  • Social security welfare, new deal cultural programs, minimum wage laws, 4 terms as president, attempt to undermine the power of the Supreme Court, government control of power companies, and coerced charity all led to unprecedented government interference and growth. FDR did more to damage the Constitution, democracy, and capitalism than any other American in the 20th century, bar none. The Democrats' greatest hero was a blatant Socialist and a threat to America. Under FDR's dictatorship, the world saw the rise of Hitler, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, increasing American meddling in foreign affairs, and repeated intelligence failures by FDR himself that ultimately led to the Cold War.

  • And what's with Dooley trying to show off that he's at a military base- we all know the Air Force is to the military as Ronnie was to presidents (take it how you like).
Just kidding Dooley- I just spent my birthday getting immunizations and marching in formation. Anyway- Hoo-ah!!

  • It is also unfortunate that people come to a forum like this and expect a serious political debate. Sorry to disappoint you Grant. Lighten up! If not, I'll have to send swarnick to plant flowers and rainbows in your locker.

Reagan couldn't hold FDR's jock. I think that's the level of maturity you're going to find on this site. It's certainly the level you will receive from me :)

  • Sparky I am disappointed at the unfounded arguments you present and the blatant insults you spew about Reagan. In bipartisan politics it is unfortunate that there are those among us who don't think before they open their mouth, saying any unfounded thing to discredit and smear the opposition. Breaking the air traffic controllers strike was necessary for the safety of travelers, and Reagan began a new policy with the USSR that involved open communication with Gorbachev while staunchly opposing the immorality of absolutism and Marxism. He also denied knowledge of weapons trafficking and was never found responsible. I won't defend his AIDS policies, as I disagree with them, but when has there ever been a president who has been beyond all criticism? Reagan is definately with FDR as one of the top two presidents of the century.

Regarding the graphical anomalies at the top of the page, I'm not really sure what's going on with that, ESPN just seems to funnel its content onto our site at random times. ;-)

  • One more post, cause I need a study break!

I agree with most everything said already with a few observations:
I think it is really easy for us to say the new curriculum is good, great, orgasmic, whatever. We don’t really know any better because it is the only curriculum we’ve had. It did seem successful with the exception of embryology—-which many people had some level of difficulty. They will rectify that for us next year and will teach it differently to the new M1’s. With that said, we are far from the only school using an organ-based organization and it’s actually not the first time it has been taught like this at UM—as stated “off the record” by some of our more senior professors (it is the old-old-old-curriculum, again). The reality is this: no matter the order, the material that must be covered is the same. And, if you have a collection of reasonably bright students, they will succeed in spite of what the administration tries to do. The real test will be when we take step 1 and how we do on the wards. Since we went through almost the same material as the students before us, just in less time, we’ll do well.
As far as stress, it is less stressful than other schools that give weekly quizzes (Hopkins springs to mind). I had a few acquaintances that had matriculated there and they were much bitchier than I see any of us being (overall). I do think that most of us are stressed to some level, it’s medical school after all! I think it’s better to say that our stress levels are within personally acceptable limits. I know I’m more stressed in school than when I’m sitting on the beach in Cayman, no matter what sequence it is. Oddly enough, weekly quizzes actually help by keeping a more even tone of stress level. That’s why we don’t have what other schools call “Black Monday.” And that’s a good thing!
I don’t think anyone has fully responded to your second question with a description of what the old curriculum was like. (This plays into my first point.) It was taught with a structure more akin to college: Here is ALL of Anatomy, Here is all of embryology, Here is all of molecular and cellular biology, and so on. The one most notable difference between the old and new curricula is anatomy lab runs through most of the year instead of just the first few months. Better? Worse? I really think it’s a draw with anatomy. The rest (except maybe embryo) “seemed” better for the changes.
No matter what, UM has a great reputation and it keeps getting better! (For good reason.)

  • I'll post too :)

1)YES (with enthusiasm), minus the fact that I do not think I have learned my embryology this year.
2)The new curriculum also sections off our clinical skills into one week blocks separate from the science-based sequences. There are also longitudinal cases (basically problem-based learning), and the infamous Family Centered Experience. E-mail me if you have specific questions about these.
3)I have been stressed by academics in two sequences (neuro and musculoskeletal), which were the most work. Other then that, I think most of us are not stressed - we keep busy (and usually with lots of activities outside of the classroom), but I know I am not walking around ready to burst at any second. Weekly quizzes are a pain, but they keep me honest with my study habits.
4)No ranking in first year, no grades. After that there is grading, and we are ranked for our deans letters (for residency applications) by quartiles in the class, not individually. I think this is accurate.

Good luck making your decision :)

  • although it's totally natural to want to know about the curriculum, if you're wanting to know to compare UM to another school, it's probably not worth your time. you're probably better off making your decision based on which school feels like the place that you can be happiest based on the happiness and personality of the students, location, and whatever other factors you want to make up on the grand rubric. but the curricula, i'm not sure how important that REALLY is. at every top 10-15 med school, you're going to be working fairly hard because you don't want to fail your boards. they're going to teach roughly the same material, because it's medicine. saying that, UM's new curriculum is probably a very good balance of anything you'd want in a curriculum. honestly, the weekly quizzes are a pain in the tail, and sometime in mid-winter you're going to scream and wish you had a weekend off. but then again, i take my quizzes at 6 AM every Sunday night. there are plenty of kids who take them 6 PM on Friday as well. it all comes down to your personal preference and personality. hope that helps, and good luck!

  • 1. for the most part, yes.
    2. systems based integrated approach m1, shuffling of sequence order in m2. finish m2 in march instead of may. thesis requirement for entering class of 2004.
    3. sometimes. weekly quizzes, with exams every 2-3 weeks keeps us from being too behind and overwhelmed, but also keeps us in a low level amount of stress at all times.
    4. m1 year is graded pass/fail with no rankings that i know of. m2 and beyond are graded honors/hp/p/f; not sure if rankings are made at this point or not.

(1) Do you like the new curriculum? (2) What makes it different than the old curriculum? (3) Is U of M stressful? (4) How are the students evaluated? Are they ranked?

Thank you so much for your time and for your help.

  • I stopped in to see the MCC people today and I got a slightly better story. For most of us, the added cost of the "utilities" will be in place of a normal rent increase. So instead of getting a $50 rent increase this year, our rent will stay the same (for most people) and there will only be the added cost for utilities. They do have projections for each size apartment based on the last two year's usage. For my single, they estimate that it'll cost $25-50 a month depending on gas usage. Hope that helps people! They also said they hoped to have our new lease info to us by the end of the week.

  • Since there seems to be some chatter about housing...I should share a rumor that the UM family housing is considering opening up some of the townhouses in Northwood 4 and/or 5 to students (and you don’t even have to pose as domestic partners.) Rent is very reasonable and the busses are pretty convenient. I know in NW 5 there are several 3 bedroom townhouses which have been vacant all year. If you’re interested, you should call them or e-mail them (frequently) to let them know there is interest out there.

  • an addendum to karishma's comment: i asked the manager if they have any cost projection analyses for the proposed changes, and she told me that she wouldn't have the numbers yet. but she said that she'd be happy to schedule an appointment to talk about it when i re-sign my lease. when i asked her why she couldn't tell me, she said that she was waiting for the company to get back to her.

when i asked her if the rent was going up, she said she didn't know. she said, "well, i mean, they're doing this, so they'll probably not raise it." three weeks ago, she said that they were definitely raising it.

my suggestions... move if you have the means. they're being very shady about this.

  • hi guys, i'm an m2 and i don't know if any of you know this but i posted this on our comment ground so i thought i'd let you guys know too....

FYI - for those living at med center court -
they haven't told anyone yet but they're changing the terms of our lease. we're going to be responsible for gas, water, waste water, trash removal fee and a "nominal" adminstrative fee to take care of all of these charges. basically they're going to average each "unit's" useage and then split it up by the number of occupants for water/waste water and by square footage for gas charges and then bill us every month. so for those of us on random away rotations and considering how little time we're going to actually be in our apartments next year we're going to be paying for the rest of the buildings usages. they haven't told us but they are going to add it, i got a preliminary info flyer on it which you can get from the main office if you ask for it, they don't volunteer that to you.

just thought i'd let those know who might have time/initiative if they wanted to leave. oh by the way from what i've heard, our rent is not going down (as it should since technically all of this they paid for previously and now we are going to) it's most likely going to go up - no "official" word though....

