1758 Margaret Gantz, daughter of Frantz Heinrich Gantz and Anna Margaret Ruhl, was born on February 3. [1] [2]

1761 George Bortner, son of Gorg and Maria Bordner, was born on February 6. He was baptized in March with sponsors Georg and Elisabeth Gaumuller. [3] [4] [5]

1774 George Bortner purchased land, in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania, from the executors of the estate of Charles Shaffer. Dated November 2. Charles Shaffer had sold to land to George Bortner on September 27, 1759, but died before transferring the deed. [6]

1779 George Bortner was taxed in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania for 50 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cattle. [7]

1780 George Bortner Sr and George and Ludwig Bortner were privates in Captain John Sherer's company in the Fifth Battalion of York County, Pennsylvania. [8]

1782 George Bordner Jr was private fifth class in Captain John Sherer's company of York County, Pennsylvania in Col Remer's Battalion. [9]

1782 George Portner was taxed as a single man, at age 21, in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [10]

1783 George Bortner was taxed as a single man in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [11] [12]

1785 George Bortner and Margaret Gantz were married on January 3, in York County. [13] [14]

1785 George Bortner patented 194 acres in Codorus Twp, York County (Patent 10-100), as described in a deed dated 1802. [15]

1785 George Bortner was granted 200 acres in York County, Pennsylvania on March 29. The land was adjacent to Frederick Frazier and George Krebs in Codorus Twp. Returned on May 7, 1787. [16]

1785 George Bortner purchased land in Codorus Twp from John Gerberich on October 11, 1785. The survey showing 194 acres adjacent to Codorus Creek and the land of John Garverick, George Crabs, and Frederick Frazier was dated July 1, 1785 for a warrant dated March 29. [17] [18] [19]

1786 George Bortner [20] and George Bortner Jr [21] were listed on the septennial census for Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania.

1788 George Bortner sold land (see entry for 1785) to Abraham Hassler on March 14, 1788. [22]

1788 George Bortner and Ludwig Bortner (likely George's brother) were privates in the militia serving under Captain Philip Cramer on September 27, in York County, Pennsylvania. [23]

1788 George Bortner was taxed in 1788 in Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [24]

1788-1789 George Bortner was taxed in Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania.

1789 George Bortner Jr. received a warrant for 150 acres in Shrewsbury Twp, York County, dated May 21. The tract was originally warranted to Martin Hauk in 1762. [25] [26] [27] A survey, dated July 8, 1789, showed 163 acres. [28] [29] Adjacent tracts were owned by Michael Kleinfelter, Jacob Bailey, George Hamspoker, and his own land.

1790 George Bortner lived in Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania, in a household with 2 males under age 16, 1 males age 16 and over, and 2 females. [30]

1791 Christina Portner, daughter of Georg and Margar. Portner, was born on July 9. She was baptized on August 14, with sponsors Abraham and Christina Hossler. [31] [32]

1793 George Bortner was listed on the septennial census for Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [33]

1795 George Bortner Jr and wife Margaret, of Shrewsbury Twp, York County, sold land to Theobald Snyder. George Bortner Jr had purchased the land from Henry Ruhl on October 9, 1787. Henry Ruhl had purchased the land from Jacob Bailey on February 13, 1783. Jacob Bailey had purchased the land from Michael and Aplonia Klinefelter on February 20, 1773. Michael Klinefelter had purchased the land from Martin Houck on April 11, 1765. The tract, called "Barren Leivial", was surveyed (survey #2758) to Michael Klinefelter and was adjacent to lands of George Klinefelter and Francis Gantz. [34]

1797 Jacob Bailey Senior, yeoman, and wife Elizabeth sold land to George Bortner, farmer, all of Shrewsbury Twp, York County on October 8. One tract was in Codorus Twp, warranted February 14, 1772 and June 28, 1773 to Thomas Armor, adjacent to land of John Rybolt, George Amspacher, Jacob Peter Gerberich. Another tract, warranted April 16, 1789 by Jacob Bailey Sr, was adjacent to land of Peter Low and Michael Klinefelter. [35]

1798 George Bortner was listed on the US direct tax for Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. George had a lot valued at $532. [36]

1801 George Bortner granted land, patented in 1785, to Peter Bortner, as described in a deed dated 1802. [37]

1811 George Bortner warranted and patented 15 acres in Codorus Twp, York County on October 31. [38] [39] [40] [41]

1830 George Bortner Sr (age 60-70) lived in Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania with one female age 20-30 and one female age 60-70. [42]

1842 Margratha Gantz Bortner died on January 17 and was buried at New Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery, Glen Rock, York County, Pennsylvania. Margratha Gantz Bortner was born on February 3, 1758. [43] [44]

1843 John George Bortner died on April 8, 1843 at age 82 years, 2 months, 2 days. George Bortner was buried in Fissel's cemetery, Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [45] [46] [47]

1843 An Orphans Court record concerning the estate of George Bortner, of Codorus Twp, reported that he died on April 8, 1843, leaving 5 children: John, Henry, Christiana married to George Amspacker, Margaret, and Elizabeth, all of York County, except Henry who resides in Richland County, Ohio. The Orphans Court ordered a writ of partition concerning of the estate. Dated September 19. [48]

1844 The writ of partition determined that the estate should not be partitioned among all the heirs. Dated January 31. [49]

1844 Eldest daughter Margaret Bortner chose to accept the real estate of George Bortner, deceased. The other heirs did not accept the offer. Dated March 18. [50]

A biosketch reports [51]:

George Bortner, married to Margaret Gantz, was born Feb. 6, 1761, and died April 8, 1843, aged eighty-two years, two months, two days. They had seven children, four sons and three daughters: llenry, John, George, Jacob, Margaret, Christiana and Elizabeth. Of these, Henry moved to Ohio; John had five children, two sons and three daughters, David, Jesse, Julia, Sallie and Leah; George died at the age of twenty-one; Jacob when sixteen; Margaret died single at the age of eighty-three years; Christiana, married to George Amspacher, died at the age of ninety-three; Elizabeth died in 1853, aged fifty-six. David Bortner was married to a Hartman and had sons and daughters. Those whom I know are Albert, Nathaniel, David and Jesse. Jesse Bortner was killed on the railroad between York and Wrightsville.

A biosketch reports [52]:

George Bortner, Feb.6,1761-Apr.8,1843; m. Jan. 3,1785 Margaret Gantz, Feb.3,1758-Jan.17,1842 (vii), daughter of Henry Francis Gantz, 1722-1809, and Anna Margaret, his wife. From 1785 to 1788 he owned what is now the George H. Trone farm. In 1789 he acquired a large tract of land, containing 198 acres and 136 perches, and called Pine Head, for which he obtained a patent from the state in 1810. This land includes the Lutheran and the Reformed cemeteries in Glen Rock and extends southwest to include the larger part of the Stewart Mummert farm. Finally, he turned this farm over to. his son, John, and moved to the John Thomas farm, near Bonnair, where he died. After his death his daughter, Margaret, acquired it; later his grandson, George Amspacher. George Bortner, and his wife, are buried at Fissel's church; where they were members of the Lutheran congregation.

We have assumed that records for George Bortner in Shrewsbury and Codorus Townships, York County, Pennsylvania refer to the same person. They may have been father and son. We seek evidence to clarify this assumption.
