1732 George Bortner was in the arms of his mother Mary Bortner when she stepped from the ship Adventure onto the soil in America in Philadelphia [family oral tradition]. George's father Balzer Bortner moved from Philadelphia to Lancaster County, probably Tulpehocken Twp. [1] [2] [3]

1752 Berks County was formed from Lancaster County and included Tulpehocken, where the Bortner family lived.

1753 George Bortner's sister, Phillipina Bortner was the godmother of John Kann, son of Anna Barbara Kann in York, York County, Pennsylvania, across the Susquehanna from Berks County. Anna Barbara Kann was a sister to George and Phillipina Bortner.

1754 George Bortner was the owner of the land later owned by Jacob W Bortner. [4]

1754 Tulpehocken was attacked several times by hostile Indians during the French-Indian War.

George Bortner married Appolona Foucher [5]. George Bortner's marriage location has been reported as Berks County or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Wife Marie's name could be Ablona Florschner. Her birthplace has also been reported as Berks County, Pennsylvania. Marie's church was Reformed.

1759 Charles and Philippina (George's sister) Shaffer sold land to George Bortner on September 27. The tract was 100 acres of land in Codorus Twp, York County, between Rockville and Krebs Valley. George Bortner lived on this farm in Codorus Township until he died (about 1801). [6]

1759 Christina Bortner, daughter of Georg Bordner, was born on December 22, 1759. She was baptized, with sponsor Phillippina Schafer (perhaps a sister of George), at St. Jacobs Stone Lutheran and Reformed Church, Brodbecks, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

1761 Gorge Bordner, son of Gorg and Maria Bordner, was baptized in March, with sponsors Georg and Elisabeth Gaumuller. [12] [13] [14]

1762 Ludwig Bordner, son of Gorg and Maria Bordner, was baptized in June, with sponsors Ludwig and Anna Catharina Krebs. [15] [16] [17]

1765 Maria Catherine Bortner, daughter of George Bordner and Maria Bordner, was baptized on February 24, by Reverend Jacob Lischy, with sponsors Michel and Maria Catharina Schultz. [18] [19] [20]

1766 Maria Elisabeth Bordner, daughter of Georg and Maria Appolonia Bordner, was baptized on October 5, at St. Jacobs Stone Lutheran and Reformed Church, Brodbecks, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. Friedrich and Phillipina Froescher were sponsors. [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27]

1770 Johann Peter Bortner, son of Georg and Maria Appolonia Bortner, was born on June 3, 1770. He was baptized, with sponsors Peter and Margaretha Gerberich, on June 19, 1770 at St. Jacobs Stone Lutheran and Reformed Church, Brodbecks, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. 1771 George Bortner and family switched to the newly built German Reformed (Calvinist) Fissels Church.

1774 Ludwig Krebs, executor of the estate of Charles Shafer, transferred land to George Bortner, of Codorus Twp, on November 2. The tract was 50 acres of land that George had previously contracted to purchase from Charles Shafer (dated September 27, 1759), but which had not been transferred at the time that Charles Shafer died. [37]

1776 George Bortner was a private in Captain George Hoover's company in the First Battalion of York County Associators in Pennsylvania. [38] [39]

1777 George Portner, perhaps this one, was a private in the Company of Captain John Shyrrer, of the Seventh Battalion of York County. [40] [41]

1777 George Bortner was a private in Capt. George Hoover's Company in 1776 at Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania [42] [43]. George Bortner Sr, Ludwig Bortner, and George Bortner were privates in the 6th company, 5th Battalion, Pennsylvania militia of Paradise Twp, York County under Captain Bolly during the Revolutionary War [44]. George Bortner and his two sons, George Jr and Ludwig, were in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War [45].

1778 George Bortner was taxed in Codorus Twp, York County. [46] [47]

1779 George Bortner was taxed 75 pounds for 50 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cattle in Corodus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [48] [49]

1780 George Portner was taxed for 50 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cattle in Corodus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [50] [51]

1780 George Bortner Senior and George and Ludwig Bortner were privates in Captain John Shearer's company in the Fifth Battalion of York County, Pennsylvania. [52] [53]

1781 George Bortner was taxed 1 pound 15 shillings 6 pence for 50 acres, 2 horses, and 5 cattle in Corodus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [54] [55]

1782 George Pordner was private third class in Captain John Sherer's company of York County, Pennsylvania in Col Remer's Battalion. [56]

1782 George Bortner was taxed 5 pounds and 15 shillings for 50 acres, 2 horses, and 6 cattle in Corodus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. Son George Bortner [Portner] was taxed as a single man. [57]