Who thought syphilis just went away,
    He believed that a chancre,
    Was only a canker,
That healed in a week and a day.

But now he has “acne vulgaris” --
    (Or whatever they call it in Paris);
On his skin it has spread,
From his feet to his head,
And his friends want to know where his hair is.

There’s more to his terrible plight,
His pupils won’t close in the light,
    His heart is cavorting,
    His wife is aborting,
And he squints through his gun-barrel sight

    Arthralgia cuts into his slumber;
    His aorta is in need of a plumber;
    But now he has tabes,
    And saber-shinned babies.
While of gummas he has quite a number.

He’s been treated in every known way,
But his spirochetes won’t go away,
    He developed paresis,
    Has long talks with Jesus,
And thinks he’s the Queen of the May.

The switch to Daylight Savings Time on Sunday -- when the clocks move forward and you lose an hour of sleep -- could be dangerous for people who already suffer from a lack of sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

Losing that extra hour of sleep this weekend could push some of those people over the edge, making it risky for them to drive or perform other tasks that require concentration and alertness.

  • I just posted an eye anatomy pics word document - it's nothing special (just some copied and pasted eye pics from the anatomy website). By the way - Wendy's chili is surprisingly nutritional. Go to www.wendys.com and you can plan your ideal meal. I don't recommend looking up the Single with Cheese, chicken nuggets, frosty, and fries meal. Not so hot.

Also, anyone still trying to figure out what the heck are horizontal and vertical gaze (if anyone really cares)…cause I just didn’t know what the $4!+ they were talking about…I found two short movies that made it make some sense. (Also in the shared directory) Too bad they don’t get our lecture materials from the web, there’s lots of GOOD stuff out there.

House is convenient to the Hospital, North &ampampamp Central campus. Close to grocery stores, gym, walking distance to many parks, Leslie Golf Course.
Bus lines: Steps away from #1 &ampampamp 1U AATA buses that take you directly to downtown/Central Campus and hospital. Runs weekdays 6:30am-10:30pm and weekends 8:30am-6:30pm.
Easy commute: ~ 5 minutes by car, 8-10 minutes by bike to either North or Central Campus.

  • If you really want to stay in NYC, then the NYC schools are definitely more favorable for that--just look at their match lists. That said, it is still should not be a significant problem matching in NYC **DEPENDING** on what you're looking for. For example, if you're looking for ortho at HSS in Manhattan, then your chances are slim regardless of where you are. The unfortunate truth is that U-M is not as well recognized on the East or West coasts(just ask a doc in any nyc hospital and the response will be mixed). I'd advise you to go post on the M3 page because they're starting to think about residency apps now and they have a very active comment ground.

  • I wouldn't worry about coming to Michigan as something that would put you at a disadvantage for NYC residencies. While NYC is obviously a popular locale, it's definitely not on par with the West Coast in that regard. It definitely shouldn't be a problem for you if you are originally from NYC, have ties to NYC, and make that known to the programs you're applying to. Some specialties are more "regional" than others - i.e. coming from a midwest school most of your interviews may come from the midwest in highly competitive fields, but if you're thinking about any of the primary care fields and even general surgery, NYC should not be an issue.

Anyhoo, I'll just remind ya'll that it's a good idea to check out the Shared Folder for any updates/useful handouts because the files don't get linked immediately. BTW, I've made the PQ Answers for the Respiratory seq Anatomy Labs. No Learning modules this round thankfully.

They rock the fight song after we score, and the whole place is singing HAIL TO THE VICTORS... it's awesome. Michigan connections everywhere... Joe's sports bar will be filled with michigan fans too. it's a lot larger though with something like 8 full screen projection screens in this one huge room alone. Although b/c it's so big, sometimes pesky U of I fans or Florida fans (people who think the orange/blue is a cool color combination) tend to invade.of course bar food... hot turkey sandwich.. ooh la la.

  • Oh i thought i'd be okay not going to the rose bowl, save a ton of money, and I've already been. BUT i'm ITCHING to see one more mighty exciting michigan football game. Soooo....anyone else short on cash and interested in driving with me to cali??? I BET NOT....BUT LISTEN! We'd depart from chicag, we can take my car, fit up to 4(preferably 3), and watch DVDs the whole way there. We'd drive during the night, take 2 hours shifts.... so after every movie we switch drivers. All in all, we save tons of money b/c we split gas, and if you ride with me... you can also have free housing at my aunt's unoccupied beach house in laguna beach. (ok, i don't know if it's unoccupied on those dates yet, but i just sent her the email asking if I could stay there.) Can it get any better? Yes! watch the game, rush the field, and wear shorts in the middle of winter! We'll have a barbecue on the beach, invite all the m1s over, chilling out as the sun goes down while donned in "flip flops, tank tops, nothing really fancy." (what song is that from?)

We also noticed that you were trying to slip some subliminal messages into our lecture by playing really bad Ohio music during our lecture Wednesday (as Meredith pointed out to me - watch the first 15 minutes of his lecture video - ARGH - I didn't know you could sing about Put-In-Bay).
Too bad the Thugeyes won't be able to take down Michigan. I just hope Navarre wears his throat guard so that he doesn't suffer any accidental throat jabs on Saturday.
Also - is it just me, or is it a coincidence that one of the Luckeyes best players is Gamble?

  • Ok. I've lurked long enough on these "private" pages, often times being a regular and frequent contributor to the original class pages for the classes of the current M2s (who have about as much life as a bowl of left-over oatmeal) and the M3s (who have a little more of "a life". So now I interject... privately, unofficially, nothing to do with my "job" as a faculty member.OSU will stop U-M. Navarre will be shut-down (except for a few short passes), Chris Gamble will be a part of killing the bomb. OSU has won by slim margins for the last 2 years, but they are "Tresselized" and will pull it out when they need to. And for those of you who think OSU fans are so rude! Oh, horrible. I've been here for 25-something years (saw Woody and Bo go head to head), and U-M fans are just as obnoxious and otherwise horrible as any fans anywhere else in the Big 10 (OK, not Northwestern, cuz they're too smart to do that). Give me a break. Read the Columbus papers and they're just as "afraid" of Michigan fans as you are of the Buckeye rooters.Go BUCKS. Hail to the Maize and BLAH. OSU will take it by 3, and LLLLLoyd Carrrrrrr will find every excuse to say why Michigan didn't win.ShlaferPS: Can I vote in the Jason, Katherine, Susannah, Matt contest? For what it's worth, I'll give my vote to Susannah, and that's meant as a compliment to Susannah. (I'm not a big personal fan of Seinfeld, Allison Janney (or most anyone from "West Wing"), or the Unabomber.FWIW, and apropos West Wing: I've been told that I'm a "lot like" Toby Ziegler from West Wing.... only Toby is apparently nicer, more mentally stable, and more laid back than I am. He's also, apparently, a stinking liberal, and that's where the comparison really ends.

  • This is from mgoblue.com. Take that OSU - your band's claim to fame is a Maize and Blue creation. Ha ha!
And though it is loath to admit it, Ohio State's marching band can thank its rival, the Michigan Marching Band, for its famed formation, the "Script Ohio." The Michigan band first performed the formation in 1932 at Ohio Stadium to honor the relationship between the two universities. Not surprisingly, given that the rivalry between the two bands is every bit as intense as the one between the two teams, there is no mention in any history of the Ohio State band that its most famous formation was invented and first performed by Michigan.

Med students can join it by "JOIN"ing through the membership link on the My Workspace page

I've recently also added a window that lists contact info for all the various clubs/organizations so that it appears in the former worksite info box. Anatomy resources I've uploaded on to the M1 shared folder can also be found on the resources link on the Student clubs Page.

