Notes for Christian Hershey and Esther Egle

Research Notes:

Christian Hershey (B.21) is shown here as a son of Christian Hershey (B.2) and Adelheit Scholi, based on the research of Richard Warren Davis, although I have found no indication in any records that he was an heir to them: "B.21. Christian Hershey, b. 1692. died 1745, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.6 He was listed as a tenant of the Munchhof at Friedelsheim on 28 Jul 1737. On the tenant list for Friedelsheim on 9 Apr 1739 it stated that Christian Lichti took the part of Christian Herschi. Apparently Christian sold his farm to Lichti in January of 1739 when he left for Pennsylvania. He arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Robert & Alice" on 3 Sep 1739. He was married to Esther Egli, probably the daughter of Abraham Egli of Branchweilerhof, Germany. Christian and Esther settled at Mannheim Township, Lancaster County. His children and their spouses were named in a deed." [1]

I have not reconciled the immigration in 1739, suggested above by Richard Warren Davis, with the 1726 tax listing and 1735 land warrant, reported below.

1724 Christian Hershey was on the Conestoga Twp, Lancaster County tax list. Father Christian Hershey was listed in 1718 and 1719, but not 1720-1723, although brothers Benedict and Andrew were listed. It is unclear whether Christian Hershey Sr was listed intermettently or whether Christian Hershey Sr died in 1720 and by 1724 there was another Christian Hershey of age in Lancaster County. [2]

1735 Christian Hearsey warranted 226 acres in Lancaster County on September 16. He received the patent on May 12. 1743. [3] [4] [5]

1739 Christian Hershey [Hersin] immigrated to Philadelphia on the ship Robert & Alice on September 3. [6]

1743 John and Ann Snably granted land to Christian Hershey on May 5. The land was later passed to Christian's heirs. These transactions were described in a deed between Samuel Myer and John Moser. [7]

1744 Christian Hershey warranted 100 acres in Codorus Twp, Lancaster County on September 17. [8] [9] [10]

1744 Christian Hershey warranted 200 acres in Hellam Twp, Lancaster County on May 21. [11] [12]

1744 Christian Hershey warranted 70 acres in Manheim Twp, Lancaster County on May 30. [13] [14] [15]

1745 The will of Christian Hersha was written High Dutch. On 27 March, witnesses Benjamin Hersha and John Long verified the will. Christian Hershy, son of Christian, was party to a deed in 1762, so this will must be for Christian Hirshi Sr. Since widow Oade was not named in the administration, perhaps she had recently died, which precipitated this probate proceeding for the will of Christian Hirschi Sr. [16]

1762 In November, the heirs of Christian Hershey [Hersha] of Manheim Twp, Lancaster County sold land to Benjamin Hershey, a son. The heirs named were Christian Hershey and wife Barbara, Abram Hersha and wife Elizabeth, Peter Reeshar, Samuel Heir and wife Anna, Abram Neff and wife Mary, David Heir and wife Barbara, Henry Heir and wife Hester, Jacob Erisman and wife Addah. The 301 acres of land in Manheim Twp had been patented on 15 May 1735 by Jacob Funk [17]. Jacob Funk and wife Fronica sold the land on 4 June 1735 to John Snabley [18]. John Snabley sold the land, except for 4 acres, on 4 May 1743 to Christian Hersha. The land was next to land of Melchor Snyder, Jacob Meily, Henry Landes, and John Snabley now Benjamin Landes. Christian died and left three sons and six daughters, named as shown in this file. Witnessed by James Bickam and Wilton Atkinson. Most of the parties appeared on October 30, 1765. [19]

Another deed recorded that the nine heirs of Christian Hershey agreed that Benjamin Hershey should hold the land that Christian had purchased from John Snably. The heirs were named as Christian Hershey, Abraham Hershey, Benjamin Hershey, Elizabeth the wife of Peter Reeser, Ann the wife of Samuel Herr, Mary the wife of Abraham Neff, Barbara the wife of David Herr, Esther the wife of Henry Herr, and Adah the wife of Jacob Erisman. This transaction was described in a deed between Samuel Myer and John Moser citing Lancaster deed Z-121. [20]

1783 (son) Benjamin Hershee and wife Catharine of Manheim Twp purchased land from Benamin Landis on May 12. Another parcel had been purchased by Christian Hershy from John Snabley on 4 May 1743. Christian died leaving sons Christian, Abram, and Benjamin and daughters Elizabeth wife of Peter Reeshar, Anne wife of Samuel Heir, Mary wife of Abraham Neff, Barbara wife of David Heir, Hester wife of Henry Heir, and Adah wife of Jacob Erisman. In November 1762 the other heirs sold their portions to Benjamin Hershey. [21] Both parcels were sold to Samuel Myer by Benjamin and Catharine Hershey. [22]
