Behold the recent Ph.D. attempting to get a real job.

Hello and welcome to

Operation Get Real Employment (O.G.R.E.)

My spiel:

I care about the environment. If there is something nasty in or approaching the drinking water supply, for instance, I want to deal with it. I do not much care what it is or how it got there; I want it out
.

This theme, which I first embraced about 10 years ago, has led me through a variety of activities from wetlands education to testing water filters to a Ph.D. on nuclear waste.

All of this has been great fun. I have grown particularly fond of writing, the peer-review process, computer programming, and I adore my work as an editor. Still, there is something a little unsatisfying about academic research.

I want a concrete product - a cleaned-up lake, say, or a new container design, or a decision on the best way to comply with an environmental regulation. In short, I want a real job.

If you or someone you know has any advice, ideas, or suggestions, particularly for positions near White Plains, NY (in Westchester county within easy commuting distance of Manhattan and parts of NJ and CT), I would be grateful!

For more info, you can see my resume and a silly poem introducing my thesis defense off on the side. I also recently started blogging about nuclear waste.