After finishing our lovely week of Physical Diagnois 1, it is time to evaluate and give feedback on this module to everybody's favorite CFM head honcho, Dr. Lash. Please send me feedback, positive and negative. Here are two comments that I have received from people regarding this sequence:
    1) It would have made more sense to have the musculoskeletal exam lecture BEFORE Tuesday, rather than on Wednesday after we had already tried this exam on one another.
2)There was confusion on start times for lectures and small groups. Is everything in clinical week starting 10 minutes later than posted, or just lectures? We need more uniformity in Michigan time in clincial weeks.
That's about all that I have heard so far, so please e-mail me any additional good or bad remarks :)

  • Why can't stuff be named systematically? Like most medial starts at #1, and goes up laterally, then letters starting at A goes superficial to deep. Leg nerve 1a, 1b, leg nerve 2a, 2b leg nerve 3. I bet the practical for that would be pretty simple. Also, why can't the body itself be more systematic? The brachial plexus looks like a mess. It should all be straight without all those articulations and criss-crossing and all that other nonsense. I'm sure it's possible to straighten out all those nerves as they grow in development. That's where I'd put federal grants... cure for cancer can wait.

I'll take him (or her - I won't be afraid to take on a woman in this case) and fight them in a dark alley (it has to be a dark alley- dark because I don't want to be know as that-guy-who-kicked-the-muscle-bone-inventor's-booty, and an alley because that provides the proper level of sketchiness for this encounter). After I have my way with that person (not sexually - we'll save that for the other jerk who invented nerves, veins, and arteries), I will sleep in, watch college football guilt free all day, and live a happy life. • Guys, just a reminder that our yahoo fantasy basketball draft is set for Friday night. If people would prefer an auto-draft instead of a live draft, let me know and I'll change it if we have enough people who want one or the other.

Also, to people who haven't signed up yet, the league ID is 26565, and I changed the password to something easy for you guys... 0000. There is still space in the league so sign up for a season's worth of trash talking.

    Third Time's A Charm!
Tyler Fredrickson made a 38-yard field goal to end a third crazy overtime as California upset No. 3 Southern California 34-31 Saturday. Ryan Killeen, who tied it with a 33-yard field goal for the Trojans with 16 seconds left in regulation, missed a 39-yarder moments before Fredrickson's kick. The teams played three madcap extra periods featuring a fumble, a blocked field goal and outstanding passing by both quarterbacks. The temporary lighting installed at Memorial Stadium for the afternoon start was at full power when the game ended in near-dark. Fredrickson ran to midfield and slid on his knees after the kick - and he was soon engulfed by the Cal student section and thousands more in the huge crowd, which stormed the field." -LL

I think a new poll should be about nicknames for all the Michael's because there are like 10 of us. I don't want to buy a whole season by myself, and it would be great to have like 10-12 people to share 3 or 4 season hockey tickets. If you haven't been to a Michigan Hockey Game - they are an experience (think football game loudness times 100, with a lot more creatively worded chants). e-mail me - I think we have to order tickets soon!

  • I posted before, but if anyone is willing to trade their Ohio St ticket I will give you my ticket (sect 31) to Notre Dame+another game of YOUR choice (this is negotiable). Otherwise I'll sell the ND ticket. Non-BigTen grads (i.e., Mike H): we pitied Penn St and allowed them to join our conference to make 11. Before that, Michigan St replaced UofChicago if you can believe that.

  • If you are a Comcast cable subscriber or plan to be, there is a comcast promotion for high-speed internet, $19.99/month for six months (~$42.95 afterwards). This promotion does not include installation, or the $3.00/mo cable modem rental. This might be a good option for those of you who are planning to get cable TV anyway and would like to take advantage of having high-speed internet at home as well. As far as we know, the offer ends July 31, so make sure to get that set up before then.

Occasionally I go downtown (the big D) to see the Detroit Symphony Orchestra perform various concerts. I go every other month or so, and I invite people to come along with me. We usually have a group of about 25 students go, and we meet up for dinner beforehand and sometimes drinks afterwards. Last year we listened to Beethoven's Ode to Joy, Mozart's Requiem, Chopin, and a few others.
On Friday, August 8, there will be a DSO performance of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony, Piano Concerto, and his famous 1812 Overture (complete with fireworks and cannons!). It's at Meadow Brook (outdoor ampitheater), and group tickets are only $11 for lawn seats. If you're interested in going, email me at dkrochma@umich.edu (nonbinding, I just neen an approximate count for right now). I look forward to meeting all of you, and keep a look out for future DSO emails!

There is free laundry and parking and it is within walking distance to the medical school. Rent is somewhere around 550 a month but may be less because the room is smaller than the upstairs rooms. Utilities are additional but You would be living with two very cool m2's so it would be split three ways. One great place to get furniture is at: marketplace.umich.edu Unfortunately, you need a Umich uniquename and password to log in, which you probably do not have unless you went here for undergrad. Fortunately, you can furnish your entire place really cheap with some nice stuff. So especially if you're coming from far away (say California) and driving in a big U-haul doesn't appeal to you, just save your money and buy the stuff here.

I'm a laid back guy, looking for a two bedroom place. Three's fine too. I like to keep things decently clean, and I try to cook when I have time (although I do get lazy about that sometimes). • Actually, I just cut and pasted what one of my buddies wrote to me. :) But the "addict" is carpeted on the inside and may actually be home to two people as "he's" big enough. "He's" also rather cool even in the summertime.

Just to add some info-All 4 of us are laid back who like to lift, golf, play basketball, intramural flag football, play GTA, go out to Dominicks, Ricks, Touchdowns, Mitch's, Royal Oak, Detroit, Windsor, Vegas, Chicago..you get the picture.
I also want to clarify that the house is closer than 10 minutes to the medical school, it's actually about 5 minutes, and definitely a more direct route than from the med ghetto(trust me, I lived there for 3 years). It's half a block from the CCRB(not 5 minutes)and also about 65 paces from Mitch's on South University. You don't need a car but there is parking. Also, most importantly, we have tons and tons of experience about the things that you actually have to study for and don't during medical school. Good luck and most importantly.............don't be a gunner.

  • "Addict" and "Attic" both come from the Latin word "Atticus" meaning "beyond reach." The two meanings were included in the same word (attic) until the 12th century when "addict" spun off to reflect its other meaning as a person who abuses substances. Raj was merely showing us his knowledge of classical English.

  • Hey everyone,
Welcome to Ann Arbor. Three M4s and an M3 have a room available in a large house for the coming year, and we thought we'd offer it to the incoming M1s first since we know finding good housing in Ann Arbor can be difficult. Read on if interested:

    Your roommates:
We're all guys. Prefer another male for our roommate, but this isn't set in stone.
Three M4's, all taking the coming year off from medical school to pursue other interests.
An M3, returning from a year of research.
All very friendly. Enjoy active social life and life outside of medical school. (part of the reason we're living in this house, read on.)

    The house:
Huge, beautiful blue house on central campus. Away from "the medical school ghetto" (believe us, this is a GOOD thing), yet still very close to everything, including med-school (see below).

Five large bedrooms, plus huge semi-finished basement (easily livable + much storage), plus huge, nice, addict.
We're looking to have five (maybe six) guys living here, although during the past school year, 7 guys easily lived in the house, 5 in the bedrooms, 1 in addict (really a huge master bedroom) and 1 in basement.

Washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, cable/internet access in all rooms, TWO porches (one on the front entrance, one off a bedroom above) perfect for grilling, reading, tailgates, etc.

    2 bath.

    Location:
PERFECT location in Ann Arbor. Five minutes walk from S. University Ave, and all of the assorted coffee shops, eateries, stores, bars, normal people, and other things that central campus has to offer. Won't get this in the student ghetto, we know cause we've been there.

Five minutes walk from the CCRB (central campus recreation building), with weightroom, basketball courts, raquetball, pool, etc. etc.

Ten minute walk, 5 minute bike ride, 70 second drive, from medical school.

Ten minute walk to the diag, heart of central campus and libraries.

Despite being centrally located, still a pretty quite area far enough from bars. etc.

    Parking:
Five parking spots come with the house. Rare in Ann Arbor.

    Perks:
    Free advice/books/etc. from your roommates.

    Price:
We negotiated and brought the price down with management. About $650/person/month with 5 people, less with 6 people.

    If interested:
    email Siavash Jabbari: sjabbari@umich.edu

If you are around and want to see the house in the next couple of weeks, email:
    Raj Rajani: rrajani@umich.edu
    Dorian Ramirez: dramirez@umich.edu

    Have a great year!

