1786 On a survey of an adjacent tract, Jacob Meals [Mails] was shown as the owner of a tract near one that his father-in-law, Jacob Bender, had warranted in 1773, now owned by Jacob's brother-in-law, Henry Bender. [Photocopy, 1786 survey Map for tract adjacent to Jacob Meals.]

1786-91 Jacob Meals owned a tract of land that was originally warranted to John Mickle in 1742 and that was later owned by Gabriel Meals in 1839. The tract is now in Butler Twp, shown on an 1858 map where Wm Cashman lived on the road to Bender's Church. [29]

1742 John Mickle received a warrant for land in Menallen Twp, York County, down the Big Conewago Creek. [30] A survey made in 1838 showed the tract owned by Jacob Mails and Samuel Mickle. [31] A survey of an adjacent tract made in 1786 showed Jacob Mails as the owner. [32] Jacob's father-in-law, Jacob Bender owned a tract nearby in 1773. [33]

1791 The tract was shown as divided and owned by Jacob Mails and Samuel Mickel. [34]

1839 The tract that John Mickle had warranted in 1742 was divided for John Mickle, now owned by Gabriel Mails [perhaps Jacob's son] and for Samuel Mickle, now owned by heirs of John Duterow. [35]

1850 Solomon Meals (age 31) [Solomon, son of John Meals, was a grandson of Jacob Meals and Elizabeth Bender] and William Cushman and Henry Lower were listed near each other [see 1858 neighbors on map] in the census listing for Butler Twp, Adams County. [36]

1853 The tract was in Butler Twp, formerly Menallen Twp. The section previously owned by Meals was owned by Wm Cashman and Wm Toot. Wm Cashman was on the north side of a public road. Wm Galbreath was listed adjacent to the Mickle tract. [37]

1858 A map shows Wm Cashman east of Middletown (now Biglerville) and north of the Big Conewago Creek, on the north side of the road that leads to Benders Church. William Galbreath and Mariah Duterow owned land nearby. Henry Lower was nearby on the other side of the Conewago. [38]

1789 Johannes and Heinrich, sons of Jacob and Elisabetha Miell, were born on February 23. They were baptized on March 22 with sponsors Heinrich and Catarina Bennter at Bender's Church, Adams County, Pennsylvania. [43]

1789 Jacob Meals was taxed in Menallen Twp, York County for 118 acres, 2 horses, and 3 cattle. [44]

1790 Jacob Mails lived in Mixed Twp, York County, Pennsylvania, in a household with 5 males under age 16, 1 males age 16 and over, and 5 females. [45] Adjacent listings included the housholds of Henry and Michael Bender and Henry Snider, all possible relatives of Elizabeth.

1792 Jacob Mail was taxed for 118 acres in Menallen Twp, York County. [46] [47]

1798 Jacob Mihles was taxed in Menallen Twp for a 30 by 20 foot frame house, 1 kitchen, and 14 by 14 log structure [54]. He had a wagoner shop and a smith shop. Samuel Mickle lived adjacent. [55] [56]

1798-99 Jacob Mills, wagonmaker, was taxed on a value of $702 in Butler (Menallen) Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania. [57]

1800 Jacob Males lived in Menallen Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (under 10), 3 (10 thru 15), 2 (16 thru 25), and 1 (45 and over); and females: 1 (10 thru 15), 3 (16 thru 25), and 1 (45 and over). Frederick Wolf [grandfather-in-law of son Samuel], Michael Bender [perhaps Elizabeth Bender Meal's brother], and Henry Baltzly [father-in-law of son Samuel] were in households listed nearby. [58]

1806 David Meals and Samuel Meals were each taxed with 80 acres. Jacob was taxed with 120 acres. [62]

1808 Jacob Meals was taxed in Menallen Twp, Adams County for 120 acres. A note indicated he had sold land (160 acres) and a sawmill to his sons. David Meals was listed with 80 acres and a saw mill and Samuel Meals was listed with 80 acres. [63]

1810 Jacob Meals lived in Menallan Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 3 (16 thru 25), 1 (26 thru 44), and 1 (45 and over); and females: 2 (26 thru 44) and 1 (45 and over). [64] Son Samuel and David Meals, Henry Bender, Frederick Wolf, and Widow Balzly were also listed in Menallen Twp.

1820 Jacob Meals lived in Menallen Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (under 10), 1 (26 thru 44), and 1 (45 and over); and females: 1 (26 thru 44) and 1 (45 and over). [65] Sons David and Samuel Meals also lived in Menallen Twp, PA. Nearby listings included Henry Bender, Frederick Wolf, and widow Christina Balzly.

1826 Elizabeth Meals, wife of Jacob Meals, died on December 9 and was buried at Bender's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Biglerville, Butler Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania. [66] [67] [68]

1828 The land of Henry Rife, described as 22 acres of Mountain-land adjacent to the land of Jacob Meals and George Black in Menallen Twp, was sold by the sheriff after Henry Rife's decease. [69]

1830 Sons David (age 50-60), Gabriel (age 30-40), and Samuel (age 50-60) lived in Menallen Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania. John Meals (age 70-80) (perhaps Jacob's brother) and John Weigle Sr and Jr lived nearby. A George Knouse age 40-50 also lived in Menallen Twp (possibly a son-in-law). [US census, 1830]

1834 "Died Sept 19, 1834, Mr Jacob Meals Sr, Menallen Twp, Adams County, age 84 years. He had eaten a hearty dinner after which he lay down to sleep and in the evening it was discovered that he was insensible in which state he continued until his death." [70] [71]. 1834 Letters of administration were issued, on September 25, to Gabriel Meals for the estate of Jacob Meals in Adams County, Pennsylvania. [76]

1839 Jacob Meals, minor son of Jacob Meals, of Menallen Twp, deceased, petitioned the court to appoint Frederick Quickel as his guardian, since the previous guardian, John Quickel, had died. [80]

1840 Gabriel Meals made an account of the estate of Jacob Meals in Adams County. [81]

1840 George Knouse, spouse of Catharine Meals, one of the heirs of Jacob Meals, late of Menallen twp, petitioned the Orphans court, on April 27, to have the estate settled. [82]


1841 Samuel Fahnestock adjusted the account of Gabriel Meals for the estate of Jacob Meals.

1841 The Adams County Orphans Court ordered Gabriel Meals, administrator for the estate of Jacob Meals, to make a payment to Catharine Quickle [perhaps a relative of daughter Elizabeth]. A payment was made to George Knouse in right of his wife Elizabeth. Both dated November 22. [84]:

On application of Moses McClean Esq attorney for Catharine Quickle, the court awards a writ of Fieri Facias against Gabriel Meals administrator of the estate of Jacob Meals deceas'd for the sum of $31.25

1841 An auditor was appointed for the account of Gabriel Meals to the Orphan's Court on April 27. [85]

Research Notes:

Other researchers have named Samuel Meals and Charlotte Gyloy as the parents of this Jacob Meals, as do we. We seek documentation to support this possibility. We have found no such documentation.

1834 Several researchers incorrectly show a picture of the 1896 gravemarker for Jacob B Meals (a grandson of this Jacob) as evidence for the death of this Jacob Meals. We seek an image of the correct grave marker.

We seek documentation about the children of this couple.
