Thanks for the info on the free epocrates, Reid. Awesome!
Saturday, June 09, 2007 -- 14:06:01 (EDT)
Name: Reid -- Email: ReidWings@aol.com
Two things:
First: I'm selling a MacBook Pro laptop if anyone is interested. It's 2Ghz intel core duo, 80GB, 1GB RAM, DVD burner, built in web cam.
Second, and more important:
FREE epocrates for a year:
1. go to http://www.cardiosource.com/register.asp and create an account for free
2. go to http://www.cardiosource.com/mobileresources/index.asp and look for the Epocrates Essentials section (4th one down).
3. Follow the instructions (the download link from that site doesn't work, but check your email after you selected for the Epocrates Essentials. the email link through the actual Epocrates site works).
4. Follow the instructions from the email. You will put the code they email you into the coupon code section and it will reduce the epocrates price from $150 to $0.
Enjoy!

HFH ER was one of my top 3 (if not my favorite) rotations of med school. Helped me decide to try to move to a place like Miami Beach. That said...what was I thinking, moving far away?! If I survive hurricane season, please come visit!

Re: HFH ER, you probably already know HFH rotaters are exempt from the ER end-of-month exam, significant plus. The rotation requires 20 8-hour shifts, they usually sent me home an hour early. Parking sucks during your week of day shifts. Otherwise, I did mine in April, and was allowed/encouraged to do multiple: intubations, central lines, art-lines. The opportunity existed to do LPs, though I didn't do any. I really liked 75% of the residents, about 60% of the attendings.

St Joes is a decent place. You don't have to write notes, present to the attending, or do much of anything. The only drawback is that this gets very boring, and you feel like you spent the last 10 hrs of your shift accomplishing nothing. But I've found that this drawback doesn't really concern too many slackers. Beaumont is another good option. I think the shifts are 8 hours, but I could be wrong. Beaumont requires a longer drive too.

so as per the LRC, while you are able to have mail that is sent to your @umich.edu account forwarded to wherever by using the directory.umich.edu website (I've set mine to forward to Manoj's new email address since he was so kind as to spam the class with it), there is no way to have your groupwise email (@med.umich.edu) forwarded. So if any of you have people sending mail there, be sure to give them your contact info, or just have them take out the "med." from the address.

Blockbuster and Netflix each have their advantages. Blockbuster lets you get free in-store rentals, but Netflix has faster turnover time (it usually only takes 1 day to travel by mail each way, as opposed to 2-3 for blockbuster). Also, Netflix is migrating their collection to a "Watch Now" option that lets you watch them on your computer. That's even better than having to drive to the store.
Yes, I love being an M4.

I might start a firestorm with this, but oh well. The Supreme Court upheld the "partial birth abortion" law. No matter your views on abortion, this was a poorly written law with extremely questionable basis in scientific fact, and is alarming considering it is actually regulating how a doctor does a procedure, by lawmakers who are not doctors. Read the text of the law at http://www.theorator.com/bills108/s3.html .

ABC reports more baby girls are being born.
ABC World News (4/9, story 12, 2:10, Gibson) reported, "We noticed a new study today, that look says the proportion of baby boys being born has been falling." ABC (Berman) added, "According to the study out today, since 1970, the ratio of boys being born in the U.S., has dipped by two-tenths of a percent. That may not sound like much. But over 30-plus years, it adds up to 135,000 fewer baby boys. ... The study authors say they're not sure why this is happening. But there could be some serious factors at work." Dr. Lovell Jones, Anderson Cancer Center, was shown saying, "I think the real issue in this is the increase environmental pollutants." Berman continued, "Certain chemicals in pesticides might determine hormones that determine a baby's sex. Other factors might include the parents' age, obesity and alcohol." ABC did not provide the source of the study.
Really? Hormones that determine a baby's sex?? 135,000 of these boy-->girls over the past 30+ years??? I call BS!

There's precident for it. Typhoid Mary ended up living out the rest of her days in a small house on a prison island. Pretty similar scenario: public danger and refuses to take appropriate measures (she kept cooking for people and not washing her hands). This is totally different from say Cuban AIDS quarantine because the transmission is easy and there's such an easy way to prevent spread (e.g. mask) that the person refuses to use.

And if so, does that mean we have to rent cap/gown/hood for this in addition to our own graduation?

The wound vac was supposedly invented here, I don't recall who did it. But, more importantly, class of 1884 Dr. Herman W. Mudgett (AKA. Dr. H. H. Holmes) was considered the Jack the Ripper of Chicago. Wikipedia has a nice description under his alias.

Examples: Child-Turcotte-Pugh cirrhosis classification system, ECMO & incentive spirometry (Bartlett), Greenfield filter (yeah, I only know our surgical trivia).
