01.18.03 - mac's bar: lansing,
mi [album release party]
other bands: flatfoot, millenary
set:
notes: a ground-breaking night for the band, as it was the
culmination of over two years of work on the new album. loyal fans
traveled from cities across the state (and a few out-of-state) to
attend the special event. the guys played the new entire album start
to finish, projecting slides in the background with a different slide
for each song. there was a fog machine projecting masses of fog throughout
the bar, little bubble containers were handed out as well as silly
string. raffles, give-aways, lights, gnomes, and enormous quantities
of alcohol were involved. a few fuzzkateer birthdays were celebrated
along with the new album. one fuzzkateer, spencer celebrated his 21st
birthday by getting hit between the eyes by one of mead's flying drumsticks.
there was an incredible amount of parents, especially moms in attendance.
and drunk moms always make a show fun. the evening included a special
priced offer on the album, giveaways, a tremendous turnout of gnomes,
a cover of the night ranger classic "sister christian",
and a run-down of most of the album songs as well as older songs.
employing a fog machine, a slide projector, and using their own instruments,
the fuzz gave the enthusiastic crowd just what they come to see -
fuzz rock!! well here's some random memories: drunk fuzzketeer singalong
to "sister christian," fuzzkateer chad involved in heavy
petting with random chicks, mead getting wasted off champagne, millenary.
'nuff said, allyssa getting drunk, dan's mom kicking azz and taking
names on the dance floor, dan getting drunk, the fuzz actually selling
some cd's, michelolo getting drunk, monica flying all the way from
north carolina just for the fuzz, andrew getting drunk, brandon, sarah,
and spencer's birthdays, sarah getting drunk, ed bootlegging the show-oh
wait, he does that every show, spencer getting drunk, the much anticipated
debut of the albino gnomes, backstage pass getting drunk, was that
the oakridge boys opening up? excessive drinking, a small drunken
brawl at the end, some jagoff falling into the slide projector, joe
davis with a beer in one hand and a smoke in the other trying to figure
the damn thing out, dan forgot the first verse of coldfeet, he just
mumbled through it, and then, oddly enough, when it came to the second
verse he had remembered the first! the entire area of the bar in front
of the stage was a sea of fog in which you could occasionally see
a drunken fuzzkateer or mom dancing the night away, spilling beer,
and singing loudly. it was everything it should have been- a truly
great show for the release of "noise destroyers." [thanks

set:
notes: benefit show for the YMCA at camp manitoulin in middleville.
joe davis:"i thought middleville was pretty cool. the acoustics
sucked ballz, but there were lots of enthusiastic youngsters there.
plus, that girl with roundbutt kept bending over in front of us."
ed: "the kids mighta been cool, but the other bands sucked, and
the acoustics sounded like they were playing in a gym....oh wait,
they were playing in a gym. i do have to say it was fun bustin' outta
there tho." [thanks jmfd, ed]
02.08.03 - skelletones
cafe: grand rapids, mi
other bands: halos for martyrs, the veronica speedwell,
special dental team
set:
notes: the special dental team had a cool shock-rock type vibe
to their show, and invited nate onstage with them to play a song.
the lead singer then preceded to repeatedly tell nate the wrong key.
then the fuzz used their fogger on the other band, and the guy got
mad and said he was allergic to fog. [thanks mead]
02.15.03 - churchill's food
& spirits: flint, mi
other bands: jeff raudebaugh, wanderjahr
set: coming soon
notes: another fun show for the guys at churchill's. jeff raudebaugh
opened up the night with a nice set including a cover of fuzz song
"loopy" which featured nate jumping on the drums behind
him. wanderjahr followed with an excellent set. they are a great lansing
band. jeff raudebaugh came back on stage to stand in for his brother
on bass for the fuzz. brandon was out of town and the guys had only
played together once with jeff so they had a limited repertoire. they
ran through some classic fuzz songs. jeff was running around using
two different basses, the bass station thing, and even played a kazoo
and a tambourine during a couple songs. nate played bass on a few
songs while also playing keyboards, and sometimes played bass on his
keyboards. the guys seemed to enjoy the different setup for a night,
and played pretty carefree, having no idea what it would sound like.
mead ran around his drumset while finishing up on "raisins &
rubberbands." nate's screams were hitting high pitches, and dan
played a relaxed guitar. the three played off each other all night,
and would go over to jeff in the middle of songs to let him know how
to play certain parts. the band covered the four-non-blondes song
"what's going on?" to a rousing response. the newly acquired
fog machine was put to use as master fuzzkateer ed walked on-stage
and turned it on while pointing it directly in the faces of band members.
dan's parents were in attendance, and his mom in particular had herself
a good time as she bought some of the kids drinks and got people up
and dancing. near the end of the show manager joe davis took the mic
and tried to do his famous "bust a move" rap, but couldn't
recapture the stage presence of early years. he says he is retired
from rapping. a sad moment indeed. all-in-all though, a good show
at a good venue.

