the 2 mo 1792 to the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Salem: "Whereas Isaac Ivins and Hannah his wife together with their children, namely Barzillai, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, Ann and Hannah, they being in their minority, who hath removed to live within the verge of your meeting, These may certify they have a right of membership amongst us and on inquiry we find their lives and conversations hath been in good degree orderly and often attended our Religious Meetings for worship and discipline, and Isaac hath settled his outward affairs to satisfaction as far as appears. As such we recommend them to your Christian care and oversight." [Register of Salem Monthly Mtg., Salem, NJ] [10] [11] [12]

1790-96 Isaac Ivins was named on the tax lists of Woolwich Twp, Gloucester County, New Jersey. [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] [28]

1791 Isaac Ivins neglected to comply with his contract with Josiah Robins. Dated 15 of month 12. [29]

1793 Isaac Ivins Junior was received on certificate from Upper Springfield, New Jersey at the Falls Quaker Monthly Meeting. [30]

1805 The account of the estate of Isaac Ivins [spouse of Mary Hopkins] named his 32 living children and grand-children, including this son Isaac Ivins, and his grand-children: Barzillai, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, and Ann as children of this son Isaac. [31]

1807 Isaac Ivins, Uriah French (husband of daughter Mary, perhaps), and Samuel Ellis purchased furniture from Isaac Morgan of Woolwich, Gloucester County on December 12. [32]

1808 Isaac Ivins of Woolwich Twp, Gloucester County recovered 3 acres of land of John Hutchinson in Woolwich Twp as payment for a debt due. [33]

1814 Barzillai and Thomas Ivins of Salem County were appointed administrators for the estate of Isaac Ivins, late of Salem County, New Jersey on April 19. [34]

1814 The estate of Isaac Ivins of Pittsgrove Twp, Salem County, New Jersey was valued at $2,961.59 on April 29 by Eleazer Mayhew and Samuel Cawley. It was affirmed by Barzillai and Thomas Ivins, administrators on September 20. [35]

1814 Uriah French and wife Mary, late Mary Ivins, petitioned the Gloucester County Orphans Court, on October 3, concerning the estate of Isaac Ivins, late of Gloucester County. The petition named heirs Barzilla Ivins, Thomas Ivins, Elizabeth I Chatten wife of Clark Chattam, Ann Curry wife of Wm Curry, the said Mary French, and Sarah Ivins children of the said Isaac Ivins, and Hannah French daughter of Hannah French one of the children of Isaac Ivins, who hold the real estate as tennants in common. [36]

1814 The Orphans' Court of Salem County appointed commissioners for the division of the real estate of Isaac Ivins, decd., in the county of Salem in Sept.

1815 The division of the real estate of Isaac Ivins, deceased Salem county, New Jersey named his heirs and described his estate [37] [38].

In pursuance of a Decree of the Orphans Court of the County of Salem made in the term of September last part, appointing us the subscribers, Commissioners for Dividing the real estate late of Isaac Ivins, Deceased in the County of Salem... between Barzilla Ivins, Thomas Ivins, Mary French, wife of Uriah French, Elizabeth Chatten, wife of Clark Chatten, Ann Curry, wife of William Curry, Sarah Ivins and Hannah French, daughter of Hannah French, wife of Samuel French, his heirs at Law, one of them being a minor under the age of 21 years, we do report to the Judges of the said Orphans Court that we have made division of the said real estate Between the said (repeats names above) according to the Act entitled an Act to alter the Law Directing the Descent of real estate passed 24th of May 1780 and have ascertained each one's share by metes and bounds as followeth.

#1 Set off to Barzilla Ivins and Mary French, wife of Uriah French, Situate part in the Township of Pittsgrove and part in the Township of Pilesgrove in the County of Salem and Begins at a Maple for a corner, standing on the side of a branch commonly called Oldmans Creek, being the line between the county of Gloucester and said county of Salem and not far below the Saw Mill and head of the Grist Mill pond, and running from thence, bounding by the allotment set off to Thomas Ivins, S 10 ch to a Stake for Corner. Then by lands of Josiah Miller and part by lands late of Isaac Harvey, deceased, and running N 63 deg W 42 ch and 87 lx to a stake for a corner set in the Grist Mill pond. Then still by Hansey's (sic- Harvey?) land and running S 66 deg and 30"W 39 ch and 25 lx to a Stone for a corner. Thence by lands of Samuel Morgan and running N 44 degrees W 36 ch and 22 lx to a Hickory tree for a corner standing by side of the road. Thence along said road and bounding by lands of Samuel Riley and running N 75 degrees E 20 ch to a stake. Thence still by said Riley'S land N 29 deg E 7 ch and 70 lx to a red oak tree for a corner to the allotment set off to Elizabeth Chatten, wife of Clark Chatten. Thence by same N 58 deg E 55 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same N 60 Deg 25 ch to a White Oak tree for a corner. Thence still by same N 11 Deg E 5 ch and 75 lx to the aforesaid Creek and County line. Thence up the same and bounding thereon ? to the place of beginning. Containing by Computation 138 acres of land, Mill pond, swamp and meadow ground, being the same more or less.

