Notes for Jacob Ebersole and Frances Veronica

These notes are for Jacob Ebersole who died in 1785 in Donegal Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. We suspect that he is one of the men named Jacob Ebersole on Donegal tax lists starting in 1750. There were two or more men named Jacob Ebersol on Donegal township tax lists in 1756 and after. We suspect that the second Jacob was a son of the first Jacob and died in 1828, as these notes suggest. The Jacob named on the 1750 and 1751 tax lists is not explained by the Ebersole genealogies that we have yet seen. Alternatives to our hypothesis are that the second Jacob was a son, born about 1733 in Germany, of Johannes Ebersol, or he could be the Jacob Ebersol who immigrated in 1754. Our notes for the (unidentified) parental family of this Jacob (died 1784) include documentation that we have found for all of the men named Jacob Ebersole in Donegal as well as summaries of the other Ebersole genealogies that we have seen.

Witnessed by Daniel Smith and Joseph Schenck. [89] [90] [91] [92] [93] [94] [95] Other heirs were named in a deed dated 1787.

Abraham Stoner settled on the Susquehanna River (next the the letters NN) south of the tracts owned by Jacob Ebersole's family. The two tracts of land had been granted to Jacob, deceased, by the land patents of 1761 and 1770. At the time of his death, Jacob named 5 sons as heirs. [99]

Research Notes:

We have gathered these notes about Jacob Ebersole and Frances (Veronica), who were the parents of Jacob Ebersole, married to Fronica Mellinger. There were potentially five Jacob Ebersole families living in Donegal Twp, Lancaster County at the same time (1778), so their notes might be mixed together above. Jacob (1724-1785) with wife Frances Veronica and Jacob Ebersole (1756-1828) with wife Fronica Mellinger likely lived in Donegal Twp. Father Jacob Ebersole (1715-1790) [100] and son Jacob Ebersole (1753-?) with wife Barbara Good were also likely residents in 1785. Tax and census records distinguish several men as Jacob Sen, Jacob Jr, Jacob (smith), and Jacob (big). Freemen were of taxable age but unmarried, which is a transient state. The records suggest that Jacob (big) was the same person as Jacob (Jr) at one time, perhaps 1757-1782, but the identity of Jacob Jr did change, at least after 1785. Perhaps Jacob Senr died in 1785 and Jacob (big) Jr became the new Jacob Senr.

Albert Gerberich gave the following summary [110]:

VI. Jacob Ebersohl (died in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, 1785) and his wife Frances (Veronica) are the ancestors of most of the family of the name in Lancaster County. They had five sons.

1763 A different Jacob Ebersole immigrated to Philadelphia on the Ship Chance on November 1. [111] However, the 1761 land patent and the 1787 deed for the same land, which names the heirs of our Jacob Ebersole, show that our Jacob Ebersole was in Pennsylvania before 1763. Robert Heilman gave the following biosketch, which confuses the 1763 immigrant with Jacob Ebersole Senior, and then has his son being born in Donegal in 1757 before they had arrived in America. [112]:

Jacob Ebersoll, the progenitor of this family of Ebersoles, emigrated from Bern Switzerland in the year 1763. He sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, and last from Cowes, England aboard the ship, Chance, commanded by Captain Charles Smith. He arrived at Philadelphia in the Province of Pennsylvania on November 1, 1763.

Jacob traveled inland from Philadelphia to Donegal Township in Lancaster County where he settled. He died there in 1785.

All that is know about Jacob's wife is that her given name was Frances (Veronica).

Ambiguity of father: Jacob's father is not known. Jacob has been reported (perhaps incorrectly) as a son of Johannes Ebersole (clan 2) with different sons for Abraham (clan 1) than shown here [113]. Richard Warren Davis [114] suggests that Jacob was a son of Abraham. We seek further documentation.

A biosketch [115] reports:

2a Jacob Ebersohl, [reports several incorrect speculations about his father] … ; d. 1787; his wife was Fannie. Jacob bought a farm of 366¼ acres in Donegal (now Conoy) Township, Lancaster County, for about $1 an acre. The first deed to this farm from "Thomas and Richard Penn, Esquires, true and absolute propriataries and governors in chief of the province of Pennsylvania" was given to Samuel Black 1744 on a down payment of $75. He assigned it to Hugh Hall 1745, and he to Christian Caffman 1748, and he sold it to Jacob who recorded his deed to it June 3, 1761 at Phila. for Lancaster Co. Book H. A. V. 1 Page 285. Eli Ebersole, Elizabethtown, Pa., loaned me his carefully written record of many of Jacob's descendants and a copy of this first deed. Albert S. Ebersole now lives on this farm. It has never been out of the hands of the Ebersoles. Jacob and Fannie were buried in the old homestead graveyard on this farm but the marking is uncertain. 5 children known

Concerning mills [116]:

The first grist-mill erected in this township was built by Philip Gloninger on Conoy Creek in 1749. In the year 1759 he sold two hundred and nine acres of land and the mill to John Nissly and removed to the town of Lebanon. In the year 1780, John Nissly, Sr., owned this mill and three hundred acres of land. At the time John Nissly purchased Gloninger's mill he owned some adjoining land. The following-named persons also owned adjoining land, which furnished a clue to the location and names of the pioneer settlers, to wit: Nicholas Boss and Peter Root on the east side of Conoy Creek, and Jacob Ebersole, Peter Wayland, Benjamin Wissler, and John Nissly on the west side.

Concerning Good's meeting house [117]:

Good's Meeting-House. One hundred and thirty years ago the Ebersoles, Nisslys, Rootts (Rutts), Heisey's, Good's, and a number of other Mennonite families settled in the western part of Donegal township. The most prominent of all the pioneer Mennonite settlers in the township was Melchior Breneman, a Mennonite minister. He, however, located several miles farther east, and near the river, in the heart of an Indian traders' and Scotch-Irish settlement. The pioneer settlers built their meeting-houses near a spring, and as near the centre of the settlement which adhered to a particular faith. The first meeting-house was built of logs, near a beautiful spring, which feeds Brubaker's Run, upon land belonging to the Goods, and very near the northern boundary-line of Conoy township. Melchior Breneman was the first minister who preached in this meeting-house. The attendance is large and the numbers are constantly increasing. Three years ago the old meeting-house, which was probably the second one which stood there, was torn down and a much larger one of frame built in its place, which can seat comfortably several hundred persons. When the framework of this last building was being raised an unfortunate accident occurred. When the workmen were upon the upper joist, raising the rafters, a support under the girder gave way and precipitated a large number of persons to the ground. One person was killed and several others received severe injuries.