notes: straight from the mouth of brandon mead: "i busted
out my new drums that i got earlier that day. elastic eight track
is former lead singer from bridge to canada and they were a much better
band than his old one. very pumpkins-esque. jackie blue was boring
except for the joplin cover and they left early on us. but ed fogged
the hell out of us and we had a lot of local artist support from wanderjahr,
pusherz, ,jeebus, elastic 8 track, caliope and more. . .plenty of
fuzzketeers witness a 20 minute version of loopy, the longest to date."
[obviously thanks mead]
03.01.03 - rubbles: mt. pleasant,
mi
other bands: wanderjahr
1st set: thick as thieves, me and the sea,
travis ate my atari, coldfeet, germany, $.10, e-life
2nd set: rock'n me (steve miller band),
raisins and rubberbands, the, in the sticks, big bottom (spinal tap),
genome project, paranoid (black sabbath), new song, dr. rewind, i
don't have one, walking with thee (clinic), whiskeydick, loopy/coldfeet
(reprise)
notes: this was the band's first show in
mt. pleasant, home of the central michigan university chippewas. the
students were on spring break, yet there was a pretty decent turnout
for the lansing bands. "germany" was introduced as "this
is a song about another country." before "$.10" nate
said, "this song is probably about chad." after e-life the
band took a break because they were offered one free beer each for
each set that they played. so they played two sets with a break in
between just long enough to get a beer. upon returning to the stage
they covered the steve miller band song "rock'n me" which
got the older folks up and gyrating. after the cover, "raisins
and rubberbands" was introduced as "this song is written
by the fuzz... which is us." nate was in a particularly chatty
mood and exclaimed, "don't worry folks, i got this one"
before "the" was played. "this song is written by someone
else as well" was said before playing the spinal tap rocker "big
bottom." nate described "genome project" as "this
is a song about a gnome who was evil (...) and then dan broke it."
the song started with a very loud sound from the drumkit which was
followed by brandon saying "nice one mead." the guys played
a song for their bill-mates wanderjahr, and needed to start it three
times before they got it right. it was a new song, without a title
yet. [edit: the new song is now titled "wait for science"]
afterwards nate claimed, "that song is about chad too,"
which was followed by "this song is about chad," with dan
adding, "definitely about chad," and brandon claiming, "this
song is about corunna." this lead into dr. rewind. chad, a card-carrying
fuzzkateer, was enjoying himself in the audience and responded to
all this attention by saying, "apparently i am the glue that
holds the band together." nate played and sang a short part of
mercury rev's "the dark is rising" before they played "i
don't have one," during which nate added some lyrics from an
eels tune (i think it was "last stop: this town"). he played
a little more of the mercury rev song afterwards, prompting cheers
to play the whole thing. mead responded that no one else knows it.
loopy is segued into a verse from coldfeet and then a few lyrics from
"sister christian" by night ranger. the band was told not
to use the fog machine, but they did, and it complimented the band
perfectly providing a nice atmosphere for their special space rock.
speshul ed got onstage for the final song and diffused fog directly
onto all of the bandmembers and their instruments leaving a wall of
vapor through the bar for a short time. the use of the fog machine
throughout the night lead to the sign at the entrance getting changed
from "wanderjahr wsg the fuzz" to "wanderjahr wsg the
fogg." clever. good show, good times.