#2 Unto Thomas Ivins we have assigned that allotment marked No. 2 on the map, situate in the Township of Pittsgrove in Salem county; Beginning at a maple, being the beginning corner to the allotment set off to Barzilla Ivins and Mary French. Thence bounding by same S 10 chs to a stake for a corner. Thence by lands of Josiah Miller, and part by the allotment set off to Ann Curry, wife of William Curry and running S 63 deg E 36 ch to a Black oak for a corner. Thence by lands late of Benjamin Cheasman (sic Cheeseman) deceased and part by lands of Frederick Dennelsbeck and running S 16 deg and 30" E 30 ch and 20 lx to a black oak for a corner. Thence by lands of Jeremiah Wood and running S 83 deg E 25 ch and 30 lx to a branch commonly called Kittle run. Thence down the same bounding by the natural water course thereof to a corner to lands survey to and leased to QuartCommense (Zuarh?) on a straight line about 26 ch. Thence bounding still by Quart'(?) land, N 66 deg E 3 ch and 50 lx to a stake for a corner Thence still by same S 83 deg E 8 ch and 50 lx to a stone for a corner to the allotment set off to Hannah French, daughter of Hannah French, wife of Samuel French. Thence by the same and running N 9 deg W 46 ch and 50 lx to the Creek and County line. Then down the same bounding thereon ? to the place of beginning. Containing by Computation 230 acres of Land, swamps and Mill pond, be the same more or less.

#3 On the map this lot includes the Pine Tavern, (see the entry after #8) but the written description jumps out of order to the next allotments.

#4 Unto Elizabeth Chatten, wife of Clark Chatten, we have assigned and set off in severalty the lots marked No. 4, 5, and 6 on the map. The first of which (#4) is situate in the Township of Pilesgrove, Salem county. Beginning at a stake for corner to the allotment set off to Barzilla Ivins and Mary French, wife of Uriah French, at the Creek and County line and running thence S 11 deg W 5 ch and 75 lx to a white oak. Then still by the allotment set off to Barzilla Ivins and Mary French and running S 60 deg. E 5 ch to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same, S 58 deg W 50 lx to a red Oak tree marked for a corner to lands of Samuel Riley. Thence by said Riley's land N 60 deg W 34 ch and 25 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same N 9 deg E ch and 10 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same N 78 deg 19 ch and 20 lx to the aforesaid Creek and County line. Thence up the same ? to the place of beginning. Containing by Computation 103 acres of land, swamp and meadow ground be the same more or less.

#5 Situate in Pittsgrove Twp. County of Salem, and commonly designated as the Wig Lane property and bounded as follows: Beginning at a stone for a corner to lands of Jeremiah Wood and at the cross of the roads. Thence along the road and bounding by lands of John Kelsey and Samuel Johnson, N 72 deg E 9 ch and 50 lx to a stone for a corner. Thence still by said Johnson's land N 16 deg W 4 ch and 78 lx to a black oak tree for a corner. Thence still by same N 72 deg E 5 ch to a black oak for a corner. Thence N 22 deg W 6 ch and 5 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence by lands of Henry Richman S 72 deg W 11 ch and 10 lx to a stake for a corner in the road. Thence along said road and running S 12 Deg @ 11 ch to the place of beginning. Containing by Computation 12 acres and 88/100ths of an Acre of land, be the same more or less.

#6 Situate in the Township of Pittsgrove in the County of Salem aforesaid and is commonly called the Burgan Ayars place and bounded as follows. Beginning at a stone for a corner and running from thence bounding by lands of John Abbot, S 15 deg E 7 ch and 8 lx to a corner. Thence N 74 Deg 30" E 4 ch to a corner. Thence S 15 deg E 5 ch and 67 lx to a Corner. Thence S 74 deg and 30" W 25 ch to a Corner. Thence N 15 deg. W 7 ch and 75 lx to a corner. Thence still by lands of RobertAyars S 74 deg and 30" W 51 ch and 75 lx to a corner in Thomas Parvin's line. Thence by the same N 15 deg. W 3 ch and 50 lx to a Walnut tree for a corner. Thence still by Parvin's land and running N 74 deg and 30 min E 11 ch and 4 lx to a walnut tree for a corner. Thence still by same N 15 deg W 2 ch to a walnut tree for a corner. Thence still by Parvin's land and running N 74 deg and 30" E 61 ch and 71 lx to the place of beginning. Containing by Computation 35 acres of land and Premises, be the same more or less.