I would tr to find a place myself, but I am currently out of the country and will not be returning until August 2nd. So if there is anyone that is looking for a roommate, I might be our guy. Little about myself.... I'm a 22 year old African American male. Originally from Battle Creek, MI...grduated from U of M in april 2002...worked towards getting my Masters at Indiana School of medicine for the past year....currenty doing research in the Phillipines for the summer (great place to visit by the way).....into sports (football, baseball in high school, intermural sports etc.)...really easy going guy. really check it out - it seemed to me like a good way to meet a lot of people (including upperclass peeps) in
a dorm-like situation, but with more privacy - plus, it's a great deal (less than $400 for a double incl.
utilities, laundry, internet, AND parking..plus the clubhouse is pretty nice).

ok, more about me. im 22, originally from downriver, michigan, but graduated from swarthmore in 2002 and have spent my 'year off' doing a fulbright in bangkok, where i work at an hiv/aids clinic and do counseling. i'm kinda messy (but in my own space), dont smoke, and
am really in to social justice/activism, asian culture/languages, and good food. i figure anyone going to med school has got to be a nerd, but i definitely like to have a good time...work hard, play harder. so yeah, email me..to check out the house, email ian (ibutler@umich.edu)!

I'm 21, originally from Las Vegas, but coming to UMich by way of Vanderbilt University and Madison, WI (research last year). I'm easygoing (but disciplined when it comes to studying), quiet, and pretty organized, and I don't have any particular preference in terms of location or number of roommates (I will need some sort of parking, though). I'm hoping to make it to Ann Arbor in July sometime to secure living arrangements (I'm in LV right now). I'm a non-smoker and a pet-lover (not owner). I love to watch and participate in sports and hang out with friends when I get a chance. If anybody is interested in rooming with me, please e-mail me at the address above. • Hey guys-

I'm an incoming M1 but I'm spending the summer in Ann Arbor. I just got my email setup, and I'll try to explain how I went about doing it. I think it'd probably be quite a bit harder to get it done if you aren't physically in Ann Arbor, because there's physical paperwork and signatures and things like that that you have to do.

First, I had to get a "uniqname", which is essentially just a login name for the UM computer system. Practically anybody can get a uniqname, but it doesn't really give you any computer privileges by itself. I got mine by filling out a simple form at the learning resource center (LRC) - you guys all saw it on your tour (that's where they did the computer demo). All you need for that is a social security number.

After that, you have to get a "Basic Computer Package." That gives you email access and probably a couple other things that I have yet to discover. This will require the UM ID number that you got with your enrollment deposit form. I called the Office of Student Programs to get that, but I think they kind of made an exception for me since I'm working here over the summer. Several of the secretaries that I encountered along the way said that I won't/shouldn't get one until Orientation.

My name is Priya Saigal, and I will be an M1. Roshni, who posted earlier, and I are planning on living in Nielsen Square condos through a private leaser whom I got in touch with while I was visiting Ann Arbor. We are looking for a third female roommate. The condos are beautiful, and there are two bedrooms sharing a full bath, and a den with half bath attached downstairs (nice and private), which is perfect for three. It is 1400 square feet and located between Med Center Court and Island Dr apts, so right in the middle of where many med students will live. If you are interested in rooming with us there, send me an email. About me, I am 22 years old, I study hard, but definitely love to chill with friends and socialize. I love college sports, cooking, running, dancing, shopping, and art. I am neat and organized and laid back. Roshni has posted earlier, so you can read a bit about her as well. If you're looking for a good, clean, modern, fun place to live for 2 years (since it will be likely a 2 year lease) let us know! Congrats and enjoy the rest of your summers! I look forward to meeting everyone!

I can't even tell you how helpful it was to have the support of the older students. I lived in Nu Sigma Nu my first year, thinking that it would be a one year cost saving thing and now i am pretty sure i will stay for all four years. Phi Rho, Phi Chi, and Nu Sig all have some really great members, each house has its unique strengths, all are the best deals you will find in ann arbor. • Dave, Nielsen Square is actually composed of condos not apartments. I looked up the number for you, if you are interested in buying one-- (734) 761-4758. If you want to rent one some private owners and real estate companies are renting them out and you would have to contact them separately-- they usually post their phone numbers in the windows of the unit. Some people a few entries below have actually posted that they are living in Nielsen Square and are looking for roommates-- you might want to contact them. Hope this helps.

  • I wanted to re-post my message from a few weeks ago (with a few additions). I am a future M1 looking for 3 roommates (male, female, or mixed ?I have a few people who have tentatively agreed but nothing definite) to share a four bedroom condo at Nielsen Square located just off Maiden Lane (5 minute walk to the Medical Center), right next to the Island Drive Apartments. It is really nice, spacious, and new (with washer-dryer, dishwasher, parking, etc...), all for a really good (and semi-negotiable) deal. Basically, it is a little strange because it will most-likely be four strangers living there, but it could be really fun if I can come up with a group of compatible people. About me: I am a 22 year old female, originally from Ann Arbor but went to school out east (Wesleyan undergrad, spent the last year teaching in NYC). I am fairly easy to get along with; like to cook, run, and hang-out with friends. Please e-mail if you are interested in learning more about the place. Also, I will be visiting Ann Arbor as soon as I get out of school (the first week in July) and would love to show the place to any/all interested people at that time.

  • Allright folks. it's time.
This is THE year! The Wolverines are ranked #5 in the preseason espn football poll, and you now have the once in a lifetime opportunity to get a curbside view of our run to the NATIONAL TITLE! Where will you be on November 22, 2003? Will you be in the solitude of a study room, sipping chamomille tea, swaying to the sounds of Chopin? OR- WILL YOU BE AT THE MAIN EVENT? MICHIGAN VS. OHIO STATE. In the crisp fall air, picture the little whisps of warm breaths shooting up all around you as you stand shouting on your feet with 107,000 other michigan fans....ONE PURPOSE ONE GOAL. When we take Ohio State down on that historic afternoon, will you be rushing the field with us? Will you be a part of the MAD CROWD RUSHING down South University and onto the lawn of the President's house? Will you sprint around campus with students, run into all the libraries and shout at the top of your lungs--- Hail to the Victors Valiant. Hail to the CONQUERING HEROES. HAIL! HAIL! TO MICHIGAN - The CHAMPIONS OF THE WEST.
Either you're a part of history-- or you watch it on tv. So where will you be?
We have until Friday, June 27 to purchase season tickets. 7 home games for $142 highlighted by Notre Dame and Ohio State. Email me and let me know if you want to get tickets together, and I can email you back with more details on how this will all work. We'll probably go in 2 groups-- to get the best seating priority, those with accumulated Michigan credit hours will probably be one group, and those w/o credit hours will be in another.
    Let me know!

  • I'm looking for someone to share a 2 bed, 2 bath condo on Huron Pkwy at Washtenaw. You would have your own bedroom and private bath as well as use of a small washer/dryer in the unit. The condo is an attractive top floor unit that backs up against a heavily treed area with a small stream (I'm trying to figure out a way to kayak to class :-) ). It is in a nice neighborhood and a short walk to new shopping centers and a bus stop with direct service to the med center.

Technically I will be your "landlord" which should be a plus because I am beyond flexible with things like rental agreements and the term of a lease. Rent and utilities are negotiable (especially if you're a weirdo like Julie and actually enjoy doing dishes), but I can guarantee that it will be much more affordable than anything in the white coat ghetto. I'm looking for a non-smoker, but otherwise I don't have a lot of requirements. I don't have a mother that will kill me for living with a female, so I don' t have a gender preference. If you have a kitty that won't tear up my furniture, that would be fine. I will probably be bringing a small snake with me, but he won't bother you so there's no reason to be freaked out.

I would describe myself pretty much how everyone else on this page has described themselves, so the best thing would probably be to just meet and chat. I should, however, probably warn you that I talk about the Simpsons pretty much incessantly, so if you are an enemy of Ralph Wiggum, we might have problems. I'll be moving to Ann Arbor in less than a month, so the unit will be available for viewing then. Until then, e-mail will probably be the best way to reach me (jid@ucla.edu).

