Notes for Christian Kauffman and Barbara Gochenour

1751 Christian Coffman was taxed 5 shillings in Manor Township, Lancaster County in 1751. [1]

before 1760 Christian Kauffman acquired 163.75 acres, the south part of the 462 acre grant to his father Andrew Kauffman. Apparently, he farmed this tract prior to receivinig a patent for the land on January 20, 1760. [2] This might be the tract in the 1762 note, below.

1758 Christian Kauffman of Manor Twp, Lancaster County, purchased land in Conestogoe Manor, Manor Twp, from Tobias Stoneman, on May 4. [3]

1762 Christian Kauffman warranted land in Lancaster County on January 4. John, Jacob, Michael, Christian, and Michael Kauffman all received warrants on the same day [4]. The land warrant for Christian stated "Whereas upon a division of the estate late of the said Andrew Coffman since his decease, amongst his children, ... became the property of Christian Kauffman, one of the sons of the said Andrew ... confirmation by patent to the said Christian Kauffman ..." [5] Christian Kauffman received a patent for 163 acres on January 6, 1762. [6] [7] Adjacent landowners were Abraham Herr, James Nelson, brothers Jacob and John Kauffman, and Abram Stoner, originally written as Stonerman with "man" crossed out. The surveys suggest that Michael Kauffman's warrant was previously owned by Andreas Coffman and was adjacent to lands of Martin Funk and John Shank in 1741. More details for four brothers are given here:

1762 Four of the five sons of Andreas Kauffman received warrants for land on January 4 and received patents for land in Conestoga Manor, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on January 6 [8]. Christian [9] [10], John [11] [12], Jacob [13] [14], and Michael [15] [16] Kaufman got warrants and patents on the same dates as each other. Jacob's patent was also related to a warrant by Andrew Kauffman [Andreas] dated November 2, 1737. [17] Brother Andrew Kauffman, who inherited the family land according to the will of their father Andreas Kauffman, had paid his siblings for their shares of the estate. Michael Kauffman, of Manor Twp, was granted a second land patent for 130 acres dated April 6. [18] [19] See also [20].

1765 A tract of 77 acres in Hempfield Twp from the estate of Barbara Gochenour's father, Joseph Gogenhour, was reviewed for partition on March 5. Barbara Kauffman, wife of Christian Kauffman and eldest daughter of Joseph Gochenour opted to buy the land. The sum of 71 pounds 13 shillings was due to each of the other heirs. [21] [22]

1766 A deed named Christian Kauffman as husband of Barbara, daughter of Frena (Feronica) Musselman, upon the death of Feronica's brother, Peter Musselman, who died without issue. Land from Peter Mussleman's estate was sold in 1766 by many of the heirs of his estate. [23]

1767 Christian Cauffman, of Manor Twp, purchased land on November 9, in Manor Twp, from Joseph Nelson, who had received the land by patent AA8-255 on April 10, 1767. [24]

1768 The inheritance of Mary Cochenour, deceased, minor daughter of Joseph Cougenhour senior deceased, was distributed, on September 6, among the mother, brothers, and sisters of Mary: deceased sister Frena late wife of Abraham Cassell, deceased brother Joseph, sister Barbara wife of Christian Kauffman, sister Elizabeth wife of John Necomer, brother Joseph, mother Elizabeth. [25]

1768 John Kauffman and John Huber, executors of the estate of Joseph Cochenour, transferred land, on September 15, from Joseph's estate to grandsons Henry and Joseph from the tract in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County that had been patented to Joseph Coghanour on April 18, 1740. [26] Joseph Gochenour Senior had specified the inheritance to his grandsons in his will dated 7 January 1764. Surviving daughters Barbara, wife of Christian Kauffman, and Elizabeth, wife of John Newcomer, were named. [27]

1774 Christian Kauffman and his wife Barbara granted a 350 acres tract of land in Manor Twp, on April 6, to the contributors of the Pennsylvania Hospital, because he had an obligation in the penal sum of 2,400 pounds. The land was adjacent to land of John Stoneman, Christian Hoffman, Peter Shellenberger, late James Ewing and Susanna his wife, Michael Atkinson, Valentine Hart, John and Barny Mann, John Keagy. [32]

1776 Christian Kauffman Senior, perhaps this one, granted land to his son Christian Kauffman Jr, both yeomen of Manor Twp, Lancaster County. The land was originally granted to James McMaster who granted one parcel of it to John George, and Barny Mann and the remaining parcel of 240 acres to Christian Kauffman Senior on 15 May 1772. The land was next to land of John and Barny Mann, John Kagy, and Christian Kauffman Senior. [33]

One parcel of land was the same as the land Christian sold to son Christian Jr in 1776. Another parcel was sold to Christian Kauffman Jr by Henry and Mary Witmer on March 3, 1779. [37] [38]

1785 Christian Kauffman, perhaps this one or his son, signed a petition to not extend the market of High Street, Lancaster County. [39]

1785 The tax list for Manor Twp, Lancaster County had several entries for Christian Kauffman: Christian Sr (190 acres), Christian Jr, Christ'n and son (126 acres), and Christian (sawmiller, 200 acres); also Kauffman with other first names. [40]

1786 There were four listings (or 3, one sawmiller is crossed out) for Christian Kauffman on the septennial census for Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [41]

1790 Christian Kauffman lived in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with 2 males over age 16 and 2 females in the household. [42]

1794 A petition to build or enlarge the public market in Lancaster County was signed by several persons, including Christian Kauffman. [44]