#7. To Ann Curry, wife of William Curry, we have assigned the allotment marked No. 7 on the map. Situate in Pittsgrove Twp, Salem county and commonly called the Newburn, Carney and Downey lands, and is bounded as follows: Beginning at a black oak tree marked for a corner to lands formerly belonging to Frederick Dennelsbeck, deceased, and running by the same S 72 deg and 30" W 24 ch and 84 lx to a black oak for a corner. Thence S 16 deg and 30" E 21 ch and 22 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence bounding by lands of Frederick Dennelsbeck S 72 deg and 30" W 14 ch and 16 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same and part of lands of John Dennelsbeck and running S 16 deg and 30 min # 23 ch and 66 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence by lands of Jeremiah Wood and Henry Richman, S 72 deg and 30 " W 25 ch and 70 lx to a stake for a corner in the line of the allotment set off to Sarah Ivins. Thence by the same N 16 deg and 30 " E 5 ch and 25 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same N 70 deg. W 2 ch and 62 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same N 20 deg E 15 ch to a stake in the middle of the road. Thence along said road S. 66 deg and 30" E 1 ch and 70 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by the allotment set off to Sarah Ivins and running N 16 deg and 30"E 10 ch to a walnut tree for a corner. Thence still by the same N 68 deg W 1 ch to a stake for a corner. Thence still by the same N 10 deg W 3 ch and 24 lx to a small hickory for a corner. Thence by lands late of Benjamin Cheasman, Dec'd. N 84 deg E 9 ch and 86 lx to an apple tree for a corner. Thence still by Cheasman'S land N 16 deg and 30 min W 20 ch and 10 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by Cheasman'S land S 72 deg and 30" W 9 ch to a stake for a corner. Thence N 14 deg W 6 ch to a maple for a corner. Thence N 53 deg E 31 ch and 50 lx to a stake for a corner set in the line of the allotment set off to Thomas Ivins. Thence by the same and running S 63 deg E 28 ch and 50 lx to the place of beginning. Containing by Computation 158 acres of land, be the same more or less.

#8 To Sarah Ivins we have set off allotment marked No.8 on the map and is bounded as follows: Beginning at a stake for a corner and running from thence by lands formerly belonging to Samuel Garrison, Deceased S 28 deg W 36 ch to a stake for a corner. Thence S 68 deg E 16 ch and 75 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence S 22 deg W 6 ch to a stake for a corner. Thence S 68 deg E 15 ch to a stake for a corner. Thence N 16 deg and 30" E 16 ch to a stake for a corner. Thence by the allotment set off to Ann Curry, wife of William Curry and running N 70 deg W 2 ch and 62 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same N 20 deg # 15 ch to a stake in the middle of the road. Thence along said road S 66 deg. And 30"E 1 ch and 70 lx to a stake for a corner. Thence still by the allotment set of to Ann Curry, and running N 16 deg and 30" E 10 ch to a walnut tree for a corner. Thence still by same N 68 deg W 1 ch to a stake for a corner. Thence still by same N 10 deg W 3 ch and 24 lx to a small hickory for a corner. Thence by lands late of Benjamin Cheasman, Deceased, and running N 68 deg W 23 ch and 34 lx to the place of beginning. Containing by computation 100 acres of land and premises, be the same more or less.

#3 (Pine Tavern lot) Unto Hannah French, daughter of Hannah French, wife of Samuel French, we have assigned and set off the allotment marked No.3 bounded as follows: Beginning at a stake for a corner set in a branch of Oldmans Creek, being the boundary line between the Counties of Salem and Gloucester and running thence bounding by land of Robert Ayars and others, S 3 deg and 30" E 39 ch and 75 lx to a white oak for a corner. Thence S 87 deg E 6 chains and 62 lx to a turkey oak for a corner. Thence S 3 deg and 30 min E 9 ch and 50 lx to a down white oak for a corner. Thence N 76 deg E 23 ch and 61 lx to a pine for a corner. Thence S 15 deg and 30" E 16 ch and 40 lx to a stake for corner. Thence by land of Thomas Hutchinson and running S 89 deg W 60 ch and 25 lx to a black oak tree marked for a corner. Thence by lands late of John Kindle deceased and running 83 deg W 28 ch and 90 lx to a stone for a corner to lands surveyed and leased to Quart Commency and being also a corner to the allotment of land set off to Thomas Ivins, Thence by same running N 9 deg W 46 ch and 50 lx to the creek and county line Thence up same and bounding thereon to the beginning. Containing by computation 350 acres of land, swamp and cripple, being the same more or less.

1823 Hannah Ivins, widow of Isaac Ivins late of the township of Pittsgrove, Salem County, New Jersey, sold land to her son Barzillai Ivins, of Woolwich Twp, Gloucester County. The 40 acre tract included a grist mill and fulling mill in Woolwich Twp, Gloucester County. The deed was recorded on June 22. [39]

1823 Hannah Ivins, widow of Isaac Ivins late of the township of Pittsgrove, Salem County, New Jersey, sold land to her son Thomas Ivins, of Woolwich Twp, Gloucester County. The 137 acre tractor parcel included a saw mill and water works in Woolwich Twp, Gloucester County. The deed was recorded on June 22. [40]

Research Notes:

1779 Isaac Ivins Jr, perhaps this one, acknowledged having signed as an associator and having paid fines in lieu of personal services in the war. Chesterfield minutes. [41] [42]

1781 Isaac Ivins acted on a jury to confiscate estates and paid a tax in support of the war and neglected meetings at Chesterfield. [43] [44]
