Research Notes:

We are researching Samuel M Weigel, son of Jonas Weigle [1]. We suspect that Samuel, son of Jonas, was married to Martha A Harmon.

We include notes for this Samuel, born about 1832, married to Lydia Freeman, in order to keep track of alternative possible relationships.

1850 Samuel Weigle (age 18) lived in the household of Luther Weigle (age 29) and Susan Weigle (age 25) in Hanover Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. Samuel Weigle (age 64) and Margaret (age 55) and other persons lived with them. [2]

1854 Samuel Rahn and Lydia Freeman were married on February 15 in Adams County, Pennsylvania. Samuel Rahn, child of Philip Rahn and Fanny Rahn, was born in Adams County. Lydia Freeman was a child of Joseph Freeman and Susan Freeman. [3]

1860 Samuel Weigle (age 26, born in Pennsylvania), unmarried, carpenter, lived in Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania, in a household with William Hartzhorn (age 64), Marg Hartzhorn (age 60), Mary Hartzhorn (age 32), and Edw Raffensperter (age 19). [4]

1860 Lydia Rahn (age 27, born in Pennsylvania) lived in Straban Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania, in a household with Samuel Rahn (age 72). [5]

1863 On 17 June, Samuel Weigle enlisted as a private in company I, regiment 26 of the PA infantry and was discharged on 30 July 1863 [6].

1866 Lydia Ann Weigle, late Lydia Ann Rahn, administratrix of the estate of Samuel P Rahn, deceased, gave her account of the estate. [7]

1866 "On 26 ult [December, married] by Rev Dr Schmucker, Mr Samuel Weigle to Mrs Lydia Ann Rahn of Straban Township." [8]

1870 Samuel Weigle (age 38, carpenter with estate at $800) and Lydia A Weigle (age 37, with estate at $3000) lived in Granite Mill, Straban Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania with Fanney Rahn (age 8) and Charles Weigle (age 3). [9]

1880 Samuel Weigle (age 47, born in Pennsylvania, married) lived in Straban Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania, in a household with Lydia A Weigle (age 47), Charles Weigle (age 13), Fannie Rahn (age 18), and William E Weigle (age 9). Samuel Weigle's parents were both born in Pennsylvania. Samuel Weigle was a farmer. [10] [11]

1890 Veteran's schedule listed Samuel Weigle at Granite Hill, Straban Twp, York County, Pennsylvania.

1898 Seven years ago, Mr. William E Weigle, son of Samuel of Goulden's Station, went west. He enlisted, was discharged in Tacoma, married, went into bicycle business, enlisted again, waiting to be sent to Philippines. [12]

1900 Samuel (born June 1832) and Lydia A (born Oct 1832 with 4 births, 3 living) lived in Straban with son Charlie (born Sep 1866) and Fannie S Herbet (step-daughter born March? 1862). Lydia's father was born in New Jersey and her mother in Maryland. [13]

1904 Lydia A. Weigle, married, died on December 30, at age 72, in Straban Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania. Lydia A. Weigle was born in Straban Township. [14]

1904 Lydia Weigle, wife of Samuel, was buried at Saint Pauls Lutheran Church Cemetery, Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. Lydia Weigle was born In 1832. Lydia was buried at Pine Bank, "The Pines", Cemetery, aka Rock Creek Cemetery in Adams County. [15]

1904 "Mrs. Annie Freeman Weigle, wife of Samuel Weigle, died at her home at Gulden's Station, this county, Friday afternoon, December 30, from a complication of diseases, aged 72 years. Mrs Weigle had been an invalid for three or four years. The funeral was held Tuesday morning of last week. Rev. S. L. Rice conducting services. with interment at Pines Church cemetery. Deceased is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs Fannie Herbst, at home. and two sons, Chas. of Gulden's, and William E. Weigle of St. Louis, Mo. Gettysburg Compiler 11 January. This is a possible match for Lydia A, based on names of husband and children and birthyear.

1904 Lydia Weigle (1832-1904) was reported buried at Saint Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery (The Pines), New Oxford, Adams County, Pennsylvania. [16]

1905 "Samuel Weigle a well-known citizen of Straban township, died Sunday morning april 23, at his home near Gulden's station in the 73rd year of his age. Mr Weigle's wife died last winter. Deceased lived at one time in Hanover. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon of last week and interment was made in Mt Olivet cemetery, Hanover. He leaves two sons and one daughter, Charles of Gulden's, William E Weigle of St Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Fannie Herbst at home. Two sisters and one brother survive, Mrs. John S. Young, Mrs Sarah Stine, and Luther Weigle, all of Hanover." Gettysburg Compiler 3 May 1905.

1905 Wm E Weigle, son of the late Samuel Weigle of Gulden's Station has been recommended to the president by Secretary Taft for a good position in Panama. Gettysburg Compiler 14 June.

1905 Samuel Weigle, married, died on April 23, at age 72, in Straban Twp, Adams County, Pennsylvania. Samuel Weigle was born in Oxford [Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania]. Samuel Weigle was a Farmer. Samuel was buried at Hanover. [17]
