Research Notes:

A biosketch of Philip and Mary Kramer Ziegler, Jr reports [42]:

Jacob Wise was born and reared in Cumberland county, and there spent his life, passing the greater portion of it in South Middleton. His death occurred in 1899, when he was eighty-six years of age. He was a man of diversified occupations and accomplishments, for he could turn his hand to almost anything, and he was a natural-born mechanic. This faculty has descended to his sons. He was a farmer of considerable importance, owning a good farm, but in later life carried on his operations upon a smaller scale. In his private life he was a devout Christian gentleman, and early in life connected himself with the Lutheran Church, but in 1855 he united with the United Brethren Church, as it was more convenient to attend the services of that denomination. In that organization he became one of the most active workers, and held the office of trustee, serving also as steward and class-leader, discharging the duties pertaining to these various positions with a conscientious zeal which made him a recognized leader in church circles. He was also a very liberal contributor of material aid, and his loss was long felt in the church after he had passed to his reward. Politically, he was a Democrat, filled the offices of tax collector and supervisor, and was recognized by the community as one of the solid men of the county.

Jacob Wise married Miss Sophia Zeigler, a daughter of Philip Zeigler, of Cumberland county, a very prominent man in this locality some years ago. Mrs. Wise is still living. She was born in Cumberland county March 15, 1813, being at this writing, well along in her ninety-second year. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Wise ...

A biosketch of the Zeigler family reports [43]:

In addition to the above named children [of Philip Ziegler], three sons, Jesse, David, and Philip, and a daughter, Sophia, were born after the family settled in Cumberland County. … Sophia, the youngest child, became the wife of Jacob Wise, and at the age of almost ninety-two years, is still living [published 1905] at her home in the village of Springville, in this county [Cumberland], reasonably active in mind and body.

Sophia, the youngest daughter of Mary Ann and Philip Ziegler, married Jacob Wise of Springville and was alive in her 83rd year before 1897. [44]

Another secondary source reported that Sophia was a daughter of Abraham Zeigler [45]:

Jacob Wise, eldest son of Frederick and Elizabeth (Wonderly) Wise, was born near Boiling Springs, Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, November 16, 1812. He was reared on his father's farm and naturally chose that occupation for his life work, conducting his operations on a farm near Boiling Springs, of which he was the owner. He was a mechanical genius and was also quite a musician, being an expert on the clarionet, thus affording pleasure not only to himself but also to a large number of people. He was an active supporter of the Democratic party during the early years of his life, but in later years he cast his vote for the candidate best qualified for office, irrespective of party affiliation. In early life he became a member of the Lutheran church, but in 1866 joined Christ's Church, United Brethren in Christ denomination, continuing his connection until his death. He always took an active part in church work and held all offices in the church, serving as class leader for a number of years, trustee, steward and superintendent of the Sunday school. He served as supervisor of Cumberland county for a number of years. He married, 1835, Sophia Zeigler, daughter of Abraham Zeigler, and their children were: Sarah Elizabeth, born November 3, 1838, aforementioned as the wife of Henry Burn, and mother of Mrs. Emma Burn Zimmerman, whose sketch follows this in the work. Child died in infancy. Charles Franklin, married Elizabeth King, of Mechanicsburg, issue, four children, one of whom died in infancy; they reside at Boiling Springs. Jacob Edward, married Martha Myers; they reside at Boiling Springs. Amanda Sophia, widow of Cornelius Lutz; she resides at Boiling Springs with her son. John Franklin, married (first) Clara Day; married (second) Clara Glein; they reside at Littleton, North Carolina. George H., married Emma Naylor, of Mt. Holly; they reside at Mt. Holly Springs; he is superintendent of machinery at the Mt. Holly paper mills. Alfred Z., married Lena Gensler; they reside at Portsmouth, West Virginia. Jacob Wise (father) died April 7, 1899; he was survived by his wife, who died February 18, 1905. Their remains are buried in the cemetery at Springville, Cumberland county, Pennsylvania.