Ok, I've rambled long enough. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll see everyone else in August.

    -Jason

  • Hey future M1's,

One of my prospective roommates fell through (he made a bad decision to attend an inferior institution) and now I am looking for a roommate. I am a current M1 looking to find a roommate for next year, starting late May/Early June (though I can deal with August, so please don't hesitate to contact me). The only requirements I have is that you keep the place clean -- though I would prefer a male and a nonsmoker.
    Benefits:

    1) A great 1 bedroom in a three bedroom house. Hardwood floors, a new, refinished kitchen, including dishwasher and a full finished basement and a nice back yard in a great residential neighborhood. 1 1/2 baths. If you have a car, you'll have a spot in a carport and keep it protected from the weather.

    2) Price: Asking for 415$ a month. Very low security deposit (if you got into medschool that's good enough for me), and you will get water included (all other utilities split up three ways). Laundry is in the basement and would also be free. I think that for Ann Arbor and the amenities you will be getting this is for EXTREMELY cheap, though I will listen to counteroffers. Look around, even on this board -- no one is offering more amenities for less.

    3) Location: Only a 7 minute shuttle ride, or a 15 minute bike (10 minutes downhill to the school, 15 uphill coming back) or 20-25 minute walk (I wouldn't do it on a regular basis, but it's defintely doable). The shuttle runs for free with Umich ID about every 30 minutes between 6:30am-8:30am and again 3:30-5:30, and besides that there is a city bus that runs very regularly between 7:00am and 10:30pm on the weekdays and between 8:30 and 6:30 on weekends and costs only a 1$ (less if you buys a monthly pass). Both stops are literally steps away from the house on one end and the med school on the other end of the line. In my opinion whether you walk for 10 minutes to get to class (and even with the closest apartments in the medschool ghetto it will take you at least 10 minutes) or ride the bus for 8 minutes it figures to the same time. In the summer it's a nice bike ride and in winter you won't be freezing your ass walking. It is also a short drive (3 minutes) to nice restaurants, the gym and the groceries).

    4) I am a clean, laid-back roommate, who knows you will be in school a lot, will not play loud music and will respect your privacy. (Maybe even sell you some books :). It's a great place to live.

If you think you're interested, e-mail me at: ggurda@umich.edu and I can give you more details or we can talk on the phone.

I'm 22, graduated from Indiana University and am splitting my summer between Indianapolis and Louisville, KY. Me: very tidy, nonsmoker, not much of a cook (I specialize in Pastaroni and Chicken Helper), studious but enjoy a good time, love college b-ball but not so much football (hey, I went to IU). I plan to scope out apts sometime the 2nd wk of June so if you think you might be interested in sharing an apt (male or female) or just want an apt-searching buddy that week, shoot me an e-mail.

  • Hey Incoming M1's-
I just wanted to clarify a message from earlier. I live at Phi Rho Sigma, one of the 3 med school "fraternity" houses. It ISN'T a fraternity (ie men only). It is more like a society. I'm one of the 7 or 8 girls who live here now. Living here is one of the best decisions I made when I came to medical school. Close to school/work, lots of advice and book borrowing from upperclassmen, great "family" atmosphere. Not having to grocery shop or make meals is a huge plus, especially when you're a third year and have no time after a full day in the OR or on the wards. The high speed cable access for the internet and the work out equipment (Precor eliptical machine and weights) are added bonuses! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me.

  • Hi M1s-
Now that more of you are thinking more seriously about living situations for next year, I'd like to re-iterate my offer for those of you thinking of signing leases at Med Center Court. If you are interested in getting some free money out of the deal (up to $200), send me an email. Med Center Court will give me money for referring people to move in, and the bottom line is that I will give you half of whatever I get, once you sign a lease and move in. If you already know you want to live at Med Center Court, there's really no reason not to go for this one. If you have any questions about the apartments or anything else in general, feel free to send me an email. Best of luck to all in relocating to Ann Arbor.

  • Hi M1s,

Congrats on coming to Michigan. I’m writing to follow-up on Dan’s Phi Rho housing advertisement. Personally, I think it’s a great place to live. I reckon the two biggest benefits are it’s convenience and it’s sense of community.

Convenience ?Phi Rho is just five minutes away from the med school. Can’t beat this when you want to sleep as long as possible or avoid the cold. Also, there are 11 cooked meals a week and plenty of leftovers ?this is a huge timesaver when you are busy with work.

Community ?Phi rhoers get to know each other very well. Housemates from your own class will inevitably become friends (& study mates). Phi Rho is unique in that all four classes intermingle. The upperclassmen serve as great role models and sources of advice for the new students. Phi Rho’s companionship extends to the community at large as we are involved in a number of community service projects (For instance, right now I have over 700 stuffed animals in my room which we will be giving to Motts Childrens Hospital and other community service agencies).

We have a lot of fun at phi rho, but we take our education seriously. If you check out our website (www.umich.edu/~phirho), you’ll see that our graduating class was very successful in the match.

The fact that most phi rho residents stay in the house for all four years speaks for itself. In fact a number of students will ask to move in after M1 year (a request that can’t always be accommodated because we keep as many spots as possible for incoming M1s).

Feel free to call me at any time if you have questions (734)-972-6999. Space is filling up and grad students are knocking on the door to take any unclaimed spots.

    Have a great summer.
    - Seth (Phi Rho President)

  • Hey folks,
I'm a future M1 interested in living in a two bedroom apt. at Med Center Court. I was in Ann Arbor last week and picked up a lease, which I'd like to sign as soon as possible. I am a 21 year old Notre Dame grad from Long Island, NY. I'm all about working hard and playing hard. I'm a big college football and basketball fan (I'll def. have season tickets to Michigan football). I'm a pretty laid back, sarcastic guy...I get a kick out of TV shows like "The Simpsons" and Fox's short lived "The Family Guy." I'm a pretty active person, playing volleyball whenever I can. I'd say I'm pretty clean and I'd rate my cooking skill as average...to quite average. As for furniture, Ill be bringing a comfortable futon, a kitchen table and chairs, an entertainment center w/25''TV and VCR, stereo, and some other random things. If I sound like someone whom you think you'd get along with then drop me an email.
    Have a great (fast) summer,
    Gerry

I live about 2 hours north of Ann Arbor, so it won't be hard for me to drive down to check out apartments, either with someone or on my own. I would really like to get things settled soon, because I have a summer job that will take me out of the state starting in mid-June. As for info about me, I'm 22, easygoing, cheerful and energetic. I have good study habits, but I'm always up for having a good time. I don't mind sharing cooking and cleaning responsibilities, and I love to wash dishes. So, if you're interested in rooming with me, or want more info, just email me. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone in August.

  • Hey incoming M1s! Looking for an EASY, completely HASSLE-FREE way to start med school in a new place? My roommate's taking off for a year of research, leaving behind a completely furnished bedroom and all her M1 books. You'll have a nicely decorated room including a bed, desk, bookcase, and dresser. The apartment is a two-bedroom in Medical Center Court, which is about a 10-minute walk to the med school, part of the famed ghetto where most of your classmates will live. The building the apartment is in has a study lounge in it, washer/dryer, and space for extra storage. Just across the street is the complex's fitness center. I like to live in a clean apartment, am generally an easygoing person, and an M3-to-be, which means I'm not going to be around a whole lot next year. Logistics: available in July, rent will be roughly $500 (our rent is changing in August but I haven't bothered to ask the apartment manager for the exact figure yet). If I'm not totally swamped by boards studying, I'll try to post a website with pictures of the place. If interested or have any questions, feel free to email or call me (734-546-1668). If you want to ask my current roommate how fabulous a roommate I am, feel free to email her too (rhopper@umich.edu)!

I am a future M1 looking for 3 roommates (male, female, or mixed) to share a four bedroom condo at Nielsen Square located just off Maiden Lane (5 minutes walk to the Medical Center), right next to the Island Drive Apartments. It is really nice, spacious, and new (with washer-dryer, dishwasher, parking, etc...), all for a really good deal! Ideal situation for people who don't know anyone and would like to live with more than one other person.

