Ludwig Bortner, May 15,1762-Dec.12,1815; m. Elizabeth Gantz, 0ct.24,1753-Sept.15,1820 or 1829; (vi) daughter of Henry Francis Gantz, 1722-1809, and Anna Margaret, his wife. Owned land in the Rockville valley, now including the former Geurne Glatfelter farm, and down to the Bortner homestead (formerly the J. Elvin Bortner farm.) When he died in 1815, he owned about 550 acres of land, valued at about $13.750. This land was divided among his two sons.and two sons-in law. The inventory and sale of his personal estate amounted to $3700, and included a clock which brought $30 and must have been a valued piece of furniture in his home. His wearing apparel was worth $27.50, and he had a clothes press valued at $10. His livestock consisted of 13 cows ($176), 10 sheep ($20), 9 hogs ($25), annd 4 horses ($225). The large number of cows is surprising, since this was before the advent of dairy farming. The administrators of his estate, his two sons, produced their account in 1817. There remained for distribution, (exclusive of the land), a total of $3813.20. It is interesting to note that Elisha J. Hall was paid $25 for medical services during Ludwig's last illness. The tombstone which James Kelly made for them cost $20.34; it is still standing and legible.