1796 Christian Kaufman of Manor Twp, and Barbara his wife, sold 98 acres of land in Manor Twp to their son Andrew on May 6. The land was next to land of Christian Stoner, Michael Kaufman, Henry Kaufman, Henry Paulus, Matthew Lecron, Isaac Kaufman, and said Christian Kaufman. The land had been granted to Christian as part of 462 acres and a patent was granted on January 13, 1762. [45] Water rights to build a dam were specified for Christian Herr to "swell the water up to a spring so the said spring be left unmolested & untouched by the water so swelled with free privilege to repair the said dam and to keep it in repair". [46] [47] The tract was the central portion of the 1760/62 grant. Andrew Kauffman and wife Mary sold part of the tract to Christian Herr in 1799. [48]

1796 Christian Kaufman of Manor Twp, and Barbara his wife, sold two tracts of land in Manor Twp to their son Michael on May 6. One was next to land of Henry Kaufman, Andrew Kaufman, and Christian Smith containing 46 acres. [49] The other was next to the first tract and next to land of Christian Smith, Christian Hershaw, John Newcomer, late John Wormly now of Christian Herr, containing 54 acres. The third tract was near the second one. [50] A tract of 109 acres called the Nelson purchase was next to the 46 acre tract. Son Christian got 19 acres. [51]

1798 There were two men named Christian Kaufman, and a widow of Christian Kaufman, listed on the direct tax list for Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Andrew, son of Michael Kauffman, and Isaac and Michael Kaufman were also listed. [52]

1800 Christian Kauffman (age 45+) lived in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with a female (age 26-44). Nearby were the Kauffman families of Michael (age 45+), John (age 26-44), Christian (age 26-44), Andrew (age 26-44), and Isaac (age 45+, possibly Christian's brother). Barbara would have been older than the oldest female in this household, so she was not listed. [53]

1805 Christian Kauffman's will was dated on December 3 and was in probate on February 4, 1806 in Manor Twp, Lancaster County. The will named children Andrew, Michael, Christian, John, Elizabeth wife of Henry Lighty, and Anna wife of Abraham Stoner. Son Andrew inherited only 1 shilling because he had aquired his portion and sold it at great profit. Wife not named in the abstracts. Witnessed by Andrew Kauffman and Andrew Kauffman Sr. Administrators: Jacob Witmer and Andrew Shenck. [55] [56] [57] [58]

1810 Widow Kauffman, age 45+, lived in Donegal Twp, Lancaster County. This could possibly be Christian's widow living near daughter Anna Kauffman Stoner. [59]

Research Notes:

We are researching Anna, wife of the Abraham Stoner who died in 1829. We suspect she was the Anna Stoner, wife of Abraham Stoner, named in the 1805 will of Christian Kauffman. We suspect, as do some other researchers, that Christian Kauffman, who warranted land in 1762 and then sold that same land in 1796, with wife Barbara, to sons Michael and Andrew is the same Christian Kauffman whose will was dated in 1805 and the same as Christian Kauffman, named as husband of Barbara Gochenour, in the 1765 will of Joseph Gogenhour. There is, however, some uncertainty since there were sometimes four men named Christian Kauffman living in Manor Twp at the same time. Both Christian Kauffman, son of Andrew Kauffman, and Christian Kauffman, son of John Kauffman, might be named in some of the events listed in the notes above. [60] [61]

A Kauffman genealogy reports this biosketch [62]:

Christian Kauffman (1723-1806) md. Barbara, probably dau. of Joseph Gochenour. Manor Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa. He acquired 163¾ acres, the south part of the 462-acre grant to his father Andrew Kauffman. Apparently he farmed this tract prior to acquiring the patent Jan. 20, 1760. fn 1796, he and his wife, Barbara, transferred 98½ acres of the farm, the central portion to his son Andrew, who with his wife Mary sold to Christian Herr 92½. acres in 1799. He and Barbara transferred to his son Michael Kauffman the west part of the 162¾-acre tract containing 46¼ acres; and a second parcel containing 109 acres called the Nelson Purchase which bounded the 46¼ acre parcel. By his will he granted Michael additional woodland tract of 8 acres 150 perches and mortgage was cleared by Michael in 1811. The remaining 19 acres went to his son Christian, Jr., in accordance with the provisions of the will and contained the buildings. His executors were Andrew Shenk and Jacob Witmer, Jr. He willed but 1 shilling to son Andrew because Andrew had acquired his portion which he sold at great profit. See Will Bk. H—p. 654.

Beside the sons named he had a son John; Elizabeth md. Henry Lichty and Anna md. Abraham Stoner.

Joseph Gochenour, Swiss pioneer settler in Hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., died 1764. Issue: Barbara md. Christian Kauffman ; Fraena md. Abraham Cassel; Elizabeth md. John Newcomer; Joseph md. Mary Neff; Mary (single).

Mennonite Records [63] [64] [65] [66] [67]

Some researchers report that Barbara Gochenour, daughter of Frena Musselman and Joseph Gochenour, married this Christian Kauffman, son of Andrew Kauffman [68]. The heirs of Joseph Gochenour released 77 acres to Christian Kauffman and wife Barbara, eldest daughter of Joseph Gochenour by Lancaster deeds L-203, L-204, M-105. Christian Kauffman and Barbara Gochenour had a daughter Anna, who married Christian Kauffman. [69] Other researchers report that Barbara Gochenour, daughter of Frena Musselman and Joseph Gochenour, married Christian Kauffman, son of John Kauffman (c 1700-1735).