  • UNBELIEVABLY GREAT APARTMENT!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen, are you looking for the perfect apartment for medical school? Ann Arbor natives will be familiar with the location conveniently located above the well loved Angelo's on the Side restaurant, which is a 30 second walk from the medical school. Also, it is a 3 minute walk from central campus. I am looking for one person to take over next year's lease, with flexible move-in date, but the earlier the better. The apartment is two story with one 15' by 11' room available. A male to be second year law student lives on the top level, which has 3 smaller rooms. He is flexible to move downstairs if preferred. Next to the single on the first floor is a 10' x 11' living area, one full bath, and a large kitchen with porch.

Parking space included in the Angelo's lot. All utilities included.
Low monthly rent of $425 per person.
The landlord owns Angelo's and has not raised rent in years! Free loaf of bread when you pay rent! Seriously though, other two-person apartments in this area run between $650 and $700 per person (Check out Bradford House next door - where I lived before this). This is a steal. Dogs allowed. Roommate is allergic to cats. I am moving in with my fiance, otherwise I would stay here!
Check it out, this is the best deal.
    Kirsten
Call 945-7827 or email kirstone@umich.edu if interested.

  • Hey m1's =)
I'm a to be m3 looking for a roommate, preferably female, non-smoker. I live in one of the Riverhouse condiminium apts which is
about a 10 - 12 min walk away fr the med school. I'm hoping to find an m1 roomie because I figured they would probably benefit
the most from my M1 and m2 belongings (books, notes, stuff). I like keeping public spaces clean and looking for someone
who feels the same, and enjoy cooking, although next year i probably won't be cooking that much, in fact, I might not be around that much.

Apt plusses - the bigger bedroom (i'm too lazy to move), washer/dryer unit in the apt (don't have to go outside to do laundry)
-most m1 and m2 books you'll need at your disposal, all shared furniture already present, and a great deal - $440/mo + elec/cable
-what essentially will be a spacious 2 br apt all to yourself (as i said, i'm predicting i won't be around that much next year)
Apt minuses - nearby parking (<5 min walk) available, but only 1 spot available next to the apt; allergic to cats

b/c of the apt minus, this place is great if you don't have a car, and don't plan to get one the first 2 years...it's very doable. if you
do have a car, don't give up on this place, my roommate has been parking in the same spot for 2 years and never found it a problem, it's just not
    right outside.
If you're interested or have any questions, please e-mail me
    Thanks !

  • Hey I am an incoming M1 from Los Angeles, California and I a little confused about how I should go about finding housing/roommate. I have heard about the few medical frats and also the "White coat ghetto" of those two apartment complexes right by campus. But being from California I am not sure of how to choose a place and a roommate or if it is just easier/more convenient to live in one of the coed frats. Any other future M1's moving from California moving out there and what are you doing?? I am actually planning on flying out to Michigan this thursday, May 8th, to check the school out and the surrounding housing situation out. Let me know what I should be looking for or considering when I am out there. Thanks and hope to see you all next year!!

The Corner Clinic is a low-income clinic for 12-21 year olds and their children in Ypsilanti, the next town over. They have a program called Reach Out and Read (ROAR) which we used to send volunteers to and want to start doing again. If you are going to be here this summer and think you might be willing to take at least one shift reading to kids in the waiting room for a couple of hours on a Tuesday and/or Friday afternoon, e-mail me at kstanlez@umich.edu. No commitment yet, just trying to get an idea.

  • Congrats to the incoming class! I think you will really love it here! Except for the weather perhaps...to variable. Like the 30 degree weather we have in latter April. And the streets...darn those parking rules. But everything else--the med school, faculty, classes, your upperclassmen (thats us) you'll really dig. My name is Rajiv John and Im currently your superior...errr...I mean your authority....errr...I mean a member of the current M1 class -- an M2-to-be. Im going to be in Ann Arbor this summer and am looking for a roommate for the summer. I live at Riverhouse condos which is across the park and within view of the medical school, in the highly acclaimed 'med shool ghetto'. I swim/bike/run/play tennis/ultimate frisbee/suck at soccer and curling. I live in a two bedroom apartment with my plant, Herbie. Wooden floors, dimmer lights in a spacious living room, nice accommodating kitchen, great neigbors, swimming pool right outside my place. If you're interested, and you're a non smoker, and you're a male (sorry ladies...I mean I know its tempting, but mom would kill me), email me or give me a call. 734-327-9650.

Also for anybody...if you're going to be in ann arbor in the summer, email me and Ill put you on a summer med school email list. So far I have about 40 people from my class on this list sticking around. It'll be fun!

I know this is nothing to really base a decision on, but if you are interested in finding a roommate please email me and we can discuss it further.

  • Hey incoming M1's, I posted this a few weeks ago. We now have 6 of your classmates signed up for next year. Hurry up and contact us before you miss out on the ultimate in convenient med school living arrangements...

The Phi Rho Sigma Medical Society is located less than two blocks from the med school and offers an unbeatable combination of features. We are 32 women and men (from all over the U.S. and the world) who live in a historic Tudor home and enjoy the following: Meals prepared by a professional cook, free cable ethernet to all bedrooms, extensive free weights and brand new Precor elliptical machine, new house PC, pool table, foosball table, maid service, free washer and dryers, recently renovated bathrooms, study lounge, bike room, house entertainment center with digital cable, DVD player and TiVo, and extensive collection of medical texts and old tests/quizzes. I'm sure I'm forgetting things, but you get the idea. Of greatest value are the 3 minute walk to school and the meals - when you're in the middle of an exam week, you'll be very glad you've got both of those.

The best part about living at Phi Rho are the friendships between med students from all 4 classes. Living here, you will gain invaluable advice and perspective from the M2s, M3s and M4s. We work hard, then play hard. In short, everyone who moves into the Phi Rho house is very glad they did, and we don't move out til we graduate.

Please visit our webiste at http://www.umich.edu/~phirho/ and be sure to check out the link for prospective members. Feel free to contact Nishit (the Summer House Manager) at nishitm@umich.edu, or you can e-mail me. We would be happy to answer questions about Phi Rho or any other question you might have.

You'll want to get signed up early before the rooms run out!

Medical Center Court is one of the apartment complexes in the med school ghetto. Excellent location, apartments are great, short walk to school, and great maintenance. Not to mention a lot of your classmates will be very close by. I highly endorse the place and will most likely be staying there next year as well. If any of you are thinking of signing a lease here, please let me know. Again, you really can't go wrong with this place, and I've been quite happy here. If you sign the lease and tell them that I referred you, they will give me $400 off my next month's rent. To make things fair for you, I will give you $200 of that. Please email me if you're interested or have any further questions about Med Center Court. Congrats on getting into U of M!

If any of you are going to live in Island Drive Apartment (10 min walk to school, and I think over 15% of our students live there. tel 734-665-4331), don't forget to say that you got a referral from someone currently living there. You and the other person will both get $100.00 off on one month's rent.<BR><BR>
If you don't know anyone living there, just say you got a referral from Woojin Yu (my roommate who holds the lease) at 1105 apt 106. Note my roommate and I wouldn't move in until 8/15, so just make sure they know that we are not there yet, but will be there. Hope it all works out. And yeah, whatever money we get from the referral, we'll give it back to you (just make sure to treat us to dinner :P). If you have any questions, drop me a line.

I'm going to be an M-1 in August. I'm a 21 year old asian girl who's pretty neat, happy-go-lucky, and outgoing. I have good study habits but definately know how to have fun. And, well, I guess I'm not a real girly-girl. I mean I like cute and fuzzy stuff animals, nice smelling things, checking out hot guys, etc. but like I don't carry around a purse and I like playing football, videogames and things like that.

YUP! Anyways, I'm looking for a female roommate with similar interest, non smoker, and who won't mind that every meal I cook will have white rice. :) I don't have an apartment yet, but I live ~3hours away (Chicago) so I'm more than happy to drive up and check out some places for us.

    Anyone interested?

  • Hello!

I thought I would join in the fray and post a message as well. I have a place in Riverfront Park Place condos (just across the
river from the med school) and I am looking for 1 or 2 roommates for next year. I will be an incoming M1. The place is wonderful!
It is a 3br/2bath with almost brand-new kitchen and bathrooms. It has a good view from almost every window and even a balcony.
Parking is available (I'm not quite sure of all the details) and there is laundry down the hall.

