Notes for Andrew Hershey and Maria Schnebeli

There were two men named Andrew Hershey in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania alive in the same era: Andrew Hershey of East Petersburg (1698-24 December, 1754) and Andrew Hershey of Salunga (c 1702-1792). One of these was the son of Christian Hershey and Adelheit [Oade] Scholi. The other may have been the son of Hans Hershey [1]. One of them was also likely the husband of Maria Snaveley, named in her father's will as wife of Andrew Hershey of Hempfield. David R Johnson [2] states that the parents of Andrew Hershey of East Petersburg "appear to have been Christian and Oade Hershey", citing as evidence the History of York County, Pennsylvania by Gibson [3]. Richard Warren Davis has suggested that Andrew of East Petersburg was the son of Hans Hershey [4] and that Andrew of Salunga was the son of Christian and Oade Scholi Hershey [5]. We don't know which, if either, is correct. We note that Andrew of Salunga named a daughter Oti [Oade?]. With little other justification, we show the ancestry suggested by Richard Warren Davis.

1702 Andrew Hershey, son of Christian Hershey, was born 1702. [6]

1724 Andrew Hershey married Mary about this time. We seek evidence about the spouse of Andrew Hershey. [7] [8] [9]

1728 Andreas Hirschi, perhaps this one, signed the oath of allegiance to King George of England to be naturalized in Pennsylvania, which allowed him to hold land as a citizen. He was on the list of Mennonites. [10]

1733 Andrew Hershey received a warrant for a tract of 500 acres on the Little Conestoga River in Lancaster County on January 19. He received the patent in 1735. [11] [12] [13] Adjacent tracts were owned by George Derr [14], Philip Beels in right of Hans Adam Miller [15] [16] [17] [18] [19]

1735 Andrew Hershey, son of Christian Hershey, entered a tract of land west of Pittsfield, obtaining the same from the Penns in 1735. [20]

1738 Andrew Hershey received a warrant for a tract of 200 acres on Codorus Creek in Lancaster County on October 24. [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] [28] [29]

1738 Andrew Hershey Jr received a warrant for a tract of 288 acres in Lancaster County on January 18, and received the patent in 1741. [30] [31] One survey returned in 1738 reported 88 acres [32]. Another survey dated 1731 reported 424 acres on Shickasolungo creek; 300 acres in right of Martin Kendrick and John Herr and 124 acres by consent of the Commissioners of Property. The whole quantity contained 388 acres. [33]

1741 Andrew Hershey Sr and Benjamin Moore received a warrant for a tract of 283 acres of land, in Lancaster County, on May 29. [34] The survey in Hopewell Twp, Lancaster County was made for Benjamin Moore and was assigned to Andrew Hershey. [35] Andrew Hershey Sr received the patent in 1741. [36] Adjacent landowners were George Hildebrand, Abraham Endloss, and Urich Chadwick.

1742 Andrew Hershey received a warrant for a tract of 300 acres, on the West Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, on April 13. [37] [38] [39]

1746 Andrew Hershey received a warrant for a tract of 356 acres in Lancaster County on October 28. [40] He received the patent on July 18, 1747. [41]

1751 There were two listings for And'w Hershaw, perhaps father and son, on the tax list in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County. [42]

1753 Andrew Hershey and wife Mary, of Hempfield Twp, with Henry Bostler of Philadelphia and wife Anna Maria, sold land, on April 5, to Christopher Grafford. The land was on Queen Street in the borough of Lancaster. Peter Warral and wife Sarah sold the land on 8 October 1746 to Andrew Hershey and Henry Bostler. [43]

1754 The will of Andrew Hershey [Hershy] was dated 9 December and was probated 19 February 1755 in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The will named wife Mary and children Benjamin, Eva, Christian and Jacob. Executors were Jacob and Christian Hershey. [44] [45] [46]

The heirs included wife Mary Hershey; four sons: Christian, John, Joseph, and Benjamin; and three daughters: Mary Cryder and husband Peter, Anna Huber and husband John, and Elizabeth a minor. The land was owned by Andrew Hershey, who by a proprietary patent ? executed the fifteenth day of January 1735 became seized (inter alia) of & to a certain tract of land ? in Hempfield township … by a branch of ? little Conestoga creek … 500 acres … [53] [54]

1766 The identity of Andrew Hershey's heirs was further clarified when son Joseph Hershey's estate was settled. Joseph Hershey had been granted 200 acres by Benjamin Hershey on 20 July 1760. Joseph left his 200 acre estate (adjacent owners Benjamin Hershey, Jacob Shallenberger, Christopher Fry, Martin Hoofman, Peter Godshall) to son Christian with the condition that if Christian were to die without heirs that wife Mary was to have 500 pounds before division of the estate among Joseph's brothers and sisters. Son Christian died in his minority without issue. The estate descended to Joseph's brothers and sisters: Christian Hershey, Eva Hershey, Mary wife of Peter Kryder, John Hershey, Anna wife of John Hoover, Benjamin Hershey, Elizabeth wife of David Brubaker. Christian Hershey and David Brubaker paid the other heirs for their shares and divided the 200 acre estate. Bentz Hershey and sister Eva quit claim to Christian Hershey, all of Lancaster County.