1783 George Bottner was taxed for 100 acres and 14 inhabitants in Corodus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. Son George Bortner was taxed as a single man. [58] [59] [60]

1785 George Bottner was taxed for 100 acres in Corodus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [61]

1785 George Bortner warranted 200 acres of land in Codorus Twp, York County on March 29. George Bortner patented 194.1 acres on May 7, 1787. The survey map shows the tract adjacent to Codorus Creek and adjacent to lands owned by George Crabs, John Garverick, and Frederick Frazier. [62] [63] [64] [65] [66]

1786 George Bortner and George Bortner Jr were listed on the septennial census for Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [67]

1788 Son George Bortner moved to Shrewsbury Twp (see the notes for son George) so documents in Codorus Twp for George Bortner refer to George Bortner Senior for the period 1788-1801.

1790 George Burtner lived in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania, in a household with 2 males under age 16, 3 males age 16 and over, and 3 females. [68] Son Ludwig Bortner was listed adjacent.

1792 John Portner, son of John and Juliann Portner, was born on November 22. He was baptized December 30,1792 with sponsors George and Abellone Portner at Saint Paul's Church in Shrewsbury, York County, Pennsylvania. [69]

1796 Catharina Hossler, daughter of Abraham and Christina Hossler, was born on November 23, with sponsors Apelonia and Georg Bortner. [70] [71]

1796 Maria Apollonia Floucher Bortner was buried at New Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery, Glen Rock, York County, Pennsylvania. Maria Apollonia Floucher Bortner was born in 1732. No grave marker is shown. [72] [73]

1798 George Bortner sold 35 acres of land to Abraham Hosler on October 12. [74]

1799 George Bortner sold 31 acres of land to Abraham Hosler on December 13. [75]

1800 George Bortner's son, Peter Bartner, age 26-44, lived in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. A male age 45+ was listed in the household, perhaps this Johan George Bortner, but no older female (suggesting that mother Marie Appolonia had already died). Son Ludwik Bartner was listed nearby. 1801 George Bortner, yeoman, deeded his 159 acre farm to Peter Bortner (his fifth son) on January 2. The land included the tract that George had patented in 1785 (Patent 10-100) and land; adjoining lands of Abraham Hosler, Peter Gerberich, and Jacob Bailey; purchased from George Krebs in 1793. Witnessed by Peter Defost? and Henry Miller. [78]

1801 Georg Bortner died on January 2 and was buried at New Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery, Glen Rock, York County, Pennsylvania. Georg Bortner was born in 1732. [79] [80]

1801 George Bortner and his wife were reported buried at New Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery (Fissel's) Church Cemetery, Glen Rock, Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [81]

1802 The farm was sold to Ludwig Bortner on May 2. [82]

Research Notes:

Perhaps the sponsors at the 1766 baptism of daughter Mary Elizabeth were named Floucher and were relatives of Marie Appolonia.

A biosketch reports [83]:

George Bortner, ancestor of the Bortner family of Codorus township, York county, Penna.; born in Germany about 1732, son of Balzer and Mary Elizabeth Bortner, who came to Pennsylvania in 1732 and located in Lancaster (now Berks) county; married Marie Appolonia Floucher (xii); located in Ccdorus township, York county in 1759; farmer; member of the Reformed church.

A biosketch reports [84]:

George Bortner, married to Appolona Floucher, was born about 1731. He settled in Codorus township. In 1754 he was the owner of the property now owned by Jacob W. Bortner. and on Nov. 2. 1774, he bought fifty acres of Ludwig Krebs, executor of the estate of Charles Shafer, deceased. On Oct. 12, 1798, he sold thirty-five acres to Abraham Hosler. On Dec. I 3, 1799, he sold thirty - one acres to Abraham Hosler. On Jan. 2, 1801, he sold the balance to his son Peter. On May 2, 1802, it was sold to Ludwig Bortner, who owned it until after his death, when it was sold to John Ziegler in 1817.

An erroneous biosketch reports [85]:

Henry M. Bortner, son of Michael and Catherine (Marckel) Bortner, of Codorus and Shrewsbury Townships, respectively, was born January 8, 1821, in Codorus Township, and is the second in a family of eight children … Our subject's father, John Michael Bortner, died October 21, 1870, in his ninetieth year. Subjects paternal grandparents were Ludwig Bortner and Ablona (Florschner) Bortner, and were among the pioneer settlers of Codorus Township.