I don't have too many preferences about roommates, although I am a nonsmoker, a hard worker who still likes to have fun, and am
pretty neat most of the time, and would enjoy roommates who are somewhat similar. I would prefer no pets (at least of the
larger four legged variety). Most likely the rent will be around 500-600 a month depending on the number of occupants, but
I am flexible and willing to discuss if you are interested.

Anyone interested, please don't hesitate to contact me! I am a deferred student who has enjoyed living in California the past
year but is excited to get to Ann Arbor and start school and have some fun.

    Thanks,
    Joel

  • Due to some questions I've been asked by those interested in the apartment about me, here's some additional information.
Although cats are allowed in the Riverhouse complexes, as much as I love them, I'm pretty allergic to them, so i don't think
I could live with one in the apartment. I don't smoke, and am fairly neat in that although my own room is not always spic and span,
I like to keep public areas neat as possible. I am usually inspired by my roommates to clean, but don't really enjoy cleaning up after
others, so I am looking for someone with a more clean bent rather than not. Just let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks =)
    "Congrats to the incoming M1s.
I'm a current M2, looking for a female roommate, preferably an M1, during my M3 and M4 years since my current roomie has to move out.
2br/1ba apt in the Riverhouse condiminiums, a slightly nicer alternative to the island dr
and med center court apts in the med school ghetto. ~10 min walk to lecture (and I have
short legs). Rent is fair, probably be ~440/mo, including heat. Washer/dryer included IN the apt!
And most likely you will be getting the larger room as I will be too lazy to move.
The only drawback is that the apt only has 1 parking spot, which I will be taking. As
an M1 and M2 having a car isn't crucial, and I'd be more than willing to help out with rides
if needed (granted I'll probably be pretty busy). There is parking available if you're willing to
walk for it, it's what my current roommate does and she insists it's not so bad.
If you are interested, please give me an e-mail.
Oh yeah, you'll also have free access to whatever books I have from M1 and M2 years.

Hey any of you current med students use the 'grad student parking permit'? How good is the availability of parking in the orange lots on mitchell - in the morning during the time we need to get to lecture? (ok - that was probably a run-on sentence)

aren't you guys SO EXCITED to start??! What I look forward to eat when i get back to ann arbor- Pizza House Steak fries with ranch dressing! Even a steak burrito el GORDO from Pancheros would hit the spot!
ok now i have to go make something to eat. cya!

  • Hey future M1's,

I am a current M1 looking to find a roommate for either just the summer (from late May/Early June through August) or better yet for a whole year, starting late May/Early June. The only requirements I have is that you keep the place clean -- though I would prefer a male and a nonsmoker.
    Benefits:

    1) A great 1 bedroom in a three bedroom house. Hardwood floors, a new, refinished kitchen, a full finished basement and a nice back yard in a great residential neighborhood. 1 1/2 baths. If you have a car, you'll have a spot in a carport and keep it protected from the weather.

    2) Price: Asking for 415$ a month. I won't hassle you for a security deposit (if you got into medschool that's good enough for me), and you will get water included (all other utilities split up three ways). Laundry is in the basement and would also be free. I think that for Ann Arbor and the amenities you will be getting this is cheap, though I will listen to counteroffers.

  • Just some info for people like Steph looking for apartments:

The Diag is the central area of central campus, where undergrads have a lot of their classes. The medical school is on the northeastern tip of central campus, so it is kind of in between the main central and north campus areas. Downtown Ann Arbor is located west of the medical school. South of Central campus is where a lot of undergrads live, and the rent is often expensive (and the landlords sometimes shady) over in this area. Good places to check out would be the list that the medical school has online (mostly aparment complexes), the area north of Central Campus (Anne, Catherine, Lawrence - there are lots of undergrads here, but it is more of a quiet neighborhood), and maybe even the Kerrytown area (northwest of central campus). Check out the maps that David posted - they'll help your orient yourself :)

I started searching for an apartment near the med school and
being out-of-state, when I read ad lines that say "minutes away from the diag" "near the downtown area"
"close to north/central campus" etc. mean absolutely nothing to me!
So I was hoping someone could kind of put it all in perspective. For instance, what's a diag!? Where's the downtown area
with respect to the north/central campus? Is the north campus the medical school?
Stupid stuff like that. I'm pretty much lost. Thanks!

They are Island Drive and Medical Center Court, and both are relatively reasonable and pretty decent apartment complexes. A lot of other apartment complexes are near the AATA bus stops that run all over Ann Arbor. There are also a lot of smaller apartments buildings around Ann Arbor, near the medical school. You can check out the Michigan Daily classifieds (www.michigandaily.com)-some of the ads will tell you places close to the medical center. I hope this helps :)

  • The Admissions Office will be mailing a packet of information to everyone the third week of April. We were told by the athletic dept. that the football ticket info for med students would not be available yet for this mailing. But not to worry, as soon as we get that info, we'll send it out to everyone! Katie

  • Well, to address your concerns...as long as you live on campus you really don't need to drive anywhere. The biggest problem you might have is getting to the grocery store and back. You'll probably need a car M3 and M4 year though when you start working in the hospitals. Out of state students never get in state residency, unless you can prove that your spouse is living in Michigan for non-academic reasons. The med school is supposed to send out stuff about housing in April. But hey I'm looking for a roommate! Any takers?

  • for info on parking, you can go to..
    http://www.parking.umich.edu/
then click on 2002-2003 student parking for the various parking options and permits available.
Probably the best one to get if you wish to drive everyday is the Graduate student parking permit. But you'll have to drive to and park in the orange lot, and then you'll have to take one of the many buses that will go to the med center which is a short hop, skip away.
what's cool about the grad student parking is that after 3pm to 5am, you can park in any blue lot which offers great premier parking all across the campus if you need to come back to school to study or eat at some various places across campus. AND it's only $81 for the whole year!

So when are you guys all moving into town??
omigoodness, i'm watching maternity ward right now on tlc (don't ask me why)... It's really touching and all, but i can tell you right now-- i am scared to death of some of the screaming women in labor. NURSE!

  • Hi everyone! Yes, if you went to Michigan as an undergrad (and have been getting football tickets every year), your credit hours will count towards better seats IF you sent in your stuff last Friday. If you didn't get it in on time. . . . I'm not sure what they do. But regardless of where you sit, there's nothing like gameday at the Big House:-)

  • Hello! I am going to be an M1 next year and I am looking for a roomate. I am currently finishing up my senior year at Michigan, so I can scope out different places to live, and I know the surrounding campus area very well. I'm pretty easy to live with, 21 years old, and I may be interested in having a cat. Feel free to e-mail me if you are interested, or give me a call at 734-764-0754. I will be in Ann Arbor until the end of April and I would like to look for a place before I leave for the summer.

  • so what's up with the michigan football season tickets? i just checked it out on the ticket office website and it looks like the deadline was for last friday! I imagine that we'll still have the opportunity to get tickets right?
also- i know in undergrad, you got better seats as you had more credit hours accumulated. Do grad/med students automatically get better seats than the undergrad kids?? I'd imagine so, but maybe some of you current M1s can answer that question definitively.

    http://www.mgoblue.com/section_display.cfm?section_id=205&top=1&level=3

Oh! and if some of you out there are looking to invest into property and buy a place instead of renting for 4 years, check out http://www.ndchomes.com/communities/comm_page.asp?CID=258 . It's a brand new condo community that's building right now and will be finishing construction in june. I just bought a place there, it's only 3 miles from school, and 2 br/2ba start out at 155k. I have more info about it if you guys are interested- pricelist questions, bus stop, parking at u of m, etc. It'd be cool if we get some classmates out there- that's all!

Or if you don't want to buy a place, i have my 2nd bedroom open for rent of course-it'd be cheap $400 plus utils. The place will be stacked- but i'd say you'd want to have a car.

sorry- 1 more question! You know the 'pre-matriculation program' that runs for like 6 weeks before school, is that something that we'll be asked to attend, and if so-- when do we find out about that? I imagine, we'd know by now if they wanted us to come early right?

