Notes for William R Schooley and Margaret Hutchinson

1850 Joseph Schooley (age 60) and Sarah Schooley (age 50) lived in Chesterfield Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey with children Caleb (age 28), William (age 25), Elizabeth (age 22), Mary A (age 20), Charles (age 17), Sarah J (age 16), and Franklin (age 12). [1] [2]

1856 Abraham T Schooley, William R Schooley, and Charles N Schooley, administrators of the estate of Joseph Schooley, made an inventory of the estate, presented to Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey [3]

1859 William R Schooley, of New Jersey, applied for a US passport. He was age 37, 5 feet 5½ inches tall, his forehead was high and broad, his eyes were hazel, his nose was straight, his mouth was medium, his chin was round, his hair was brown, his complexion was fair, and his face was oval. [4]

1859 William Schooley, farmer, returned to America on the ship Adelaide from Galway, Ireland. He was returning to New Jersey. [5]

1860 William Schooley (age 30), Charles N Schooley (age 27), Mary Ann Schooley (age 25) and Sarah Jane Schooley (age 23) lived with brother Caleb Schooley in Chesterfield Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey. Several had an estate valued at $3,500, perhaps inherited at the death of father Joseph Schooley. [6]

Perhaps William Schooley, in the notes above is the same as William Schooley in the notes below, although his age does not agree. Perhaps he became older when he registered for the draft. The ages agree again in the 1880 census.

1863 William R Schooley, broker, age 42, single, was registered for the draft at Bordentown, New Jersey. [7]

1870 William R Schooley (age 48, born in New Jersey) lived in Trenton Ward 2, Mercer County, New Jersey, in a household with Major Hutchinson (age 80), Hannah D Hutchinson (age 74), Naomi Hutchinson (age 52), Rosetta Hutchinson (age 22), Margaret Hutchinson (age 38), and others. William R Schooley's occupation was broker. Major Hutchinson's occupation was keeps boarders. [8] [9]

1875 William R Schooley (age 53, son of Jas. [sic, Jos.?] and Sarah Schooley) married Margretta Hutchinson (born 1839, daughter of Major and Hannah Hutchinson)[10] at Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey. [11] [12]

1880 William Schooly (age 50, born in New Jersey, married) and wife Margaret (age 41) lived in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey. They were boarders in the house of Hannah Hutchinson (age 88), with several of the same people as in the 1870 census. William Schooly's parents were both born in New Jersey. William Schooly was a banker. [13]

1885 William Schooley lived in Ward 5, Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey in a household with Lona and Rosella Hutchinson, William and Margaret Schooley (both age 20-60), Sarah Farrell, Louisa Ewing, Emma and Annie Kirby, John Philllips, Benjamin Harrison, William Prichard, John Philby, Lena Boulcan, and Annie Phillips. [14]

1896 William R Schooley, widowed, died on November 11, in Hamilton Twp, Mercer County, New Jersey. He was a broker. [15]

Research Notes:

Many other researchers name William R Schooley, son of Joseph Schooley and Sarah Tilton, as the spouse of Margaret Hutchinson. We do the same, although the ages of these two men disagree in records dated 1863-1875. Other researchers report William's death before 1887, or on November 3, 1879. We seek further evidence about this relationship. [16]