03.14.03 - the
chicken shack: east lansing, mi
other bands: jeff raudebaugh, iminya, wanderjahr, the pusherz,
set:
notes: review sent to me by "sarah the great": a
celebration by any other name would not be as classic as a chicken
shack show, and the st. pat's celebration held true to that. the music
was scheduled to start at 9pm, with jeff raudebaugh, but as with all
chicken shack shows, it started considerably later. this marked the
beginning of a very long night. jeff went on about 10:30pm, and delighted
the then 15 people in attendance with his witty one-man show. he received
a great response from the audience, and a richard ashcroft request
from yours truly. at about 11pm, iminya showed up, along with their
entourage, or a large number of transient-type people claiming they
were with them. they took a long time to set up, and at least 30 minutes
were spent after they were "set up" trying to locate an
evidently lost 5-string bass. i make the distinction because they
were offered the use of a 6-string bass by one of the bands in attendance,
but the claim from them was "i can't play a 6-string bass".
luckily they finally found a bass guitar. they started playing at
around 12am, but with the dull roar created by their entourage, i
only heard snippets of their show. i was not overly impressed by what
i heard, but what do i know? the pusherz were on next, and put on
a show true to their reputation. the pusherz are a good house-party
band, and they went over well with the now considerable larger crowd.
one criticism is that they really need to learn some new songs, cause
i had heard everything they played. they're still pretty good guys,
and their entourage didn't cause any trouble with me or others. wanderjahr
went on fourth, and as always, their show was as i like to put it,
"a wall of sound". they're good guys who also don't start
any trouble, i like them more each time i see them. well, because
of the late start, and because the pusherz played, and played, and
played and played the fuzz didn't go on until 3am. by that time the
only beings in attendance were the hard-cores; myself, michele, ed,
jaci, jamie, trail mix dan, jmfd, alyssa, zillions, carrie, the movie
guys, a couple of the pusherz, and some random dudes (probably members
of iminya's posse). the fuzz, true to their fashion, rocked the basement
like it was going out of style! everyone was excited, tired and intoxicated
which only served to enhance the amount of dancing by fuzzkteers.
if i wasn't as drunk at the time, and it wasn't the middle of the
night, i probably could've remembered a set list. i do remember that
my ears had this ever-so-annoying ringing for two days afterwards,
a fuzz show symptom exhibited by many after the show. after a respectable
set, the music ended for st. pat's 2003 at 3:50am. i ended at 5:30am.

other bands: jeff raudebaugh, my cousin leonard
set: loopy, echo again, travis ate my atari, $.10, climbing
up the walls (radiohead), coldfeet, melt with you (modern english),
e-life, thick as thieves, me and the sea, lightning strikes the postman
(flaming lips), whiskeydick
notes: another review sent in by sarah: the night began with a
chill set from jeff raudebaugh. his performance, along with all in
attendance of the previous evening, reflected a much-needed break
from rawk. his set included the "cartwheel" song, a linda
ronstadt cover, the banjo song and a fuzz cover. michelelol expressed
her enjoyment of the "cartwheel" song by requesting repeatedly.
the second opener was the credit card hippy band my cousin leonard.
hailing from the detroit area, the three-man jam band performed as
expected. a severe lack of vocals, combined with three annoyingly
repetitive chords they knew, and a phobia of breaking between songs
made my cousin leonard as irritating as the stale killian's being
served on special. i made frequent requests for grateful dead tunes,
all which went unanswered. after 20 minutes of straight playing, this
conversation occured. . .
sarah: "hey brandon, when is my cousin leonard going to stop
playing?"
brandon:"in about an hour."
luckily nate was all hopped up on sugar as well as being deficit of
sleep, and served as an excellent form of entertainment. a liter of
vanilla coke served as his weapon of mass destruction that night,
with much of it ending up in the pitchers of beer dan and ed each
possessed. he also had his hair done in some ever-so-sexy pigtails,
and even dusted himself in pixie stix (yeah, the candy). this was
after the multiple shots of vanilla coke. never a dull moment at churchill's.
the fuzz played a solid set, even though exhaustion
ran rampant throughout the band. it included classics such as "travis
ate my atari," "coldfeet," "whiskeydick,"
"e-life," "in the sticks," "genome project,"
and ".10cent." also included were covers "melt with
you" by modern english, and "lightning strikes the postman"
by the flaming lips. sans the hangovers, a good night was had by all.

and it rocked. during the cover of "where is my mind" by
the pixies this hallucinating hippy appeared from nowhere and proceeded
to kneel in front of the gnomes in front of the stage and worship
them until the song's end. former fuzz drummer eric "the jester"
mckay reunited with his old bandmates onstage and played tambourine
for "i don't have one". fog, slides, friends, and rock!-

notes: quite possibly the worst show ever. after waiting around
for the kinetic stereo kids to get everything and everyone there to
play their set, the fuzz prepared to play a little later than expected.
also not living up to expectations, was the extremely sparse crowd.
the bartender then told the band that since no one was there, the
owner wanted to close down and told them not to even play. the few
loyal fans there demanded a couple songs and the fuzz performed a
pretty disgruntled set of covers and fuzzkateer favorites. "raisins
and rubberbands" was played for myself, and "me and the
sea" was for fuzzkateer pat. "sweet caroline" and "sober"
were covered, but the mood had already been ruined by the whole situation.
ann arbor should consider itself lucky and fortunate if the fuzz ever
decide to play this town again.