I'm looking for a non-smoking roommate (preferably a good cook) to live in a 1200 square foot, 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom (you'll have your own bathroom) condo with A/C, free parking, an outdoor pool, balcony, black leather couches, fishtanks, modern kitchen, laundry facilities on the floor, next to a park on the Huron River, that is a 5 minute walk to the hospital. Rent is $650/month (less than an Island Drive single and my place is much nicer). shoot an email to dkrochma@umich.edu if you want to know more about it or want to see pics of the place. Cheers, Danny (aka "Kroch" but don't let that scare you)

If you can place the highest bid, it's yours. I'm not looking to make money on my apartment -- just to keep from losing all that rent while I'm out of town.

This is your chance to live in Ann Arbor for considerably less than what it will cost once you're here. You can check this place out while also saving a few hundred. Email at apossner@umich.edu or call 734-223-2150 for more info. Thanks!

  • (INTERESTED IN A SUBLET? READ ON....) Geetings, incoming M1s! Congratulations on being accepted. You will love it here.... My name is Adam Possner, and I am a current M1. If you are interested in coming to Ann Arbor early this summer to hang out in the town or do research, I have an opportunity for you.

I am currently living at Island Drive Apartments, one of the complexes in the "White Coat Ghetto" and only a 10-min walk from the med center. If you would like to see what living in this area is like, this is your chance. I am subletting the apartment for anytime from May 23 until August 15. For less than $500/month, you will get your own, CLEAN room plus a FULLY furnished apartment, including full kitchen w/ gas, washer/dryer in basement, air-conditioning, cable computer hook-up, parking, and a pool behind the building. Plus, you would be living with my current roommate, a very knowledgeable rising 2nd-year student. And you would be next to beautiful Island Park!

In short, not only would you get a chance to check out Island Drive before potentially renting an apartment here, but you will get a chance to hang out and learn the ropes from a student who has been around for a year....

If you're male or female, non-smoker, and don't have any pets, contact me at apossner@umich.edu or 734-223-2150. Price will definitely be less than $500/month and is FULLY negotiable.

  • Hey incoming M1's, I'm posting this early so you don't miss out on a GREAT housing option for next year and beyond.

The Phi Rho Sigma Medical Society is located less than two blocks from the med school and offers an unbeatable combination of features. We are 32 women and men (from all over the U.S. and the world) who live in a historic Tudor home and enjoy the following: Meals prepared by a professional cook, free cable ethernet to all bedrooms, extensive free weights and brand new Precor elliptical machine, new house PC, pool table, foosball table, maid service, free washer and dryers, recently renovated bathrooms, study lounge, bike room, house entertainment center with digital cable, DVD player and TiVo, and extensive collection of medical texts and old test/quizzes.

Feel free to contact me at 734-223-4866 or by e-mail, or Jaime Grimley - her number is 734-717-1995 and e-mail is grimleyj@umich.edu. We would be happy to answer questions about Phi Rho or any other question you might have.

You'll want to get signed up early before the rooms run out!

Congrats on choosing U-M. You're gonna like it here.

    -Dan Johnson, M2

  • for anyone seeking an apartment next to the medschool for next year, I'm an M2 subletting my third floor (top) apartment for the next school year beginning june 2003 extending through june 2004. the lease would then be free for you to resign as your own. It's in Island Drive, the apartments we show you on your interview day tour. the rent is locked at last year's price ($785 per month), which is nice since all rent rates are going up. the rent includes heat, water, gas and waste removal. About one third of each year's class lives here. If anyone is interested, or has any questions about housing or anything else, let me know. thanks.

  • Hi, I will be an M1 and would like to live in the apartment complex across from the medical school which I heard about during the interview. Are they made for two occupants? What is the rent per month? If a roommate is necessary, I would like to live with someone similar to me. Thus I will tell you a bit about myself and what I am looking for (some of these are obvious):

-Just turned 21, am male, and very social. I currently go to MSU in East Lansing, MI.
-Like to have fun whenever possible, but I always get my work done- therefore no one too wild.
-I am a Liberal and tolerant.
-Have a great sense of humor and I enjoy shows such as the Simpsons, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and old episodes of Seinfeld.
-Enjoy Rock, Indie Rock, and Trance music.
-I don't know how sleeping habits will work in medical school. Currently I stay up pretty late though this will probably change. I just need someone who will respect my need for quiet sleep, and I will do the same in turn (no loud rap music/bass at night).
-No pets (I suppose fish can be an exception).
-The person must behave in a socially acceptable manner.
-I really don’t mind dorks(LOL), but I'd rather not live with one.
-The person must have good personal hygiene (no bad odors!).
    -No smoking in the room.
-No regular drug users (this includes weed).
-Drinkers are fine (I go to MSU).

If you are interested, send me an email and we can further talk/meet to see if we are compatible. I am willing to compromise on most things and don't have any real pet peeves. You will find I am pretty normal. I only posted such obvious things because you just never know?

  • How are all of you doing? I hope you are all as excited about starting as an M1 at Michigan as I am. I'm all about getting the season ticket block of football tickets. I've wanted to go to a Michigan game my entire life, and hopefully, I'll be able to do that now. I've been traveling in Australia and New Zealand since the new year, so returning to academics is something I both look forward to and loath. As for now, I'll just have to be satisfied with sky diving, kyaking, climbing glaciers, and hang gliding. I know. It is such a difficult life.

Anyways, as for the housing deal, open to live with pretty much anyone regarding gender and race, although I would prefer someone under 24. I like to socialize and have a good time, but not really wild. I'm really flexible as a person, so if you have any special pet peves that's cool. I like to keep things relatively clean too. I'm not a big fan of cleaning, but I just try to not get things dirty in the first place. Here's a list of other random tid bits you may or may not care about:
    1) Legal Name: Sundeep Singh 2) Age: 21 3) Undergrad: Georgia Institute of Technology 4) Degree: Industrial and Sytems Engineering 5) Hobbies: Ultimate and Music
I really want to get an apartment at one of the complexes really close to the medical center. If anyone is interested, just send me an email. I might be slow to respond, since I only visit cybercafes once every few days.

Take care and I hope everyone has a nice week!

    Sunny

  • Hey Street Philospher! Yeah it's a bit dark in various areas, but that's because some of the med school is underground. Like the LRC Computing Center or the Furstenburg. You have some natural light, but most of it's artificial. It's really not that bad though- I promise! The hospital and cancer center is lit very well and also are pretty new buildings. I believe the hospital was built in 1986, and i think the cancer center was built in 1998. So when you're spending years 3&4 in the hospital, you'll have great facilities and plenty of light to pick ya up!

For the waitlisted student: good luck to you. I hope to see you in August! Here's the info on curriculum update; this info can also be found on michigan's website: http://www.med.umich.edu/lrc/cr2003/
here's general info in case you don't want to search through that info:
    Grading:
    M-1year: Pass/Fail
    M-2 year: Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail
    M-3 year: Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail
    M-4 year: Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail
No more than 20 weekly hours of structured time, of which at most 10 hours are lecture-based. ~4 hours each day of lecture/small-group/labs. I believe their current curriculum is closer to the standard 9-5. Also, students hit the wards 2 months earlier than normal.

  • The weather is awesome in ann ARbor. NOthing but 75 degree days and NO SNOW! I know, it's amazing considering the
    geographical location.

Okay, there are times it snows, but the med complex is so huge that everything is interconnected so you
never have to go outside! how dreary does that sound?

Yes there is housing right by the school. Island Drive apartments- is probably the best deal and
still in walking distance. By the way, I'm looking for a roommate. Preferably an asian male- the
only reason is b/c my parents would freak if i lived with a girl, and asian b/c I'd like it if
my roommate not wear shoes around the place. Silly reason huh? but with the snow/slush- carpeting can
get really nasty if you bring that stuff into the living room. right right? Hey but if you'll take off
your shoes right inside the door, then I'll live with anyone. Oh- and I'd prefer someone who doesn't
piss on the seat, and if you spill on the seat or floor, that you'd wipe it up (that's my only pet peeve).

Oh I'm no cook either- so don't expect me to make you any beef chow fun. But I will share my cereal, Honey
bunches and corn pops with you, and I'll even occasionally make a microwaved hot dog. I do love Tropicana
Grovestand Orange juice, so that's probably the only thing that i'm protective over.
