Research Notes:

The notes above assume that Frederick Wise, son of Jacob and Anna Maria Haffner Wise, who was born in America, was the same person as Frederick 1772-1846, married to Eva Elizabeth Wunderlich. Some sources report that Frederick, spouse of Eva, was born in Germany and was a son of Frederick. [42] [43] This assumption is supported by the 1880 census records for 3 of Frederick Wise's children with Eva, which report his birthplace as Pennsylvania. This assumption is proved by deed YY-474 dated 1848. This deed describes the sale of land which Frederick, widow of Eva Wonderlich Solander, had gotten from his father Jacob.

The ancestry shown here, with father Jacob Wise, differs from some other sources that name Frederick's father as Frederick. Other sources are summarized here:

A biosketch reports [44]:

Frederick Wise was the first of the family to locate in Cumberland county, and is the first of whom there is any definite knowledge. His parents were of German birth, but it is not known whether they came to America or not. He located at South Middleton, Cumberland county, Pa. and became the owner of considerable real estate, upon which he lived and reared his family, becoming one of the good, sturdy citizens of his day. He was recognized and admired for his sterling qualities, and his close adherence to law and order. The rules which governed his life were made to apply to his children, and they grew up honorable men and women. He lived to an advanced age, and was a staunch believer in the principles of true Demcracy, casting his vote for the candidates of the Democratic party. In religious matters he was a consistent member of the Lutheran Church. He was united in marriage with a widow, Mrs. Salander, who had two sons, Daniel and John Salander. She bore her second husband the following children: Eliza, who died unmarried; Catherine, who married William Morrison of Cumberland county; Jacob, the father of Jacob E.; Frederick, who was a farmer of Cumberland county; Ann who became the wife of David Ziegeler of Cumberland county; Susan who died unmarried; Henry who was a farmer of Cumberland county; and Margaret who married Frederick Ryder of Cumberland county.

A biosketch reports [45]:

Frederick Wise, the grandfather of Edward J, settled in Lancaster county, Pa, and there followed farming. In 1800 he came to Cumberland county, buying and settling on a fine farm in South Middleton where he engaged in farming and passed the remainder of his days. His children were as follows: Jacob died in Springville Cumberland county; Margaret Annie died in Carlisle; Frederick was born in South Middleton and worked with his father until his marriage to Maria Lowbrough after which he moved several times until his death in 1890; Eliza died in Springville; Susan died in Carlisle; and Henry died in Shippensburg.

A biosketch reports [46]:

Frederick Wise, son of the above mentioned Frederick Wise, also a native of Germany, accompanied his parents upon their removal to America, he being then in early manhood. He was a weaver by trade, but followed farming as an occupation, obtaining excellent results as he pursued practical and progressive methods. He was the owner of a large farm in Cumberland county. He married Elizabeth Wonderly, who bore him eight children, as follows: Eliza, Catherine, Jacob, Frederick, Ann, Susie and Margaret. Mr. and Mrs. Wise were members of the Lutheran church, and he was a Democrat in politics. Their deaths occurred in 1842 and 1840, respectively.

An alternative lineage might be given by a Jacob, son of Frederick and Cathrina Wise, born on April 20, 1767, baptized July 1 "On Susqhehanna". [47]
